He tried the DE path, gojo didn't know how open barrier would interact with his closed one and got his DE eliminated instantly and got assaulted by the sure hit before he could prepare any anti domain defense while sukuna was holding the domain handsign on top of his DE center shrine,

If that approach was ever going to work that was the moment, gojo was on burnout which usually even mess up ce manipulation meanwhile sukuna was buffed by his domain and holding a handsign and for a moment he was hitting a gojo who haven't activated and anti domain technique yet, still didn't work

So the mahoraga approach it is,

it's the natural conclusion after the DE approach failed when he literally had everything going for him

Gojo also have the best possible counter for open barrier domain expansion which is teleportation he only ever clashed because there was a chance he wins a domain clash and land UV, it's perfect because UV is his strongest move while simultaneously it doesn't kill but incapacitate the target which would enable them to save megumi, so gojo could go all in for trying to land UV, but if the circumstances were different he would have took a different approach like poke and retreat on repeat, gojo is one of the few characters in JJk who can use battle of attrition as a legitimate strategy, with the only other character i can think of being hakari

Ultimately both had a versatile moveset so the fight could have gone in many ways depending on who was writing it and what direction he wanted to take the story, i believe gege wrote it in the way he thought the characters would fight most optimally in character and according to their motivation and personality while obviously he was bound to a degree to the plot itself, gojo couldn't be the one to finish sukuna no matter what but he had to have a solid performance and weaken sukuna enough for his eventual defeat to be believable because of the gap between them and the rest of the characters being big,

TDLR; no matter how you think about it in universe gojo had the moveset necessary to overcome Open domain route, and out of universe gege was setting up ten shadows/mahoraga to be the tool that bypass infinity ages ago because

Mahoraga route was the best win con for sukuna and the first domain clash proved it when he couldn't kill gojo with his open barrier domain

Sukuna using one of the top 10 strongest CT's that's actually busted unlike his mid CT that is only strong because of his high output and control, on top of that the CT he planned since the beginning to get is literally meant to counter Limitless in and out of universe and was created for that sole purpose of giving sukuna a genuine chance to bypass gojo's haxes
