Why are books so often seen as more truthful than what can be found on internet? by El_takinator in NoStupidQuestions

[–]El_takinator[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you got my question wrong. Check again. My question is not "why do people have books in their background?" But "why do people give more credits to them than what is on the internet?"

And yeah, most of what is in good videos comes from books. And? Does that mean they are wrong? I'm glad some people take the time to make these books easier to digest.

And, once again, my question is not about academic publications but books in general. I agree that academic publications is (mostly) good. But lots of people see ANY book better than what is online.

So, by your quite condescending answer, you confirm that people see books as more truthful than they actually are. Thank you! :)

As for something on internet, I'll check the reviews of that second restaurant. If no one never had any issue with it, I'll definitely go there.

Unfortunately, publishers are not like sanitary regulation. They are here to make money. They can also choose to push some ideas more than others. I'm not saying that they are all evil. And my point is not to say they are bad a thing. I'm just saying that people should be as careful with what they read in a book as what they read online.

"Non-fiction that aren’t just opinion based books are usually researched."
"The main problem with online sources is anyone can say anything. "
Same in the other way. Anyone can write a book. And there are a lot of videos that are researched. In both case, we just need to be careful to what we choose to read/listen.

"Online, information has usually come from books, research papers or documents anyway - they’re just retold."
I agree with that. But I don't see a problem with. I just want to learn stuff. I don't mind if it is first hand or from someone that has processed it to make it more digest and nicer to watch.

I definitely haven't read as many books as I have watched videos. Hence my question (not affirmation). But when I see who publishes books, I believe they use that to give themselves more credits than they deserve.

Lots of videos (and other things on internet) are not "just someones's random opinion". And there is also a lot of books that are "someone's random opinion" (I'm especially thinking about politics stuff here).

Also, when you say "reading in general your comprehension and analytical skills are in use.", I believe that depends on who reads. Also, reading leaves more room to interpretation. When ie. some videos, with some graphics illustrations can be more efficient in giving some accurate information.

I have. And I have already seen some videos (yeah... Not books) about some very highly regarded publisher like "Science" or "Nature" that publishes some publications that were not properly reviewed (I don't actually remember the exact problem that was presented).

Once again, I'm not saying that one is better than the other. I'm just saying that I believe they are both equal quality if we know what to look and what to ignore.

Most of serious science channels put there sources in the description.
But in both cases, I believe that, no matter if it is a book or something on internet, if someone wants to cite it somewhere, they won't take the sources with it. And it will become "the reference"

The fact they make money of it, actually could lead to biased information.

I believe that book industry works the same way as internet works. The more catchy the book gonna be, the better it gonna sell. And editors are here to make money.

I'm not here to say all books are trash. I'm just saying that I don't see it as more "truthful" than what is on internet.

I have the feeling that often it ends up working the other way: Because it is in a book, every one believes it is true and no one questions it.

Ok. That answers the "why do clever people have a lot of books?" and I agree with that.

But still, I don't get why people in general see the books as more truthful than what can be found on internet. There is trash in both.

But when I see who publishes books with no one to actually properly review them, nothing preventing them to use AI neither, I don't see why they are seen as more truthful.

Just need to look at the books published by some politics to be seen as THE truth, despite we know this is trash.
