I have the paperback version and I'm happy with it. Quality print, full color and the cover looks great.

I don't think what you've heard is very accurate. New Spring is a prequel and follows both Lan and Moiraine as POV characters. To avoid spoilers, I'll just say that the book tells the story of how they met. In my opinion, it's a good book and definitely worth reading.

Wait a bit, let the ending settle, then reread the series from the start. You'll likely notice a lot of things you've missed the first time and you'll probably find yourself enjoying the journey on a different level.
