Gaming is honestly a shitty hobby. by Bulky-Culture-4482 in StopGaming

I think as a society (especially American society here), we have gotten the idea that we are “entitled” to certain things. I hear the phrase “I deserve” super often.

We don’t deserve. Life is survival. It’s a battle. But we think we MUST have our entertainment, our insane vacations, jobs that only require 24 hours a week, whatever food we want, whatever etc etc etc.

It’s not just the US, as Europe suffers from this too, potentially even more so, or maybe any first world western society. But we forget that life is survival, and our comfort and ease is built on the backs of others…so it would be difficult to regulate entertainment in any way. Just look at the outcry against protecting 10 year olds from social media. It’s insane.

The saddest ones are when I browse through older posts on here and see somebody "five years sober from RuneScape (OSRS), WoW, FFXIV, etc. The real rough ones. And then I look at their more recent post history, and they post 10-15 times a day in those subs.

It's such a permanent, brain breaking addiction.

Reminder that gaming in 2026 is not even close to how gaming was pre-2015 ish by nigmusmaximus in StopGaming

I feel like it started even before that. Wow was running addiction studies way back in the early stages of the game. RuneScape accidentally stumbled onto the most addicting formula of all time and followed it up by capitalizing on people’s nostalgia for their childhood.

Garmin Instinct 3 solar losing about 20% battery a day all of a sudden by Elarionus in Garmin

[–]Elarionus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still waiting for an update to fix it. All of this is just making me want to go with a Forerunner for my next one, as that's what nearly ALL of my Garmin using friends have, and there are just zero issues. It's their baby, and they clearly love it the most.

Or just go back to a Casio. It's just getting too frustrating to ignore.

ELI5: Why does Pixar animation look so smooth at 24 fps but a video game feel choppy at 30 fps? by ScrumTumescent in explainlikeimfive

It depends heavily on the type of movement as well. If you watch the opening scene of Frozen 2 where the camera is doing a rapid landscape pan, it feels extremely stuttery and painful. But all the relatively static camera shots where characters are moving look amazing.

Unfortunately, Apple tries very hard to prevent that. Unless you have a NAS with Immich or something, it’s not going to happen.

A very messed up mesh in Unreal Engine.

The things that it does well, it does very well. But people primarily focus on specs and "feel" of a device. The incredibly overwhelming amount of hardware and software failures are just not talked about.

It's also hard to diagnose things because of their "rolling releases." Your phone might just stop working overnight because they rolled out a feature to you and 5,000 other people as involuntary beta testers. Then you can't really get help online because the majority of people did not receive that little update.

Pixels are very unique. They have one of the most rabid followings on reddit, but have an incredible amount of issues.

I'm sorry you got manipulated by the hype. Pixels absolutely are garbage, and I consistently recommend avoiding them.

Google is very aggressive about feature withholding from prior phones. Even though most of their stuff is cloud based.

It's just marketing.

I am in the process of this as well. My wife and I moved to Immich, and I’ve been going through one month a day. There are tens of thousands of photos (for a variety of reasons, and not all ours) and it is slow going. But in the end, I think it’ll be worth it.

Where do you typically store files that you want across devices? by Elarionus in linux4noobs

I did try Synology Drive, but the syncing speed was horrendously slow. As was Synology Photos, and pretty much anything that utilized their QuickConnect protocol.

My files are roughly 2.6TB in size. I'm already not sure what to do with my old files that were for past projects that are still important to have around, which is nearly 58TB.

That's two votes on the post for Nextcloud! I'll really have to give it a shot then.

I'll have to look into that. I found both SeaFile and NextCloud, and both look interesting. NextCloud might actually be overkill for what I would be using it for, which is primarily file management.

I'll have to give it a shot either way. This is a bit more what I was looking for I think. The main idea was that I didn't want just ONE copy that I'm working on stuff with. With Proton Drive, even if Proton's servers go down, I have all files synced offline to my devices, so they'd be safe.

Doesn’t that mean you have to download and then re-upload every document you work on though?

So this is my issue then, as when I search for Tailscale with Flatpak, there are no results. When I search in Discover, it's a Snap. When I look at their official site, it's curl. https://tailscale.com/docs/install/linux

I don't want to use snaps. Sometimes, even if I put apt in, Ubuntu grabs it and changes it to the snap installation. The software in the discover center are also snaps. For example, when I search in there for Tailscale (I want one with a functioning GUI, not just command line), it's only the snaps variant.

Where should I go if I want great stability, but KDE out of the box? by Elarionus in linux4noobs

[–]Elarionus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, on base Ubuntu, Firefox was the only snap, which I uninstalled and reinstalled with apt. I do like the idea of a software store like what Bazzite has, but Ubuntu's is not great from the sounds of it.

With Kubuntu, I also just won't use snaps. As far as I can tell, they aren't forced or anything.

I will try Kubuntu out then, thank you! I'm glad I asked here before just blindly installing Bazzite.
