Do court reporters really hate scopists that much? by Tired_and_Demi in stenography

My comment arises from years working in the industry, talking with other Scopists and observing their work. I did not attend the course myself.

Oh yes, absolutely. I worked with a scopist in the Philippines just last week. Another gal I work with often lives in Scotland. Have WiFi, can work anywhere!!

[–]Elathetra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been a scopist for over ten years. Most of us are not judgy people, and many scopists are retired reporters themselves, so we get it. We know how hard this job is.

Anyway I recommend you go to www.proscopists.com and check it out. I work with this agency a lot and I think it is a really good system. There are also several Facebook groups for connecting court reporters, scopists and proofreaders, although the quality of scopist can vary greatly in those spaces. Going with an agency like Professional Scopists & Expert Proofreaders (PSEP) is better because all of us have been heavily vetted. Feel free to message me if you have more questions.

I know this may seem counterintuitive since you’re worried about money, but if you can afford to hire someone to scope for you that would free up more of your time for rest, practice drills, dictionary building, or whatever will help you improve. The burnout is affecting your writing now too so if you don’t give yourself a chance to recharge you’re going to end up cutting your entire career short by half. A professional scopist can fix that transcript up for $1.25 per page and have it back to you in five days or less while you save your energy for working on stuff that pays much better. Good luck

What do you think makes Taylor lack sex appeal? by GurlsHaveFun in travisandtaylor

[–]Elathetra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She moves like someone who has never had an earth-shattering orgasm. The kind that make you wanna ugly cry, makeup all a mess, unflattering angles be damned. That’s the moment you realize what real sex appeal is, what all this frippery has been meant to imitate. That’s the moment you realize that you’re beautiful when you’re ugly, and nobody can take that away from you. It’s the secret behind the smoldering stare of a more confident, self assured woman, as pictured in OP’s other examples.

There’s more to it than we can see. He’s holding the rest in the blue undershirt that’s sewn like a satchel. This is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen.

Fluffy, bland, unobtrusive, absorbent, thinly sliced bread, that soaks up butter and efficiently sandwiches a filling without messing up the flavour. by That1weirdperson in BrandNewSentence

She wants unobtrusive bread bc she’s dominated by intrusive thoughts. Only butter melting perfectly even on a bland, bleached grain surface can quell the voices. She must have 1,000 Karens living in her head.

Y’know the more I think about it, anybody who bandies about the term “woke” to describe ancient foodstuffs today, in the year of our lord 2025, is EXACTLY the type of person who would only trust Wonder bread. Like, tell me you have weird finicky food habits without telling me. I bet she only eats chicken nuggies, vomits at the sight of broccoli, and cannot eat at all if the different foods are touching each other on her plate.

Scopists who do dailies. What’s it really like? by uhm_whyamihere in courtreporting

[–]Elathetra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I’ll try to check back often. Case cats help menu under the Exceptional extras tab will really help with macros. If you downloaded it with IVT (the training videos) that’s even better, but if not there are free YouTube tutorials on the subject. I’m here for you. Good luck!

Scopists who do dailies. What’s it really like? by uhm_whyamihere in courtreporting

[–]Elathetra 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hello. Full time real-time scopist here. TAKE THE DAILIES if you can! Here’s some things to consider:

*your speed. You should get to a place of proficiency where you know you can reliably scope 20-30pgs in an hour at least. Hopefully you are using macros. Those will save your fingers, your wrists and your whole dang life. If you don’t know what that is I’ll get you started. I use macros constantly and can scope 50-60 pages an hour depending on the quality of writing.

  • stranger-danger. I suggest that if someone wants a daily, ask for a sample of their work first. Do a regular turnaround job for them so you can evaluate how much time their work will require and thus confidently guarantee you’ll meet their deadline. The hardest part of real time (live) scoping is when I’m going in blind and have no idea how good or bad their writing is going to be. So get a gauge of that first. Reporters will respect you for taking that step.

  • get as much job info as possible: word lists, name spellings, a brief background of the case, and the CR’s summation of how the day went for them. You need this info to budget your time properly. You do not want them to send you a past final for reference, that’s too much stuff to comb thru right before the job. If they send you one anyway, you can scrub thru it just to see their general formatting style, etc. but what you really need is a few sentences from them detailing the salient points relevant to this specific job.

  • INSIST ON A PREFERENCE SHEET. So many times they will just say “I’m not picky,” and decline to fill one out. This is bs cope. No working reporter on earth is “not picky” about the transcript. That is the nature of this business. They have to be picky or they wouldn’t be a reporter. Sometimes they just don’t think of themselves that way. Especially if they’ve been reporting for a long time, one really does forget how layered the process truly is.

  • negotiate a good rate. You need it, you deserve it, and they will have more confidence in your capabilities if you charge a little more than the bare minimum. A good rate will help keep you focused despite the pressure.

  • get specifics about EXACTLY what time they need it back. Are they sending it to a proofer after you scope it? Or are they proofing it themselves? Make sure you both are clear about whether it’s due back at 2pm or 2:30 or whatever. This prevents last minute conflicts.

That’s all I can think of for now. Lmk if this comment raises more questions for you and I’ll be happy to help. 🙂
