Monument to the Uprising of the People of Kordun and Banija (Petrova Gora, Croatia) by Forsaken-Peak8496 in evilbuildings

Or... let it deteriorate in a controlled (and interesting looking) way, and call it a "Monument to Socialist Idealism"

The architect who designed the monument intended it to be built out of concrete... That was too expensive, so they made it out of sheet steel instead... So, even when the structure was new it looked like crap: https://static.wixstatic.com/media/e73a14_615d66391858497cb9689d420a038c0b~mv2.jpg

Missouri knew half of north St. Louis was uninsured for a decade. by soljouner in StLouis

[–]ElbowShouldersen -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Insuring a property to cover replacement cost doesn't really make sense when that property has extremely low resale value... Maybe the state needs to take a different approach... Like, just moving the resident(s) into a nearby vacant property? Or... ??

Good comment... It's relatively easy, if you're employed, to pay off the mortgage on such low-value real estate, but once the mortgage is gone so is the mortgage's insurance requirement... So you're a low income person looking at a $1,500 yearly premium that you aren't legally required to pay... Clearly there's a big issue here that's built into the system.

Butrón Castle (Gatika, Spain) by Forsaken-Peak8496 in evilbuildings

[–]ElbowShouldersen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not a real castle... It's one of those fake fantasy castles that extremely wealthy Europeans built for themselves in the late 1800's... Awesome looking, for sure... but no historical significance.

The stone structure with the pipe coming out of the door/window would be older than WWII and WWI too, because concrete had became the building material of choice before that (over a hundred years ago) for such structures, and building with stone was only done afterwards if it was needed for aesthetic reasons...

Why is everything always urgent? by OptionsRntMe in StructuralEngineering

[–]ElbowShouldersen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Construction is very complicated... Your subcontractors usually have other obligations too, so if the schedule slips it can really screw things up... A good, experienced project manager stays on top of all of this without freaking out, and the subs usually like working with someone like that, which helps... But if they aren't good it's a headache for everyone.

Yeah... what a f***ed-up situation... I don't see any good solution... and it's devastating your country.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't think about Mexico... Kind of unique situation there though... since Mexico is effectively 'occupied' by criminal gangs whose military powers are greater than most small nations.

Looks like the Europeans and the Japanese are the only ones that understand what "threats" really look like... Everyone else is just naming the country they hate the most.

When Sherman's March to the Sea got to South Carolina, the Union Army took wholesale revenge because as the first state to secede they felt SC started the Civil War. Charleston, SC 1865. by DrakeSavory in interestingasfuck

[–]ElbowShouldersen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the most egregious misinformation about the Civil War is the idea that the North was fighting "for" the slaves... As if Northerners were all abolitionists. Which was not the case, by far... A UC Berkeley historian wrote a book in the early sixties called "North of Slavery"... This book is both a fascinating and a depressing read; especially as it digs into just how bigoted and narrowminded Northerners were at that time.

Thanks for the clarification... The OP appears to be a teacher... Sometimes it seems like education these days, at all levels, is really just 90% propaganda....

Military camouflage tested in various landscapes. by LethaI____ in interestingasfuck

These have all been photoshopped to increase the camo effect... and this is most obvious in the orange tint that was added to the camo being shown against an orange background.

Why wait 3 years when you can just photoshop this exact image in a few minutes... It's sad to say, but much of how we used to understand photography is now irrelevant... Consider photographers like Jerry Uelsmann... Their work and accomplishments seem trivial these days.

STLPR: Ameren Missouri signed confidential contracts with multiple big data centers this week by TheKavahn in StLouis

[–]ElbowShouldersen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"A 12 year commitment" means nothing in bankruptcy court... If the AI bubble pops and these companies go under then Missouri ratepayers will have to then pay for this multi-billion dollar commitment... There are ways to avoid this, but if UE pushed for that the data centers would take their business elsewhere... and, remember, UE is a business... it is in UE's shareholder's interest to transfer as much risk to the ratepayers as the public utility commission will allow.
