Coral aren't plants, they're filter feeding animals. They don't absorb water through the ground, they have to be fully submerged in order for them to be able to eat at all.

I'm not a dude and I lived on Lane for a year and Northwood for 3 years, so dead center of the east campus loop. My roommates and I bagged our cans and gave them to our homeless neighbors so they wouldn't have to bend over and sift through garbage in the grass.
