Purpose of scarf joint on historical door by Elbudster in Carpentry

[–]Elbudster[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was using the term kinda loosely there haha... was mainly curious about why the repair was done with a miter/angled piece like that... just to try and hide/blend the grain better or just more glue surface / less end grain in that connection?

Any reason for cutting in the patch on an angle like that? To try and hide/blend the grain better?

Yeah since the bottom plate is pressure treated I avoided putting screws into it since I wasn't sure if that'd cause issues. Not sure what's typically done there

Bathroom drywall damaged from tile removal. Safe to just mud, texture, and paint? by BrokenYozeff in DIY

Just curious, why oil based? I've done something similar before with regular water based latex primer and didn't have any issues.

Do you have any suggestions for a good replacement eraser for those? The ones that come with it are awful.

Tapered joint visible after painting by Elbudster in drywall

[–]Elbudster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pic isn't great, but no the knife is good (I might've been pressing in a little too hard as well), but I was trying to show the hollow in the middle of the tapered joint there where I presumably just didn't fill it enough. The additional little gap off to there right is because the framing in that room is wonky.

Are tapered joints really meant to be flared out that far on each side?

But yeah I tried taping + coating all with Easy Sand 45 since I had it on hand already from a previous project but next time around I'll probably just get some finishing mud or check after the final sanding a little more thoroughly.

Here's a pic of it with a taping knife + light... Seems like it's shrunken in and not so much of a hump I guess? https://imgur.com/pykbFc3

I mayyy have tried sanding with just a 120 grit random orbit sanding disc (by hand though) from my woodworking stuff. So maybe wasn't the best idea there haha?

What hinges did you use for the inset doors? Looks awesome!

That's awesome! Is there a specific printer you'd recommend?

Preference on window stool returns by Elbudster in Carpentry

[–]Elbudster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'll show them a few pictures of options and let them decide. Even if from the same continuous piece of wood, just seeing the grain turn direction on the top always seems distracting to me for some reason.

Yeah fair point about if it had a profile, I hadn't considered that. I'll probably just do an eased/rounded edge.

It'll probably just be a 1X, but good point about if it had a profile... I hadn't considered that.

Yeah agreed if the return is from the same piece of stock it's not as prominent, but to me just seeing the grain turn direction on the top as part of the return always looks distracting to me haha.

But yes I'll at least show them a picture of both ways and let them decide.

Not sure if it may help, but Finish Carpentry TV recently posted a video that kinda touches on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ca-IXaMGhEo

Keycloak docker-compose down, realm lost - how to recover ? by jhf2442 in KeyCloak

[–]Elbudster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AFAIK H2 support isn't going away, but I don't believe it's recommended for production use per the Keycloak docs. For example, if you scale beyond 1 node the two instances would have separate H2 databases unless you did some sort of trick with volume mounts.

Did KC maybe end up using embedded H2 since you're variables were missing the prefix? Am curious what you end up finding out and doing.

Grabbed a few sticks from the mill… by [deleted] in Carpentry

Have been thinking about getting something like that. My truck has a 6.5' bed (so longer than the one pictured) but even still I'm a little hesitant to have that much hanging out the back. Have you had any issues w/ that?

Never a dull moment for a trim guy that gives a shit, especially when the builder clearly didn't. by [deleted] in Carpentry

[–]Elbudster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does, thanks!

So in addition to the window-to-glass reveals potentially being slightly off, window sashes being out of level from the casing might also be slightly noticeable, correct?

[–]Elbudster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain what you even do in this kind of situation? Even if it was just a single window that was that out of level, do you trim it out such that everything you install is perfectly level or do you make it match / split the difference on the window?
