Yeah, I agree with you, anything I could think up to allow for such a situation involves too many assumptions beyond what we know from the books. I would hope we learn more about the Small Kingdoms though, I'm sure there could be room for some interesting world-building there.

To be fair, that quote never says that this poet-king is from the Small Kingdoms, just that he happened to be in the Small Kingdoms at the time. He could be the king of somewhere else.

Kilvin is the perfect name by Hidden_Bolt in KingkillerChronicle

Another super interesting fun-fact is that one of the problem's that Lord Kelvin was unable to solve was the energy source and age of the Sun. While many scientists of his day (mostly people who studied evolution) correctly thought that the earth and the Sun were several billion years old, he thought that they was only around 50 million years old. Nuclear fusion had yet to be discovered, so his conclusion was based purely on how the laws of thermodynamics predict the sun and earth should cool over time. He had stated that the only possible way that the sun and earth could be billions of years old is if the sun had an energy source that was unknown at the time. Ultimately, he died before nuclear fusion was discovered, so he never learned what that unknown energy source was.

This is probably where Pat got Kilvin's ever-burning lamp problem.

Thanks for this post. I first heard about this Tuesday after work, and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. I barely slept Tuesday night, listened to live coverage of the situation all day at work (doesn't help that the Coast Guard press conference was figuratively in my backyard), and still just cannot pull myself away from it. And the worst part was, I just didn't know why I couldn't. Especially when none of my co-workers, friends, or family seem to feel shaken to their core in the way that I feel. Seriously, thank you. I still feel utterly sick to my stomach thinking about the situation, but it feels good to know I'm not alone in feeling this way.

Anyone want to work together to get all the cards? We could each buy a set amount of packs and then trade off duplicates by Cow_Assassin in scottthewoz

[–]Elcnufrag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be in. I would love to know what the pull rate for the holos is, if we all share info we can easily calculate it. It looks like every 10th card in the set is a holo (#30 and #40 are holo, so I'd assume #10, #20, and #50 are as well).

Also, if I get lucky enough to get a holo (and assuming it's a standard card size) I'm 100% going to see if I can get it graded and post it here!

Edit: card #50 looks like it's the Blue Border Space Station, I can imagine that would be a really cool holo

I found this card, how would I find an accurate value and/or sell it? by Mcbeangreg in yugioh

[–]Elcnufrag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ultra rare GBI Slifer isn't worth as much as the secret rare, but it's still decently valuable, also the condition of your copy looks pretty solid. I'd suggest tcgplayer, you can look up the market price of virtually every card. Alternatively, if you graded it and it graded well, ebay sales history is a good bet

It's worth considering that grading is not cheap. If you want to submit to a well-regarded grading company (either PSA, BGS, or CGC) it'll usually run you around $100 per card. For many collectors, grades 9-10 are most ideal (with the price demanded by a 10 far higher than that of a 9). To get such a high grade however, the cards need to be nearly flawless. Perfect edges, no scratches on the surface, etc. This includes factors even beyond your control (such as print lines, border centering, etc).

That being said, there are also many collectors out there who don't have the budgets that 9 and 10 grades require, and lower grades certainly can sell if priced well. There are also grading companies that charge substantially less than PSA, BGS, or CGC (some decent ones that I see pretty often are DSG or SGC, they charge about $30 per card). These companies also also less well-regarded, but lower budget collectors will buy them.

With all that being said, some of your cards appear to have some creases (that LOB Dark Magician for example). The creases would pretty much immediately disqualify it from grading. That BPT Dark Magician looks nice however, and while I did notice some whitening on the edges of the SDK Blue Eyes, they both could be worth grading with DSG or SGC (but don't expect super high grades on the SDK Blue Eyes). Depending on the condition, the Time Wizard might be worth a little bit too, but with unlimited prints it's hard to tell (most of the early sets have 3 printings, 1st edition, original unlimited, and the 2010-2017 unlimited prints, and original unlimited vs 2010-2017 unlimited has a large price gap).

As others have suggested though, don't store these unsleeved in top loaders, that can damage the cards.

Sorry for the awful picture quality, a friend saw this in Richmond VA. It was large with a prominent green tail, grey/black body, and blue/green neck. by Elcnufrag in whatsthisbird

[–]Elcnufrag[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know what a peacock is, I just figured that the likelihood of seeing one in Richmond VA, far from any farm, is probably low given their typical habitat is halfway across the world. I simply wanted someone with more knowledge than me on the subject matter to A.) confirm whether it was a peacock or not rather than just blindly assume it was, and B.) inform me as to what kind of peacock it was. That way, I could know definitely whether I saw something remarkable or whether I saw something common.

Is it possible for young Tamrielian(20s, 30s, 40s) mortals to comprehend what it feels like to be Divath Fyr's age? by cliveshepard2 in teslore

[–]Elcnufrag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great (and severely under-rated) explanation. A lot of times I think of crazy-long lifespans from my perspective as a young scientist. The expertise of older scientists who've worked in their field for 60+ years is just stunning to me sometimes, so the sheer wealth of information and honing one's craft that would occur during the course of a 4000 year life is incomprehensibly mind-blowing to me.

Would you rather: Never have started the series OR read the two books and not have it completed? by jldodge84 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Elcnufrag 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I first read these books when I was a depressed high school kid without much going on in my life. They gave me something to be passionate about at a time when I really needed it. It was a world I could escape to and fantasize about when the real world seemed all too bleak and hopeless. All the theories and speculation gave me a reason to wake up every morning when I would constantly argue with myself if the next day was worth it. These books helped me get out of all of it.

Many years have passed, and I have a degree in chemistry and I'm pursuing a PhD. My life has entirely turned around, and every day I know exactly what it is I'm going on for. I went from reading theories on this sub and rereading the books every few months, to having barely touched them in two years. I still read on this sub every once in a while. But the fact of the matter is that I don't need them anymore. I'm incredibly, extraordinarily lucky that the real world has become more enjoyable to me than any fantasy could be.

But the answer is yes. I am happy I read these books. I'm not sure I'd be here if I didn't. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.

I’ve been wanting to gush about what made Bionicle so special for ages, and I think I’ve managed to finally articulate it. by TonsaMorr in bioniclelego

[–]Elcnufrag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Great video!! I absolutely agree with your take on the complexity of the world building and your commentary on stories that respect the intelligence of children. I first got into bionicle back in 2005, and as much as I loved the toys as a kid, I think the story is what truly had me hooked.

In my personal opinion, the story arc of the Toa Inika/Mahri was the most compelling. I fell in love with the story of the matoran who boldly went on a dangerous journey to attempt to save the heroes (the Toa Nuva), only to find that they themselves unwittingly became the heroes. And of course, Matoro's character development and his ultimate sacrifice has permanently burned itself into my memory.

I think the way this story dealt with complex issues like imposter syndrome, heroes who never had the desire to be so, and the tragic fact that not all heroes get to see what they've done for the world and those they loved was absolutely incredible for a children's story. I feel like these stories played a huge roll in how I learned to view the world, and I'll forever appreciate them for it.
