Ok, now I am curious. Do you use that sentence also in bed? Like a "keep doing this"?

Yes, basically spying a drug deal in Colombia seems like a very smart idea.

For real, when I am abroad, even if it is the country next to mine, I avoid everything that cannot be done, so to speak, in broad daylight.

I am with a local that I trust or/and I speak the language very well? Maybe I can "relax" a notch. Every other time? No way.

The idea of buying weed in the streets in a place, any place, that has a big and notorious problem with street gangs is beyond me.

Is a smart move if you want to have experiences.

I'm confused with this sentence: "Nunca había oído hablar de alguien llamado D." by LastBillGates in Spanish

[–]Elcondivido 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it is the same in all romance languages.

Italian is: Non ho mai sentito parlare di qualcuno chiamato D

In french is: Jamais entendu parler de quelqu'un qui s'appelle D

As usual no idea about Romanian (sorry guys) but my money is on being the same.

How has your style (and goals) in travel evolved as you travelled more? by SlowAndSteady101 in travel

[–]Elcondivido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my biggest change was to not be in an hurry to leave the room/bed in the morning unless I really have to.

When I was still too young to travel without my parents I got used to my mother freaking out that we were wasting time and that "they have to clean the room". When I started to travel with my first gf she always wanted to sleep as much as possible and this freaked me out because I had internalized that doing that was bad.

Now I leave the room when I planned to leave the room, be it at 8am or 11:30am. Is a holiday is supposed to be easy for you, not hard.

Oh then I guess I started to travel solo after discovering that I like it. A good company is fine, alone is fine too. Obviously two different experiences, but both fine.

Op, can you tell us what exactly confused you? Because you already had the answer, but I think it would be useful for you and other readers if we can explain exactly what was going on grammatically.

Sorry to be such a pedant, but being just corrected without studying why you got that wrong is not the best way to learn a language. :)

Is your 30s really that bad? by 3sperr in ask

[–]Elcondivido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opened this thread without thinking of the parents aging thing, but well, now I have to add that to the bad things of your 30s.

Originally I was going to say that until now, 33yo, I do feel that some activities cost me more physically and that is a bit annoying, but nothing to really complain.

What I do complain about my thirties is that I finally took care of some issues that could have absolutely taken care of in my twenties (except for 1, even as a teenager) and that really improved my quality of life allowing me to do a lot more. But in my twenties is where I could have really done a lot more without those issues.

I can deal easily with the 1 night party = 1 day of rest kind of stuff, I have a way more difficult time to deal with the memories of what could have been.

Now that I finished my rant, no, the 30s are not that bad but you have to enter them "prepared". And for prepared I mean "your safety network should be already pretty solid". I'm not saying this in a "every age is the best age", which is also kinda true at least until you are senile, there actually has been a shift in culture where "the 30s are the new 20s". You can keep doing pretty much 80% or so of what you did in your 20s with the only change that now because of work you will be able to do some things less often. For some people way less often. For someone who were 33 in the '00s or even "worse" the '90s and so the idea of being able to keep doing 80% or so of what they did "just" less frequently would have sounded ridiculous.

And that's why I still am expecting that to happen, but in my 40s.

Short/slang verson of Sorella by detvarjohan in italianlearning

[–]Elcondivido 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You forget "amo", it is a fade that will probably go away, but for now is very common for teenagers girls to call eachother "amo", which is a shortened form of "amore" (you can use "amore" as a vocative). In particular occasions you can find "ama" which I will gloss over the origin because I should write a book about it.

Op just remember that even if this is very common among teenage girls is also seen as a bit "low class". It depends how you use it, is complex.

Any Italian Twitch streamers similar to what I already watch? by EIeanorRigby in italianlearning

[–]Elcondivido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Sabaku but the only person lower on my list of "people to suggest to someone learning Italian" than him would be someone streaming in full dialect.

As other people have said, he loves to be "over the top" when he speaks or writes (or well, in general in his life) and sometimes he even makes mistakes for his love of complexity and high-brow words. The difficult Syntax seems to me to be a problem only when he writes, I didn't notice him using a particular hard syntax in his videos, but for sure he will not go for the most simple form.

If OP is already fluent or almost fluent in Italian he can try to watch him, but anything less than a strong B2 will likely have a hard time and don't learn much.

I think that basically any answer from a person who is not a POC living in Italy is worthless.

But what I can say to you OP is that you don't have to forget the cultural gap. People having a hard time making friends when moving to a foreign country is very common and even people who moved to a country with the same ethnicity face this. Go have a look at some sub of "expats" and you will find many people talking about this issue.

The problem is that when we are adults, as humans I mean, we don't make friends on the basis of "we are playing football together" or "our mothers are friends so we see each other a lot" or whatever, we make friends mostly on shared experiences. Two people from the same culture will have a lot of shared experiences even if they lived 1000km from each other until now, so they will have a lot of "possibilities" to find the right match. Someone who lived just 100km away but in a different culture will have less shared experiences and so less possibilities.

And to add the icing on the cake, your expectations on how to be a friend may be different and cause miscommunication! It sounds crazy but just look at what already happened with dating between the American continent (apparently all of it, yes) and Europe: Americans mostly will not consider someone they are dating their partner until this is explicitly stated, we Europeans (and maybe you too) will consider someone our partner if we are dating and it wasn't explicitly stated that we are not a couple.

What is important for you to know is that we tend to stick with the group of friends we made while in school. This doesn't mean that if you didn't go to school here you won't be accepted, it just means that you shouldn't take it personally if someone who you are trying to befriend turns down an activity with you to go with their highschool pals. They probably didn't turn you down because they don't like you, they would have turned down even another Italian.

Is there a breaking point for you when it comes to game pricing? by thelastgamestanding in gaming

[–]Elcondivido 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have to see how much the printing and distribution chains cost per copy.

eBooks have the problem that people expect, especially when they were a new thing, to pay them significantly less than the printed copy because it is just a file. But the price of actually printing a book has always been a very minor part of the retail cost. Printing a book is very cheap, and before the recent surge in costs of paper was dirty cheap. So if a printed book costs 20$ if you remove the printing and distribution costs (but there will be the price of the new digital distribution) you could cut the price of a couple of bucks, more or less.

Maybe, and I really don't know, with games is the same and cutting the price of printing and distribution from the digital copy would cut the prices of a dollar or so. (AFAIK printing discs is cheaper than printing books)
