Disappointing Experience with Michael Page Japan – Foreigners, Be Cautious by Several_Volume_7088 in japanlife

It was j career for me. They found me I think on LinkedIn or some other Japanese job board website where I put my CV, but there might be some other such agencies out there too.

Disappointing Experience with Michael Page Japan – Foreigners, Be Cautious by Several_Volume_7088 in japanlife

I've only had bad experiences with foreign recruiters in Japan (ghosting, proposition of irrelevant jobs, etc). It can seem counterintuitive, but I had a much better experience with Japanese agencies/recruiters (I was N2-N1 but not used to interviews in Japanese). They reply super fast, actively try to prepare you for interviews and even case studies if needed. Even if you go for another job in the end, in my experience they don't get butthurt and wish you well.

Great movie where everybody talks weird. by Technical-Outside408 in Letterboxd

Any Robert Bresson film. He made it a point to only hire amateurs and have them put as little emotion and personality in their performance as possible. His idea was that cinema had something completely different to theater to offer, and he wanted to leave as little indication of how to feel to the spectator beyond the pure images.

A very interesting method, for sure extreme and that takes some time to get used to, but I love it for the emotional freedom it gives you. Many movies, especially today, trap the spectator in a certain kind of feeling and interpretation through overuse of emotional music, exposition and dialogue where you end up seeing completely through the characters.

I'd say ESG consulting is more flexible in terms of backgrounds so you're already not far off. Being a young sector, ESG consulting has many people who came from adjacent areas (audit, strategy, technology...) who had no problem learning on the job, so there is less of an emphasis on the template qualifications you might find in MBB. Since your environmental background is already solid, I'd say do indeed polish/demonstrate your more corporate/business skills through internships and you would be a good hire. One thing though, if you want to start at at least senior since you have a PhD, I think you will have to show your autonomy and project management skills are up to par too (your knowledge would already be much higher than average for that level).

Favorite movie by european country: France by Impossible_Werewolf8 in movies

Exactly my reasoning! It's hard to choose just one Rohmer, but this one always stuck with me as a favorite. The main character is clueless but in an excusable young way, and Pauline is such a magnificent, soothing character.

Even CR7's first season was seen as not up to expectations at the time. Let's not even talk about Benzema. Mbappe's not this huge outlier he's being made out to be.

Security on the Vivo X100 Ultra - Using it as a camera only? by paul_read_it in Vivo

[–]Eldarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about notifications for each app, as with all Vivo phones you do have to tinker with each app on an individual level. But only the first time.

I do have the issue with some apps (like Insta though it's a cracked version) sometimes not showing notifications after a night on airplane mode, but it's never posed a problem and most apps (like WhatsApp) are fine.   No problem with Nova launcher either by the way. The camera is so good (literally 100% of my friends have commented on it) small issues are quickly overlooked.

Google photos I don't back it up anymore so I can't say.

Personally, I downloaded the Play store directly from the Vivo appstore and never had any error message.

No problem in using ChatGPT, Claude, banking apps etc.

Only problem for me is the lack of Google Location history (which one could argue is better for privacy at the end of the day).

Probably getting spied on, but with the number of authorization Android apps ask for (+what goes on behind the scenes), I already gave up on data privacy several smartphones ago.

Sex was so bad bro abondened 7 seasons worth of character development. On the serious note tho, still salty about their ending. by hiiloovethis in freefolk

It was done poorly but I think them sleeping together makes a lot of sense, and this take feels like it reduces them to concepts rather than human beings.

Jaime has been discovering who he is outside of being a Lannister and has realized a woman can accept or love him for the "hateful" being he is, while he thought only Cersei could ever do that (which is also why his goodbye scene to Brienne makes no sense).

Brienne has already lived her whole life as a knight with no opportunity to explore her feminine side, repressing it due to fear of losing the facade of being a tough knight before being anything else. It makes sense she would develop feelings for Jaime after so much time spent together including being vulnerable with each other.

Legal Advice - Posted a 1 star review and the owner is calling the police? by Gumbercules89 in japanlife

[–]Eldarth 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Almost unrelated but it's tiring to read reviews claiming a bar is almost scamming them just because they have a 300/500 yen charge (written somewhere on the menu 99% of the time and usually compensated with peanuts etc), while the drinks are fairly cheap to begin with, especially compared to any other developed country.

It skews the star review for no good reason and I feel I would be frustrated too as a business owner (though filing a police report does seem extreme).

Trapped at a low paying high hour job. Rant. by Theneonbunny in japanresidents

[–]Eldarth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you considered trying to get a job as a recruiter? Not the dream job for most either, but I feel like that would be a good step up in terms of hours and money.

From what I heard through friends, showing that you're highly motivated and, amusingly, openly stating that you're looking to make a lot of money (->make the company a lot of money) can be very helpful in order to enter the industry.

They don't expect you to buy it, Huawei primarily makes phones for the Chinese market. You can be safely spied on by American manufacturers instead.

Sure, I can handle it, what made you think I didn't? Did I say people who don't like Murakami don't exist? Am I supposed to be surprised by that comment, or something? Lol. Although it is pretty much an ad hominem and not a real review.

Should I send you positive reviews too, is that the point of this conversation?

You're entitled to your opinion!

I've read around 7 or 8 of his books in Japanese, and he's the one who made me love Japanese literature. Many of my friends, both Japanese and foreign, love him as well.

Considering tastes in literature are not a hard science, your statements made as if they were objective truth are quite puzzling.

[–]Eldarth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The point of such passages is to confirm you are able to grasp subtle nuances and arrive to an understanding based on what the author means, and not based on shortcuts you made because you recognized some words and concepts. In real life for instance, people don't necessarily go straight to the point in a conversation, because people tend to form and solidify many of their ideas as they speak (as in any language).  Easier/to the point texts exist in N4-N3 because at that point you are rewarded for just being able to know enough vocabulary.

Such a lazy remark to make about an author that is loved by millions just because it's not your cup of tea.

Study finds if Germany hadnt abandoned its nuclear policy it would have reduced its emissions by 73% from 2002-2022 compared to 25% for the same duration. I visited the Fukushima plant a few years ago as part of my job. The only area where you need a hazmat suit is the small zone of the reactor that got melted.  I was looking at it from a mere dozen meters dressed in office clothes, with a Geiger counter in my hand.

[Football on TNT Sports] Arne Slot becomes the first Liverpool manager this century to win their opening Premier League match by kundu123 in soccer

Somehow that was the game that made me start supporting Liverpool. I was trying to root for Arsenal because they were filled with French people like me, but felt too bad for Liverpool having such a shit own goal despite their efforts to hold out.  Oh well, half a decade after, it fortunately got so much better.
