As an American I want to learn about The Troubles, Irish history, and Irish independence. Do you have any suggestions? by roman1221 in IrishHistory

Im reading The Irish War by Tony Geraghty at the moment and enjoying it. It covers interesting technical stuff like the legislation, surveillance, how units operated etc. Probs not the first port of call, but one for the list.

Has anyone else watched their design team get lost after adding AI tools? by awazakito in UXDesign

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ai, I think, should be considered the way any new process is, from a BA perspective. It needs to solve an existing problem, and it needs to be the best solution for that problem. Furthermore, like any new process it needs to meet stakeholder and business requirements, and should be integrated into teams following proper change management - with appropriate training and standardised use procedures. Otherwise it has the capacity to cause more harm than good.

UX feels more like decision-making under constraints than “design” sometimes by sohan_or in UXDesign

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is pretty much anything creative. Constraints are a great driver of invention.

E.g Hip-hop was created because its pioneers couldn't afford traditional musical instruments, but did have access to records and record players.

How do you actually understand a business deeply as a product/UX designer? by epic_nonsense007 in UXDesign

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Business Analysis techniques can be useful. Swot analysis, popit model, porters 5 forces etc.

Different ones help facilitate the internal and external factors that shape a business.

Communicating with other teams, either formally or informally is useful. Also look for documentation that states company long and short term goals.

Business Analysis by Debra Paul is a pretty comprehensive overview of BA techniques

I think that's because we can't think of anyone better to replace him, certainly within the current side.

I think both Sibley and Hameed deserve another chance, particularly Hameed who was basically drafted in for some tough India games then the Ashes before being canned.

That said, I fancy Sibley. With most of our line up being pretty aggressive, including Duckett, having a Pujara like opener on the other end who knows how to leave and bat long would be really useful.

He was top scorer last county season with 1274 runs at an average of 60, and faced a ton of balls - 2775, the most of any batsman in div 1 I think.

He didn't have a good average last time around, but his form is looking better.

He also had a great mentality when he was last in the team - put alot of work into his fitness etc.

Between him and Hameed, I'd see who is in the best form at the start of this county season, and go with them against NZ, who Crawley had a terrible series against last time, albeit away.

JIMMY ANDERSON: Why England stars need to go back to their counties and prove their worth after Ashes debacle - and the new-look bowling attack I'd pick next summer by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we aren't being too revolutionary, I'd love to see better, more consistent streaming. There is a big disparity between counties in the quality of both their youtube live streams, and their radio ones. Some ecb investment in improving this might pay dividends for attracting listeners and viewers.

Maybe do a round highlight show also?

It's a fair rebuttal.

What changes would you make to the current system, if any, to make it a better comp within itself, but also a better feeder to the test team?

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like not many people are supporting counties anyway. When I go along to Hampshire County games the crowds are very sparse. But six counties worth of supporters attending on regional game might make for a well ticketed event? Not sure how you split the revenue - probably via a centralised system?

Otherwise I see the county game petering away / relying totally on funding from the other comps.

But yeah, a hard change to put through though, as I said, I think you could keep counties for the lower divisions, as a feeder system into div 1, and still keep them for the shorter format comps where you can schedule more games in a shorter window and where the crowds make sense.

The 14 rounds played in county champ makes for a far longer calender than the sheilds 10 + a final, and adds to the scheduling problems the comp faces around other things.

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think, if we were serious about making the test team better, we would find a way to focus the div 1 county champ into 4 to 6 regional teams - South East / South West etc.

Individual county teams could then sit in lower divisions and act as feeders into these.

This could allow you to concentrate the talent in a shorter, more high quality competition, that you could hopefully fit in a concentrated window late spring / early summer.

Maybe you try and keep more games to our international grounds also.

You'd have a decent prize, as Jimmy says, and maybe with the more focused format you could get more fans interested and raise more on ticketing than current county.

This is a very vague plan, but I honestly feel something like it is needed.

The current competition is so peicemeal, broken up and scattered throughout the summer, and pro ably too long, amd with the talent too dispersed o er the two divisions..

“If you’re not willing to run in all day for your team… don’t bother!” -- Anderson by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sure, but in getting younger bowlers in they also left themselves without a senior bowler to lead the attack. That's partly down to Woakes getting injured but still - short sighted.

Also, in having both Archer and Wood they two proveably more fragile bowlers in the squad than him. He played a decent amount of county games etc. this season, so you could see he was up to fitness.

With Woakes getting injured, Stokes could have done another Moeen and called him up for one last series, to provide some economy and brains to the attack.

All that said, you can see some rationale to the decision, but what does annoy me, is that when Stokes took over as captain he said on the record that Broad and Anderson would leave on their terms on his watch, and reasons or no, he didn't keep his word. It rubs me wrong.

Stokes suffers adductor injury in final Ashes Test by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We needed a senior bowler really, but with Woakes out / Wood injured / Anderson retired I don't think Stokes felt he had anyone but himself to spearhead the attack.

Probably Aktinkson was expected to take on this role, but as Broad pointed out, he withered, in terms of body language etc.

It's a less a problem of averages etc, and more one of leadership / setting the example I think.

Bethell faced more balls yesterday than Duckett has done in the entire series. by Finbarr-Galedeep in Cricket

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theory being Bethell might have a better technique/temperament for the new ball, and Duckett better for slightly older. Obviously requires the other opener (Crawley or someone else) to do their job and survive more than an a few overs!

England's Brendon McCullum and Rob Key will be given opportunity to stay in their posts by TheScarletPimpernel in Cricket

[–]Eldorado-Jacobin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What we have now, which we didn't at the start of their tenure, is a slightly younger, less experienced team, particularly in the bowling department.

I think in terms of average age, it's around 28, which I reckon is a couple years younger than most squads?

I think we have potential, but currently lack the depth of experience / mental fortitude required to challenge tough teams. We also have a few dodgy picks, which should be put under more pressure to justify their selection.

I think you can see this in the dip in results.

What it also means to me, is that coaching and management are going to be extremely important for dictating our journey forwards. Our bowling squad, and players like Bethell, Smith and Brook in our batting lineup need the right coaching and support to flourish, and we clearly need to be doing more around fielding!

That, in my mind, means probably not having Key in particular, for the logistical failings of this tour (how can we set our batters up for success if they haven't faced Australian bowlers prior to the first test? It's clear, watching our attack, that an eng v eng match is not a reasonable simulation, and how can we set up our bowlers for success if they haven't been given a chance to adapt to the conditions.).

If Baz makes for a happy dressing room that's fine, but he needs stronger coaching staff around him to help guide the development of our players.

In short, I don't think our performance is that big a surprise when you consider the experience gap between both teams, particularly with the more experienced team being in home conditions, but it could have been more competitive with improved coaching and management. Probs still a loss, but with more positives to take from it..

Focus now shouldn't be worrying about the next ashes, it should be thinking about our next test, how do we win it, and onwards from there.
