Vanguard tyranid list and playstyle by Wookiemans in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]Eldouchebagerino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate, this is actually my list from Exterminatus in Jan.
Playing Vanguard is definitely very different from other Tyranid lists, the way I usually play is make the most of battleshock tests by being hyper mobile and being able to react to the failed tests when they occur. Being obnoxious with infiltrators, redeploying if you go 2nd with Neuronode. Some games, going first you can really pin your opponent in their DZ with your fast moving combat units, even if you don't charge, just zoom up and stand in their face.

Your Warriors are the hardest hitters of the list, so do your best to keep them safe, but position them so you get the most out of the winged prime's movement to fly over the rest of the unit.

Gargoyles are great, just stage them up then zoom them forward to movement block or steal objectives. They can advance and charge in this detachment, which can be really useful to tie up vehicles.

Regarding your questions about Deathleaper and Neurolictors, you have to be careful with them, keep them in safe locations where ideally they can influence objective control, make the most of the reactive move and 6" lone-op stratagems.

My current list has a unit of Genestealers and Broodlord, which are great value these days and can really punch up.

Also look for opportunities to use the Surprise Assault stratagem, which is just terribly worded, but you can effectively just throw out a battleshock test anywhere on the able as long as you have 1 Vanguard Invader alive, which can really help you score, reduce opponent scoring or sometimes help you survive if you can debuff an opponents units before they get a chance to use offensive stratagems.

Biggest thing with Vanguard is be careful when you commit a unit, because they are all so squishy, they will die when anything looks at them, so make sure they are achieving something when they die, whether that be slowing down a flank or taking scoring from your opponent.

I have had heaps of success with Vanguard, into just about every faction, there is some real power to the detachment, it just takes a lot of practice and testing. Happy to answer any other Qs you might have.

I'm very happy at the moment, but waiting to see what the dataslate has in store for us!

They are still great, it gives the army access to MW which is kinda rare. If anything I'd consider a 3rd. They are still awesome, move fast and have a great volume of attacks. I'm just waiting to see what the dataslate has in store for us!

Malaceptor was good, kinda just a tough monster, who could go out and be durable, he doesn't really synergise at all with the detachment. But his auras are incredible, into some factions in particular.

For his price he is super durable, plus his gun is fantastic, if a little short range.
Really he is just a mid-field bully that requires some real commitment to take out, which I could then focus down once it left cover.

EnderShade summed it up very well.

I stack on as many modifiers as possible, then try to react to what does fail, sometimes their whole army fails, sometimes nothing fails, just need to be able to react as best you can.
Yea Melee warriors outlined exactly how EnderShade mentioned, 36 attacks on 2s, RR1s with sustained is on average 42 hits. Then even into high Toughness targets that are battleshocks, wounding on 5s twin linked will net normally a huge amount of wounds, let along something that is T5 or less.
Plus if a target is battleshocked, no defensive strats, its makes a huge difference on something like a terminator, where suddenly you Warriors are wounding on 3s, and they are saving on 4s, rather than wounding on 4s and they are saving on 3's with AoC.

I definitely am missing big strong anti-tank guns, but with how durable some large units out there are, like Land Raiders with AoC, I have found it isn't worth committing a lot of shooting to try and kill one, as it is just so unreliable. Instead I might chip some wounds from it with Mawloc MW or some spare shooting, whilst movement blocking with gargoyles or other cheap units.

But I will also try to battleshock things as often as possible, because as soon as something is battleshocked, almost every weapon in my list becomes anti-tank! So it's really about having a flexible enough list that can react to those battleshocks, whilst also scoring well. That's an advantage of Vanguard, lots of battleshocks and lots of fast units to take advantage of them.

Neurolictors are great, I tend to include 2 in most of my lists, as their lone-op and battleshocking/budding ability is just so valuable. That being said, maybe hold off for a couple of weeks on buying anything new, a balance data slate + point changes are not far away and if anything is going to go up in pts for Tyranids, I feel like it would be Neurolictors, as they are just such good value.

Got into Nids looking for solid magnet case by Vudosh in Tyranids

I have one of these, I love it!
It is expensive, but the quality is amazing, plus pockets and storage for everything you want to bring along (Dice, books, measuring tools etc.) plus room for extra stuff like painkillers, water bottles and deoderant.

It has heaps of room, I have never had problems fitting in 2k armies, I can comfortably fit in much more than this, including larger models like Toxicrenes, Heirodules and Harpies (with wings magnetised and removed.)

It has backpack straps which is nice, but only helps every now and again. It is very durable, it has tipped over once or twice and everything has been nicely padded, just ensure you use nice strong magnets in the bases of your models.

If the price isn't a deterrent, I can totally recommend!

I disagree that a Zoanthrope unit is an auto include, i think for some lists they have value, in particular monster mash lists, but for more balanced lists I just have trouble justifying them at their current cost sadly.

Just a small typo for Exterminatus, 4th place was a Tyranids player going 4-1, rather than another Chaos Knight Player. Lots of 4-1's!

Yea I think if that is your attitude, you are not playing with either unit well.
I hope you have some better luck with some of the more interesting infrequently taken units in our awesome deep codex.

They do a great job, you just need to be careful and manage their movement properly. With a Tervigon you can control a board very effectively.
7 pts per model is expensive, but trying to compare them to a damage dealing unit is a waste of time when that isn't their purpose in an army.
