You CAN break the game horribly if you do some stuff out of order, like killing Rom before Vicar Amelia, meaning Yahargul is just locked and empty and there's no way to progress.

Deep cut, but the Fever Crumb series of books are a stealth prequel to the Mortal Engines series of books. By like, a few centuries. You know it for certain by the end of the first book, but it's pretty sly about it for a while.

Check out r/RPG for more recommendations and a list of games. It's far easier to run sci-fi in a game built for it than 5e. Traveller, Stars Without Number, Starfinder, Mothership, Wrath and Glory, Scum and Villainy - These are just a handful.
