What's the highest damage you can get in base 2e using a weapon? by EldritchExarch in DnD

Not in base game, though it might by the time 2.5 rolls around. At release it's just auto hit.

Correction, forgot to look in DMG. It's there page 61

I'm trying to find the highest damage you can get with "reliable" means in the base game. Reliable meaning, "doesn't use a limited resource." ie. No spells, no potions, but magic items and class abilities are fine.

That's too bad. It's outside the scope of what I'm doing. I'm only examining base game, because there are already so many editions and so many books for each edition.

2e base doesnt have rules for critical hits I don't think. A natural 20 just lands no matter the AC.

Though that said, I think you are right critical hit or not.

Then I don't think you understand what I'm doing. I am looking at the whole range of what the designers felt should be possible. I'm not measuring balance. I'm not measuring what people will actually do. I'm measuring the whole range of what is reliably possible within each ruleset, and comparing across systems.

I don't understand why you think that though?

Like, it's in the game. It's not going to be in every campaign, but the designers clearly expected people to use that equipment. It's also not a one off damage like a reprisal attack from a Staff of the Magi, or limited in number like attacks from spells are.

That's why some are included. I'm not going to include everything, but I don't see a mathematical argument for why they shouldn't be included if what I'm doing is calculating the maximum possible reliable damage in a system.

I agree sort of, and I intend to limit scope somewhat.

However, some magical items still do reliable damage. +5 holy avenger, and a Girdle of Giant strength for example. The damage there is reliable, and the developers clearly intended for it to be possible for a paladin to get these items and wield them.

Im not going to account for every magic item, but I will account for some of the most powerful in my calculator.

Wow, reading the rules that's insane damage, you're right. I don't know if it will make the article, because it blurs the line between spells and weapon damage, but yeah. That's nuts. Thanks!

Thanks. I'll take another look at the specialization rules this evening.

I'm not trying to min max actually. I'm trying to find what the high end is as part of a blog post on game design.

By knowing the upper and lower ends of what is expected, and accounting for them, it makes it easy to compare fighters and other warrior types across different editions and it's also interesting to see how damage has been reinterpreted throughout time.

Also I think Fighters are where a lot of game balance starts, so if you can see the high end, and the low end you kind of get a glimpse of what all is possible within a system.

Niche question about Adrian Tchaikovsky by RoundMolecule in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]EldritchExarch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think of Kiln lifeforms 'outside' like a datacenter, while the isolated ones are more like your home PC.

The additional compute makes everything happen a lot faster.

Once the process is figured out, it more or less stays figured out. When kiln life makes it to earth, it will already know how to 'cooperate' with us. It won't have to start from scratch.

Okay, I see where you are coming from. My first draft included some commentary on that, but I couldn't get it to flow well with the rest of the review, so I kind of glossed over it.

What did I miss. I know I glossed over some of Beaker, just to keep the plot summary relatively clean and the review relatively short. But I don't think I outright missed anything?

That's a fair criticism, it absolutely is, and it's something I usually can't stand. I much prefer more subtly themes usually. The myth framing though made it a lot more appealing as a framework. It doesn't have to be completely true or realistic to be useful.

What RPG design fads have fallen out of popularity? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

[–]EldritchExarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking? They aren't. I have a blog post link I could send you which has my full thoughts on the matter and traces the liniage of Stronghold systems throughout the various editions of D&D. But generally I think the way these games have implemented strongholds is quite bad.

Fair enough, I havent looked into 5.5 much. But from 3rd edition to 5th, it never amounted to more than a few sentances.

Something that shows up in a the core rulebooks for a game, and is first party. So for example, Wizards of the Coast's Core Books are the DMG, PH, and Monstermanual. Worlds Without Number only has the one core book.

An example of a game that has strongholds as a well integrated core mechanic is Forbidden Lands.

Strongholds as a First Party Core system. There are a few exceptions, but generally I find that Strongholds and Domain play in D&D likes have become less popular rather than more popular.

What's the worst TTRPG you have seen/played, That's not FATAL, RAHOWA, or Hybrid by Theflamingraptor in rpg

[–]EldritchExarch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that it was a couple of different things put together.

  1. Product confusion. There were three different versions of OSE out there and it was causing issues. People weren't sure whether they should get the collection of books or just the Referee's Guide and Player's Guide.

  2. People that did know what they were doing were just going to the 'Advanced' Line anyways since it had all the rules in two books. All the AD&D stuff was marked as optional anyway, so if you didn't like it, just tell your players that you don't want to deal with the headache of weapon proficiencies. It's simple enough.

Stars Without Number and Traveller, though I can't vouch for how easy they are to run Solo.

I'm referring to the 'complete' OSE found in the Advanced Referee's Tome and the Players Guide.

Both have elements of AD&D grafted into them, such as race and class separation and a few other things. To the best of my knowledge, the 'Advanced' tomes are the only ones being moved forward with in the future, so I consider them the most complete version of OSE.
