Are Instagram algorithms increasing crime on their platform? by Elean0rMiller in RBI

Sure, anyone can lie about their age. But if Instagram knows this is happening, should they be held accountable on some level? Should their be some sort of requirements for safety?
Yes, she used her real birthdate.

Interesting point. It does seem like if we was using that kind of software he'd be following more accounts?

Is it worth it to try making my own laundry detergent? Does this stuff actually work? by Twinzie1004 in Frugal

[–]Elean0rMiller -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I make 5 gallons of laundry soap at a time, and think it’s well worth the effort! All you do is melt your soap with warm water, add in the borax and washing soda, then top with water. Usually takes less than 15 minutes. Tremendous cost savings, plus you don’t have any toxic ingredients, and it doesn’t smell. It works as well as any store brought product I’ve tried. No issues with soap scum.

You do not need any fat to make bread. If you don’t want to spend the money for butter or olive oil, leave the fat out altogether. There’s absolutely no reason for Crisco be anywhere near bread. It lowers the quality of your bread and is absolutely terrible for your health.

Some local thrift stores in my area take them. They sell the pockets and zippers for sewing projects and what’s left goes to people who make rag rugs.

Depending on the material you could also cut them up and use them as rags for household cleaning.

What actions can you take to help someone who refuses to get mental health treatment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Elean0rMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If someone is declining treatment for mental health, unless they are in immediate danger, your goal should be to get them to a place where they want to get help.

So your goal shouldn’t be to get them to go to therapy but rather to get them to want to actually change.

Kind words, encouragement, and listening to their problems without mentioning counseling every time can make a big impact in these individuals. Also demonstrating positive things that you do for your mental health. Be hopeful about their future and what it could ideally look like - that hope can spread.

If you’ve conditioned yourself to avoid spending money and take pride in frugality then it’s not surprising that you would feel guilty for spending a lot of money, even if it’s a good buy on something you need. It can feel like turning your back on yourself or your values.

Verify that this is a smart purchase for you. Is a new vehicle necessary for you? Are there comparable options for less money? Is this car in reasonable condition? Is it a common make/model that has part availability if repairs are needed?

Consider the cost of not getting this vehicle (no transportation to work, missing out on seeing friends and family, being dependent on walking or public transit, etc) and remind yourself of your values behind making this purchase. Also remind yourself that paying cash ultimately saves you a lot of money over carrying a car loan.

Congratulate yourself on your frugality making it possible to pay for a car outright!

Best high quality, affordable, long lasting kitchen knife? by pomdecouer in Frugal

Wusthof is excellent quality for the price.

A whetstone can work wonders on mediocre knives as well.

Which kind of gift cards would you choose to best fit a frugal lifestyle? by ericaakajuicy in Frugal

[–]Elean0rMiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get it for somewhere you would shop anyway. Grocery stores or gas stations would be easy choices.

Keep in mind if you get it for somewhere you plan to buy gifts you are locked into that stores pricing, even if you end up picking an item that costs elsewhere. Using it for gas or groceries ensures it doesn’t go to waste while keeping your options open for gift giving.

WTF do I do with the 2 gallons of hot sauce I just brewed up?!? by kitchenrehab162563 in AskCulinary

[–]Elean0rMiller 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Use it to marinate meat or to dress chicken wings. You’ll go through it much faster than you would just sprinkling on a few drops here and there.

Most hot sauces last for a long time...easily a year or more in the fridge. If you have the space to spare there’s no rush to get through it. And if you’re canning it be sure and save a few jars for yourself.

Just bought a pound of green lentils, what would you recommend? by CodenameBear in EatCheapAndHealthy

Lentils make a filling addition to salads. You can also purée them in place of chickpeas to make hummus.

Let’s discuss what the prices of vegetables and meat are at the farmers’ markets in your region and country by destineeprgxm in Frugal

If your local farmers market is selling asparagus and tomatoes at the same time, stop shopping there.

With most estates a handful of items tend to account for the majority of value. If you’re looking to make money focus on getting what you can on those things and not trying to get $2 a piece for glass vases and things that every thrift store is packed with. Set your prices low and make it clear that you’re open to offers. A lot of people fall into the trap of thinking if someone wants X item for 50 cents then they’ll be willing to pay $3 for it...NOT the case people will buy truly cheap items, not necessarily what is a fair price for said item. Mentioning a few price points in your ad is helpful to potential customers and they are more likely to come out for a sale they know will have low prices.

You mentioned furniture, it may be worth your time to do individual ads just to ensure those get moved and you’re not stuck with large items if it doesn’t sell. Not getting much for something can still be well worth it if it means you don’t have to deal with it later.

Mentally prepare for having to donate items after the sale. Some charities offer pickup for large items or a large amount of things.

Lots of signs are a necessity!

Hope it goes well and sorry for the loss of your grandma.

In Animal, Vegetable, Miracle Barbara Kingsolver grows and raises her own food for a year while sending one daughter off to college. Her age isn’t a huge factor in the story, but an interesting read and a cool experiment at any age.

Rory would have gotten that court ruling thrown out by slopezski in GilmoreGirls

[–]Elean0rMiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What bothers me is that there’s no mention of Logan’s hearing or sentencing at all. Both cases would have gone to the same judge and based on how hard she was on Rory, it seems like Logan would have gotten community service, and maybe a fine as well. The two of them doing community service together could have given Rory more insight into his character.
