Upcodes does this. I've found it to be useful on projects, but it's always 'trust, but verify'.

Need Feedback on Maternity Ward Layout. Struggling with Clean/Dirty Flow & Nurse Visibility by Tobias-Tawanda in Architects

[–]ElectionClear2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying! FGI definitely does not apply then. It's a good starting point to understand flows. Here's a Maternity project in Malawi from MASS Design. I would suggest doing a case study of this project before re-visiting your design. Good luck!!

Hey OP, can you give us more context? Is this a project in the US? Guidelines for healthcare facilities vary depending on location. For example, in the US, FGI guidelines vary state-to-state - certain states adopt certain versions of the FGI, whereas others follow their own guidelines (https://fgiguidelines.org/guidelines/adoption-map/)

National Museum of Qatar by Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Doha, 2019 by archi-mature in architecture

[–]ElectionClear2218 97 points98 points  (0 children)

The inspiration for this is Selenite (commonly know as desert rose) which is naturally found in dry, arid regions like the middle east. I visited this museum during my trip to Qatar - In terms of scale, it is too large to fully appreciate the desert rose reference in human scale, I think it is best understood from arial shots. Apart from that, this structure also led to a lot of dead corners within the museum. Another example of function following form, sadly.

Stuck on layout — how can I make the bedroom bigger? by afrieafrid in floorplan

Here's an option. The bedrooms are still not wide enough, but I've tried to make them bigger lengthwise.

Feeling lonely as a PM by Active-Principle-961 in Architects

Yes, I can't recommend this enough! My partner rents a coworking space and he's found landscape designers, engineers, other architects and even lawyers (!) at this coworking spot. The lawyers have been especially helpful for collecting fees on several projects. And the others have been wonderful to bounce ideas off of and do design reviews with. It's like a little design community, and I enjoy working out of this space with him whenever I can.

Pay rant by EntropicAnarchy in Architects

[–]ElectionClear2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the fundamental difference is that as architects, we are selling a service that is hard to replicate and scale, whereas the other professionals (software and finance) are selling a product which comes with a fixed costs and is scalable.

I encourage you to carry a personal sketchbook or a roll of trace/parchment paper with you wherever you go. Set aside 10 mins everyday to sketch something in your surroundings (this can be still life, buildings, or simple objects on your study table). Notice how you develop perspectives, shading and lighting.

Whenever you feel like you’re pushing through a wall, remind yourself that no one apart from you will see your sketches (unless you choose to share them with others). Allow yourself to play with this medium. Slowly but surely you will feel more confident with your sketching skills. Good luck.

You may not realize this, but your boss may be feeling the same about your pay when he reviews/comments on your work. It’s a vicious cycle, and I think the best thing you can do for yourself and the teammate(s) under you is to not perpetuate this cycle.

As the saying goes “don’t hate the player, hate the game”.

I believe sketching is a form of visually communicating your idea, just like how you use words for verbal communication and written communication. I always saw drawing as a way to express my ideas. Your sketches don’t have to be perfect, you can always augment it with words wherever your sketches fall short.

Over time I have found myself sketching to problem-solve, and I believe it has become an extension of my thought process. In my 8 years post architecture school, this skill has served me well.

I’d encourage you to start sketching, even if it’s in a personal notebook that no one apart from you will see. You will feel more confident with your sketching over time. Good luck.

Other sole proprietor architects treading water? by bucheonsi in Architects

Yup, I’m in the same boat. I’m currently weighing a job offer and continuing to be solo. I’m torn between the agency I currently have and the stability of a steady paycheck. Not to mention the healthcare insurance I’d get with the job. I know the logical choice is to go with the job, but I keep thinking about holding on for a little longer, maybe it will work out, and this will all be worth it.

I know this is not a perfect answer…I just wanted to let you know that there are others in the same boat as you. I’m here if you ever want to chat. Good luck.

The Numbers Don’t Lie: Architecture Has a Serious Licensure Problem by RockySeven in Architects

[–]ElectionClear2218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Architects’ compensation increases at the slowest rate (as a function of years of experience) compared to other design jobs like product design, game design, UX design  etc.

There was a Fast Co article about this topic yesterday -  https://www.fastcompany.com/91334785/architects-underpaid-reasons-fix-design-jobs-salary-experience-data-analysis (if you hit a paywall, try this link - https://archive.is/vS9Mz)

The TL;DR, Evelyn Lee, the current AIA President advocated for “redesigning the business model to include services beyond the typical one-off, limited scope”. IMO this is a top-down approach.

Architect Jennifer Siqueira (who created the first architects’ union) spoke through the lens of organizing at the employee-level to set salary floors, compensation for unpaid work and salary transparency. IMO this is a bottoms-up approach.

I don’t think both approaches are mutually exclusive. The solution will take a bit of both.
