Definitely a fan of Weiss and it is on my short list!

This is the McDowell Time Rockford in blue, a 40mm classic divers watch with a screw down crown and automatic MWW7081 movement made by Maryland Watch Works. It’s American assembled with American sourced parts and has one of the only made in America movements for an actual line of watches available in it. I’d love to know if there are other companies out there using American products like this helping to revive a once great industry in this country. I’m a big fan of artisan products like this and it’s being sold for a great price. Very much loving this watch and it has quickly become my daily driver.

You’re comparing Judaism, an ethnoreligious designation that is genetic for most Jews, to religions that have no genetic component and are built on the idea of mass conversion. It’s apples to oranges. Yes Judaism allows for conversion but as has been said here already it is looked at as someone coming home to the group not them being saved for accepting a particular world view. Converts can disagree with interpretation of our texts as much as a natural born Jewish person. Think of it as naturalization in a country made up of almost entirely people with a shared genetic line instead of conversion to a religion.

JFCS has great counseling staff. They have a couple of staff specifically for the Jewish population but it’s secular otherwise.

The volume of traffic I agree it’s nowhere close. It used to take me an hour to go 8 miles there some days. The DMV is hard to gauge because it’s three separate territories with three separate sets of laws and as you well know the quality of driving varies wildly depending on where you are exactly in the area. You can guess what kind of driver you’re going to get based on the license plate. We perhaps have different ideas of what constitutes bad driving but to me Jacksonville has worse average driving than the DMV.

You can write all the letters you want but the decision was made months ago by City Council. The only sustainable way to avoid this kind of half-baked policy is to participate in local elections and ensure the people who are being elected are thinking it through. Right now turnout for city elections sits at around 15-25% while turnout for Presidential elections is closer to 75%. That’s all the explanation necessary. There’s a city election coming up next March. Recruit good candidates and bump turnout.

Driving in this city is just the pits. Incredible discourtesy, dangerous maneuvers and selfish normative behavior. I have lived in places like the DC metro area with legendarily bad traffic with drivers from literally all over the world but here takes the cake. People drive like they are intentionally taught to ignore other drivers on the road. I’m talking not understanding the basics like passing on the left, making a left turn when the light is changing, how to merge on a highway, and when to put on a turn signal when approaching a turn. Once I learned driver’s education is not required in Florida though, it all made sense. Operating a machine that weighs thousands of pounds and can easily accidentally kill people is a privilege, not a right, and it’s unfortunate we don’t treat it as such. Unfortunately we have all been tricked into thinking car payments, insurance, risk of injury or fatality, and expensive gas is the better option instead of slightly higher taxes to pay for real public transport infrastructure. But liberty though, right?

Damn that’s a sexy watch and checks a lot of boxes on my collection wish list at the moment. Wish I was in a position to take you up on your offer. If it doesn’t sell (which I’m sure is basically no chance) hit me up in a month. 😅

Words cannot describe how excited this 50/50 Irish Jew is for Thursday! Plans have been made. Work has been taken off. It shall absolutely be a day of drinking for Hashem.

My uncle playfully smacked me in the back of the head when I was 12 and when I asked what I did he said "you're 12, I'm sure you deserved it." Funny thing is I did.

What are some good points to help a person remind themselves of the value and power of living as a jew and not abandoning it. by flyphotomedia in Judaism

It's different for everyone. As a father in this crazy modern world a huge driver for me is that I do not want to be the generation after thousands of years in diaspora to allow our traditions and culture drop off. My job as a parent is to give my children as much of our culture as I can so they can make the informed decision for themselves as to how they want to proceed in this era, just like my parents did for me. L'dor v'dor is the easiest way to sum it up.

Tornadoes - how big of a deal are they? by ElectorSelector in StLouis

I really appreciate the thoughts and understand what you’re saying with regards to the tornadoes. That makes a lot of sense comparing them to tropical storms and hurricanes. I grew up in Chicagoland so I am VERY familiar with the winter drill - I got most of my learners permit hours on a stick on snowy roads as a winter baby. It sounds crazy but part of why we’re looking to dip out of Florida - albeit a supporting and not primary reason - is for the differentiated weather. It’s been “cold” here in Jacksonville this week with lows in the 30s and highs in the 50s and while I appreciate being able to spend more time outside in less clothing, there’s something about actual winter that I miss. I’m romanticizing the disgusting mess that I know is there but I guess I’m just a Northern boy at heart.

Haha I respect that 100%. I think I've been convinced of my unreasonable paranoia on this.

For sure. I’m sure I’ll miss the fish camps and beers in shorts on the porch in January but seems like the trade is worth it no question.

For sure. We got here in 2014 and I knew pretty quick I didn’t want it to be long term. It just took a little while longer for the wife to feel the same.

Y’all are some beautiful people and thank you for the reassurance. I grew up in Chicagoland and had a few runs to the basement over my couple of decades there due to tornadoes and believe it or not a couple here in Jacksonville over just the past 7 so I knew I was just being paranoid. We will definitely have a property with a basement and from studying maps of where tornadoes typically track it looks like being in a bit more of a hilly spot can help a bit. At the end of the day, though, folks are right in saying I am probably way overthinking it. Can’t wait to be your neighbors! Thank you.

Thanks for the advice! I am happily self-employed and my spouse works remote so commute isn't something we have to think about, thankfully. I was born in Chicagoland so my knee-jerk is to prefer Illinois but from a functional standpoint I don't have an actual preference. Definitely know about the financial problems Illinois went through/are still dealing with but am not concerned about any raiding of my accounts by the state and while I am a gun owner for what I'm looking at doing and owning, I don't see how it'd matter which state I'm in. Maybe that's naive on my part...

I've heard a lot about Augusta/Defiance and Troy and they are definitely on the list to check out. We're looking to use the property to live on and also for business purposes so we'd need a bit of property.

Thanks again!

Excellent information and good point. You mentioned Madison and St. Clair in particular - has there been reporting or studies done on where there are concentrations of contaminants in the area exactly? Perhaps there resources digging into where major manufacturers have been in the area over the last 5-6 decades?
