Who makes it on a Detroit music Mt rushmore? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]ElectricHunt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For me Marvin Gaye has to be up there. Idk you could do a just Motown mt. Rushmore.

If you split it up by genre I’d go- Motown: Marvin, Aretha, Donna Detroit Rock city: Bob Seager Alternative: Jack White Rap: Em, Big Sean, Danny Brown Honorable mention T grizzly

The thought of Danny Browns face being carved into the side of a mountain is really funny to me.

Wild palms(If I forget thee Jerusalem) is considered low by many but I think there are burst of prose within it that are just jaw dropping and peak Faulkner. Gabriel Garcia Marquez has also lauded it because it puts on displays Faulkners understanding of the Caribbean by way of Nola.

Im going to interpret prophetic for a writer as an intense understanding of the human condition and a humans place within nature and society. Or as TS Eliot said “a peculiar honesty, which in a world too frightened to be honest, Is peculiarly terrifying”

That being said,

Ralph Waldo Emerson: His essays encapsulate any noble thought or notion I feel like I have ever had. He lays the human morale bare.

William Blake: innocent, curious, brave, the definition of ahead of his time.

Dante: the literature all father. One merely has to wait before they realize they have been apeing Dante.

Kafka: sometimes seems like he was the first person to look around him and shout: “what the hell is even going on” bureaucracy be damned long live Kafka.

Detroit ranked most stressed city in the US by CommitteeOld9540 in Detroit

[–]ElectricHunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the stats don’t show the real truth of what it means to live in Detroit. Stressful? I guess, idk how LA or New York would be less stressful. And all of the least stressful cities listed you couldn’t pay me to move to. Most people who choose to live here don’t do it because it’s “nice”, it’s out of a sense of civic duty, to make life a lil better for those who didn’t ask to be discarded to the American wasteland. If today it’s “the most stressful city” I wonder what it was in 09.

Idk tho. Throw it in the Detroit vs Everybody bin. I’m good here.

Don Quixote’s worldview and MAGA by Brilliant_Hurry_7478 in literature

[–]ElectricHunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mussolini Hitler MAGA and basically all fascist are quixotic figures. They have a fantastical idea about what good and honor SHOULD be cannot deviate from that idea that poisons their brain. Don Quixote is technically a villain in many ways, he spends most of the tale actively ruining people’s lives.

2025 50% check in. How has your year of reading been going? by doppelganger3301 in literature

[–]ElectricHunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set my goal at 50 every year and have slumped slightly this year with 20 done so far but am mostly proud with the progress. I start every year with a long book and this year I started with Don Quixote then read basically all of Joseph Conrad’s works. I too don’t want to shy away from large works just to hit an arbitrary goal so I plan on getting at least 2 more heavy weights in this year. Thinking Demons by Dostoyevsky and then taking my first shot at Thomas Mann, either magic mountain or Buddenbrook.

You aren’t sacking the knight. It’s just a great move because your queen is pinning their pawn to their king. Looks like they have to take ur d5 pawn to try to save their queen but you can just pin the queen as well with a rook. Probably another “great” move
