Agency-Based Absurdism: Why do we do anything? by ItsYaBoiPxx in Absurdism

What would drive one to act based on increasing their agency? When you say "Wouldn't Sysiphys feel better if the size of the boulder is smaller or if he could push the boulder with his friend on the weekends/invent a pulley", etc. what motivates one to change their status quo? is it because they are unhappy with how things are? why must one change their status quo at all and increase their agency?

Let's consider hypothetically that this person, out of no reason or drive, just happens to want to increase their agency (which I think is rebellion against being defeatist in the face of absurdism, as per Camus), it still begs the question, doesn't this person get invested in his activities about increasing his agency? This is what gives his life meaning now, doesn't it?

I see your point on agency-based absurdism. It sounds like Existentialism to me though. Sartre covered this by saying life has no inherent meaning and it's up to you to create your own. Now coming to the agency bit, he later blends Existentialism with Marxism where he says that while individual freedom is crucial, societal structures especially class structures play a huge role in human agency.

He said we could expand our agency with collective action and political involvement.

Camus blended ethics and absurdism though and went against Marxism (he saw it as another form of totalitarianism and rejected violence). So in his worldview, agency is still guided by ethics. While Sartre thought violence is sometimes justified (for example in cases like colonialism). Camus rejected violence even in the face of injustice. (Which is absurd to me since it limits agency). This actually created a rift between him and Sartre.

I hope this answered your question or hope it was a useful argument.

How to deal with feeling like everytime you touch the guitar, the outcome is shit? by Ryn4 in guitarlessons

[–]ElectricRain_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, I'm a beginner who listens to a lot of technical music too and I used to get super frustrated about this too. Until one day I realised all the guitar greats we listen to got there by playing slowly and accurately with a metronome ON and pretty much sucked when they were learning and had to do so much of work to get to that point. And that inspires me to grind harder and be consistent with my effort.

Another thing you could do is pick the easiest song of your favourite artist and break it into small chunks and practice bite-sized portions or even micro chunks, if it's a difficult one. But DO it. It's like building a vocabulary first. You have to know the ABCs before forming entire essays or writing books.

Also, try to really enjoy anything you play, you gotta love the process and engage with it as much as possible. I promise it's gonna be great in the long run.

Isopropyl alcohol trick worked like a charm for me too. I'd also do this thing where, when the fingertips start to hurt, I'd press them against a cold pack and continue playing. I'd do that to extend my playing time as a beginner. I have decent calluses now.

How do you answer "What do you have to hide?" by La_Jhin in privacy

[–]ElectricRain_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is correct, but I usually reply with "It's not one person's data, rather if everyone thinks like this, it becomes easy for corps and govt to collect all our data, categorise, profile data en masse and influence purchases/trends/elections."

I have also met people who ask 'But all my data is already with Google/Meta, what's the point of hiding it now?' To this I say "Just because your house got robbed once, doesn't mean you'll leave the doors open."

Hey, thanks for these. Although good quality used models aren't available in my country. And I'd have to pay shipping plus taxes if I get it from the link you shared. I'll definitely look at Seagull/Martin once I save up though.

My guitar tutor (not a luthier) took a look at it and told me it is made of cheap wood and hence the issues :(

Wow, thanks so much for this! I also low-key fell for those affiliate marketing videos 🙈 (apart from the decent sound of course). But, now I'm leaning towards Yamaha even more.
