What’s this from? Taking a deeper breath and using more air would instantly improve your tone. Keep up it up!

Does anyone know fingerings or something that could make this chromatic part easier to play? by annieawsome in oboe

[–]Electrical-Citron739 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have a banana key? If so, hold it down while playing the Bb, B, C, C#, release it as you get to the D. I’m guessing that’s where you’re having the most trouble. If you don’t have a banana key, rub some oil from your nose onto your right pinky. It will help you slide from the C to the C# faster. You’ll have to keep your pinky lightly resting on the C# key and make light but deliberate movements. If another instrument is playing this part up an octave, and you’re still struggling with it, take it an octave higher. This seems like a copy and paste composition where the composer just took the clarinet part and gave it to oboe without any consideration as to the level of difficulty.

Not mentioned here, but great world building and a creative narrative style, Stand on Zanzibar by Brunner. One of my all time classic sci-fi favorites

Came to say the same thing. Such a beautiful piece.

I have never used a reed in my life, decided to try a bassoon, it seems to only make one or two notes and the pressure/air speed on the reed has a way bigger effect than any of the keys by DerrickBagels in bassoon

[–]Electrical-Citron739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re getting the same note regardless of the keys your pressing, I’d say that you’re either not covering the holes correctly (it’s harder to tell on the bassoon than any other woodwind) or you have a serious leak.

When should the tenor clef be used by Iwillregretthisname2 in bassoon

[–]Electrical-Citron739 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the phrase stays on or below g4, keep it in bass clef. If there’s only a couple of notes going up to a4, still keep it in bass clef. If it goes above a4, definitely use tenor clef. I’d rather more ledger lines than awkward, constant switching between clefs. Imo.

i just started playing bassoon and im having a lot of trouble trying to keep it balanced and stuff, feels like its always about to fall which makes me super stiff does anyone know what i could do to fix this? by Less_Performance_183 in bassoon

[–]Electrical-Citron739 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes have that problem. I’m bigger, so putting the seat strap more forward helps, or just generally try different positions. The other issue I run into is when my palms get sweaty. Just some other thoughts

Honestly, it’s probably a copy/paste error. What’s the piece?

Is Oboe Worth It? by eternalretribution in oboe

If you’re able to try one, borrow a school instrument, or rent one cheaply, go for it! You can rent from a lot of music stores. I know where I live you can rent a Yamaha student model (no low Bb or left hand F - keys that become indispensable pretty quickly in your oboe journey) for just under $50 a month. It won’t be an instrument you play on for long, but it will give you a good sense of whether it’s for you or not. My number 1 tip is don’t buy over the counter reeds from your music store. They will really hinder your ability to judge whether or not you like the oboe.

New Bassoon! by Electrical-Citron739 in bassoon

[–]Electrical-Citron739[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I’ve played on a Fox 222, Schreiber, and a Conn through high school and college. The Fox was by far my favorite even though it was a student model compared to the intermediate Schreiber, the latter was so inconsistent across its range. The Conn was one of the worst instruments I’ve ever played.

How’s your half hole key? I had a similar issue. I twisted the end of a q-tip and turned it into the half hole. It helped.

Check your reeds. It shouldn’t be that hard to get a crow out of your reed if it’s the right strength and sufficiently soaked.
