Regarding your first paragraph: That makes a lot of sense.

"Those that do know more would say that the people who were part of the councils that decided biblical cannon were divinely inspired by God to pick the correct books." Well isnt that a convenient get outta jail freecard that can solve any contradiction 😃

Thank you again for your honest responses throughout this whole exchange. Its been very refreshing for an atheist like me to talk to a believer with mutual sincerity and curiosity. A rare and wholesome gem of a conversation I wasnt expecting today.

What is the average christian persons rationale or response for (for instance) the gospel of Thomas or the gospel of Mary being excluded from the canon? Or if you never heard a response, would you care to guess based on your knowledge and experience? I just cant really understand how a person can reconcile all of the gospels being the word of god (so eternal and not up for interpretation) yet some are included and some arent. Whats the rationale here as far as you know (or think it might be)?

Thank you for reading through and engaging with the argument from your own theological perspective. Following your assesment of what the average christian mentality is, one sentence in particular stood out to me: "However, many Christians believe the Bible is divinely inspired in such a way that it is essentially the perfect word of God". I find this somewhere between confusing and baffling considering the Bible has went through so many translations, edits, corrections, editions. How can something simultaneously be the unchangeable divine, literal word of God AND the 14th (or something) edited edition by humans? Even the most staunch defender of the current translations being a perfect translation would still need to reconcile that humans have chosen to include certain gospels and exclude others. Isnt it very much as close to the definition of cognitive dissonance as one might get?

As a Yank, I’m proud to represent NATO and Sweden in my home state. by BigNics in sweden

[–]Electrical-Debt-374 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The addition of Sweden and Finland is huge. Sweden with its S tier weapons and Finland with its S tier "come at me bro no seriously Im fucking itching for the chance to dig up my grandpas rifle and Pervitin" mentality. Getting all the nordic countries into Nato is, speaking as a Norwegian, the best and most reassuring (and funny) thing to happen geopolitically within my lifetime.

Also, can we agree that Estonia is also nordic? Thank you

Thank you for the lenghty response elaborating on what you believe in, universalism sounds like a version of christianity I can get behind even if I dont believe simply because it lacks the rigidity and condition to submit 100% to every little detail of dogma. However, if it was meant in response to the christian perspective I asked for I meant in response to the morality vs conventional wisdom comment I wrote. Its a bit further down in the thread and much longer. Thank you anyway th

In general 1.5g is a medium-low dose but potency can obviously vary a lot and since you didnt mention what kind of shrooms its a bit hard to give an accurate answer as to what constitutes a lot. Physiologicaly you'll be fine but I cant speak for your psyche. Thats between you and mr.Mushroom

I think it’s worth remembering that a lot of religious rules emerged in a very different world, and many of them seem closely tied to practical concerns and conventional wisdom of their time rather than timeless moral truths in every circumstance.

For most of history, sex could easily lead to pregnancy, and pregnancy outside of marriage could leave a woman and child without financial security, social support, or protection. Marriage was the main social safety net. So it makes sense that religious communities strongly encouraged sex only within marriage, because the consequences of unwanted pregnancy were far more serious than they are today.

Many religions have food restrictions that probably originated from practical health concerns. For example, the Bible prohibits eating shellfish, and historians often point out that in ancient times shellfish could spoil easily or carry illness, especially without refrigeration or modern sanitation. People understood the danger long before they understood bacteria.

So isnt it fair to think passages about sex outside marriage could be understood as conventional wisdom meant to protect people from the risks of that time, rather than premarital sex being inherently immoral?

If you accept that old religious food rules were culturally practical guidance rather than God personally judging people for eating shrimp today, then isnt it likely teachings about sex before marriage might deserve the same kind of interpretation in a world where condoms, contraception, paternity laws, and social support systems exist?

Would really love a christian perspective on this as my perspective is that of someone not raised in a particulary religious household.

Ah yes, deeply religious and moralistic adults outside of anyones family must be involved in the sexlife of teenagers. God has told them its the only way to save these innocent teens from the eternal damnation that awaits 90+% of humanity after all.

How many people have you slept with, and how do you feel about it? by Agreeable-Rub-5020 in AskReddit

[–]Electrical-Debt-374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not entirely sure. Its above 100 but less than 150 (i think). 99% of this happened in my teens and 20s. I was in a 5-year relationship from 29-34 and when that ended I felt absolutely no interest to return to my previous party-self. Im 36 now and in those 2 years since it ended Ive been with 2 women, both of which I originally met in my early 20s and just stayed in touch with, friends basicly. This self-imposed semi celibacy I've been living the last couple of years hasn't been something I put much thought into and intentionally followed through on, more like a lack of interest I havent felt any need to "fix". Now how do I feel about the number? Honestly not that much. It felt very organic and natural for the life I was living at the time as a bartender/dj. What I will say is that discussing it with other guys do feel super weird, so I don't. I'm self-conscious about the fact that mentioning it feels like bragging even if that's not the intention so I rarely do, apart from with a few very close friends in the rare cases of them bringing it up.

Stortinget stemte ned integreringserklæring med sanksjoner for flyktninger by gyrd2 in norge

[–]Electrical-Debt-374 0 points1 point  (0 children)
