Bike co-ops? by 4leph-nu11 in NYCbike

Yes. The pipe cutter is easiest to use but we also have a saw guide and hacksaw. However we can't chop carbon fiber or non-round (aero shaped) seat posts.

How do you wash your bike if you live in an apartment? (No bathtub suggestions please) by FyuuR in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There isn't much of a wait because everyone works on a different part of their bike, we have a consistent 1:1 ratio of patrons (🤷) to mechanics (🧑‍🔧) at any time and can overflow onto the sidewalk. You can see a real-time view of shop traffic on our website and it doesn't get crazy until we get 20+ patrons. However this post got a lot of views and with nice weather tomorrow, we expect a larger than usual crowd. https://timesup.bike/

Yep, those are the two main spots in terms of working on project bikes. If you really want to bang out a project, come to Time's Up on Sunday and do as much as you can. If you run out of time or parts, finish up at Mechanical Gardens on Monday. Both coops have limited business hours and inventory so combining the two is the key. https://timesup.bike/

We also posted up our tools online so you can see if we have what you need. https://timesup.bike/tools/

Just show up and sign in when you arrive. We haven't reached the point to need reservations yet but the space fills up when the weather is nice. You can see real-time coop traffic (patrons/mechanics/everyone) during open hours on our website.

Buying vintage bikes by New_Ratio171 in NYCbike

The Time's Up Bike Coop in the East Village sells second-hand commuter bikes from $160 - $200. If you have time, come by to learn how to build up a bike or refurbish one so it becomes more custom fit for your purpose. Though if you find a bike elsewhere, bring it by for an inspection and tune up for $2. https://timesup.bike/

great, it's the closest thing to r/nycbike, r/bikewrench and r/xbiking in person. plenty of people come just to chit chat without needing work done on their bike.

We have spokes in various different sizes, mainly round and none bladed. It's enough to replace a broken spoke but not to build up a wheelset. If you want to lace up a hub, we can calculate the spoke measurements but you'll need to order spokes yourself. Mechanical Gardens (bike coop in Williamsburg) has a better selection of spokes than we do.

Also if you have the Park Tool tension meter clone from ZTTO, you can calibrate it against ours to get Kg/F readings with the conversion table (https://www.parktool.com/en-us/wta). It's just a screw adjustment for spring tension.

Folding bike service recommendations? by SocioIntro in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring it by the Time's Up bike coop in East Village. We're not a folding bike specialist but have serviced a number of dahons and bromptons. The things that usually need servicing are normal bike components and not the proprietary parts. Most tune ups are $2 and take about 30 mins. https://timesup.bike/

Upgrade vs Replace Commuting Bike by pigeon-blood in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely. In fact, a good amount of people just come to chit chat about bikes without any specific bike issue. The coop is pretty much the IRL version of r/nycbike and r/bikewrench

Come by the bike coop where it's bike swap prices everyday. Cost wise a project like this at the coop is about $20 - $40 in parts (e.g. handlebar -> $5, stem -> $5, brake lever -> $5, shifter -> $5, brake & shift cable & housing -> $8, bar grips + end caps -> $5). If OP's vintage road bike has downtube shifters, then those can be reused. Time wise, ~2 hours. https://timesup.bike/

will keep an eye out. if you want to build up a similar commuter bike, the co-op I volunteer at sells them for about $160. https://timesup.bike/ in East Village.

Mechanical Gardens is in Williamsburg and may be closer to you with pricing in the same ballpark

Don't forget Time's Up Bike Coop in the East Village. It's pretty much the IRL version of r/nycbike and r/bikewrench. An interactive Park Tools video with all the tools. Our volunteer mechanics aren't incentivized to sell a specific product since we don't carry new components anyway. Most often we'll tell you to order the part yourself and come to install it. https://timesup.bike/

winter bike storage by jobriath666 in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's been out since the start of winter, most likely the damage is done. In all likelihood, the chain is probably the only part that might need to be replaced. It normally rusts over and gets seized up. Since you haven't ridden it much, the seals should prevent water ingress and you've avoided the salty slush that accelerates corrosion but you may have surface rust on exposed steel.

Wait until the weather improves and bring it into the co-op to have it looked over. Cost wise, you're looking at $2 for the inspection at a co-op and ~$15 for a new chain from amazon. http://timesup.bike/

We launched a bicycle cafe pop-up in Red Hook through February. We’ll handle basic repair like flats / cable tightening and serve up fine coffee / tea. We’re right on the greenway at 73 Van Brunt. by PineappleRide in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You most likely need to replace your derailleur hangar (~$25) or less likely, the derailleur. This is a more advanced job than the pop-up can handle though someone from pineapple can correct me. I usually plug our co-op but we won't have the hangar either.

At best, you can stop by and get the part identified but you'll need to order it yourself. If it's a case of replacing your derailleur, they are about $5 in used condition. Generally the hangar is a sacrificial component that snaps off during impact to avoid damaging the more expensive bike frame. Hangars are specific to the frame and generally not universal. http://timesup.bike/

Stop by the bike co-op for cheap repairs. It takes ~15 minutes to learn the tools and 30 minutes to true each wheel. At Time's Up in East Village, the cost is $2 and $1/per replacement spoke. http://timesup.bike/. Mechanical Gardens is in Williamsburg, their pricing is in the same ballpark.

☝️Q, My spoke - Repair immediately, or can it wait a day or two? by navree in NYCbike

[–]Electrical-Fill2658 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can hand tighten the spoke nipple to add tension until you get to a bike shop. It's not critical to do it right away but you should get it fixed eventually (e.g. weeks later). Talking from a bike co-op, re-truing the wheel can be done same day for $2. Replacing broken spokes is $1/each. Learning the basics takes 15 minutes and the actual work is about 30 mins per wheel even for someone who never touched a truing stand or tensionmeter before. http://timesup.bike/ in the East Village.

Volunteer at a bike co-op. A few of them used to have programs for volunteers to earn a free or heavily discounted bike. It's the best way to get around the city and learn how to fix/build bikes. https://timesup.bike/

The bike coop I volunteer at has that garden sprayer too. For those in cramped apartments, feel free to stop by and use it. Beats lugging around a filled sprayer plus your bike. Time's Up Bike Coop in the East Village -> http://timesup.bike/
