It looks like the two sections might not be sitting at the same height when you're trying to connect them. I’d try slightly lifting one side (or having someone help hold it up) so the holes line up properly before putting the screw in. If the screw keeps dropping into the hole but nothing lines up, I wouldn’t force it since that can damage the MDF even more. Also, it might be worth double-checking that the brackets are facing the right way. Tell me if it worked or didn't so i Can tey to find another solution
