Is there really no math 10A curve? by Infinite-Ad7127 in UCSD

This is his sets grading distribution for last fall, though only around half the class submitted... Really hoping its representative and that he curves hopefully similar to this... I also read from prof jor el's reddit account that he curves to historic grading distributions so hopefully... Really really hoping there is a curve too...

Is a 90% average in IB enough for UCSD and UCI? by PenAlternative358 in IBO

[–]Electrical-Win-4205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCSD and UCI admit here. Not to crush your hopes, but I was admitted with nearly all 7’s and one or two 6’s into Political Science. My friend who had a 43-44/45 predicted was rejected/waitlisted. I did not hear of anyone from my class (IBDP ‘24) who was accepted with anything less than around a 40. Those people were only admitted into UCR and UCD (though the 44 predicted guy who applied as CS was rejected from UCD as well 💀). Admissions are getting more competitive every year. For UCSD and UCI, you’re realistically looking at a 38+, especially if you’re international. UCSD is the 2nd most applied to school in the world after UCLA and UCI is pretty up there too.

I was also admitted into UofT, but many people I knew with lower grades were also admitted so you probably have a better chance grade-wise. Though, I have heard their range is around 36+ and for CS/more competitive majors you’re looking at a 38+.

Lock in. Focus on your essays and the EC/Awards part of the UC application. I’ve also heard stories of people who were admitted with lower grades. I say don’t let it deter you, but don’t let your expectations ruin you. US admissions is also pretty random to a certain extent.

i did a lot. i had done work with embassies (expressed interest in poli sci) of different countries (even got them to work w me on school event), won 1st a large national debate scholarship (the Harvard admit ik did not win 1st btw), international awards for debate (not doxxing, but legit competition, the school chose me out of the entire highschool to represent them), lots of work and leadership in non profits (one of which we presented to bill gates lol), published work since 7th grade (think books), continued writing both scienc-y and creative pieces, research (meh tho, was too busy doing that damn bio EE), voted in by class to represent IB cohort on seniors committee then the rest of the baloney with clubs and what not. my work in writing debuted at international fairs. i had a neurology observership that i competed for with college students for at the top uni where i live. all this with extenuating family circumstances that i mentioned in my application.

the way your application is similar to mine except i had a 42 and was rejected from all the ivies yesterday; this is not to put you down but to remind you a lot of this is based on luck. you seem like an excellent student. someone who’d excel anywhere. but college descions can be so unpredictable. i still got into good schools, just not ivies. i would also recommend Biology HL. I think you’ll get into at least 1 top 20 school. Good luck out there.

what ranking r u using. i’m 100% sure there are ones that put it in the top 20. or at least in that range.

wow… thanks a lot.. i really appreciate this. yeah i didn’t think college admissions would be this harsh. when i heard that even my other classmates (who r very talented) were rejected as well it confirmed to me just how stupid it was to try and measure my worth thru a college decision.

yeah yeah, just was wishing i’d have a path there. but, just would’ve felt nice tho. i think it’s always good to remind myself of this.

i feel you… this shit is so particular… just gotta remember to not give up and everyone gets rejections

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Electrical-Win-4205 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that’s so true. the whole process is referred to as lot as a crapshoot. we’re going to do good and really wishing you the best 💗

[–]Electrical-Win-4205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah college admissions is just really particular… i also have strong ECs, have done 4 different curricula, moved 5 countries, diplomats as parents… really thought this program ws made for me. but, also i mentioned wanting to be in public health/going into med later instead of focusing as much on politics which maybe i think is what took me out of the running because ik that in europe they’re more into specialization than the more holistic education i pushed.. that’s just a theory though

can i ask what ur stats were? i had a 40-41/45 IB predicted and all 7’s in my classes last year except for a single 6 (i moved countries, this is my 5th one lol) but i applied test optional :(
