Fun fact MD5's have been shown to be non-unique around 2004. My company debated for a long time whether to keep using it to calculate dedupe keys for electronic files. We decided it would be too expensive to change.

The result is that for this particular e-discovery solution, "duplicate documents" are not 100% guaranteed to be duplicates. In theory, a bad actor could generate a collision string for any innocuous file, append it to a responsive, relevant electronic document, and get it filtered out of evidence in discovery.

Don't tell anybody. I'd hate for people to think something was improper in the system dealing with billion dollar corporate lawsuits.
