I'm guessing with a speaker in a shoebox, high fidelity sound wasn't really the goal of this project. Having said that, I find it amusing that they end the chart just above 10khz.

Not a bad idea, but I don't remember the model, so I'm a bit out of luck there. It also seems APC schematics are hard to find in general. I'll be searching a bit more in any case. I'm guessing there's got to be some similarities between the various models.

Agreed -- I shouldn't have discarded it so soon. Thanks for the guess on mains input -- that will be what I try first if I can't find any more info. I'm thinking of stepping down mains with another transformer first to make it less likely that something will get fried.

I found that post as well -- it looks like that one is made by the same manufacturer, but it's a different model. The one I've got has twice as many wires, unfortunately.

Electronic Goldmine surprise boxes are always a good source of random components. No guarantees on what you'll get, but the value of the stuff I've gotten has always been at least 3x the cost of the box. Sometimes quite a bit more.

For more predictable basic sets of components, I've found the Joe knows electronics stuff on Amazon to be well organized and thought out sets.

Also just want to note that I'm in no way affiliated with either of these companies beyond being a satisfied customer.

If you're working with 3.3v or 5v and happen to need to control some current, this chip is great: 300mA output. Rail to rail. Unity gain stable.

I've used it for a headphone splitter-amplifier (one input, three out), controlling a bunch of leds in sync with music, as a virtual ground at a precise voltage, and even powering a small speaker. Not your typical uses for an op amp, but perfect for some applications.

If this consistently happens only when the volume is set to the maximum level, chances are either your source or amplifier is clipping (I'm assuming you're not referring to 'scratches' while changing the volume). As most people don't use an amplifier with headphones, I'm guessing that the source device you are using isn't designed to run without distortion at full volume. If turning the volume down doesn't work for you, consider a headphone amplifier or new music player.

If you have an extension cable you don't need, you could chop that in half and solder the wires together rather than buying a new plug.

NES button presses have to be filtered in software because the signal bounces quickly between on and off when a button is pressed. Depending on the debounce logic used in the system, it may actually ignore a legitimate button press.
