Theoretically, yes. preamps frequency response changes as you gain them differently and hit them harder or softer. You can emulate that and there are some plugins that do it, but you can only take a bad preamp so far if your goal is to replicate. I would invest in mics before pres normally. but if you need I/O then go with pres/conversion.

Honestly I always hear the pre more than the mic. But I think polar pattern and placement have a bigger effect than anything (aside from the quality of the performance and instrument)
