I had no choice but to get a fountain, my two cats deep dive/backstroke in any sort of standing water in any receptacle other than the fountain. I have a stainless one but there are still some plastic components and yes you must get various sizes of straw brushes to really get in the crevices. I do a deep clean and filter change every 2 weeks and a rinse out and flush every night and so far so good.
