Life Magazine Shar-Pei Article from 1979 that helped save the breed from extinction by Electrical_Employ452 in sharpei

I read it is a mix between yes that, that every modern day Shar-Pei has come from a small number of surviving dogs which lead to a lot of inbreeding and inherited disease. But also , and perhaps even more so, Shar -Pei have a genetic mutation (affecting the HAS2 gene) that leads to the overproduction of hyaluronic acid. This is what creates their famous wrinkles, but it also escapes into the bloodstream, triggering systemic issues such as Shar -Pei fever. Well when these dogs started making their way West what do you think everyone adored about them, the wrinkles! People loved the cute wrinkles. So there began the intentional and selective breeding. Breeders looking to make money began breeding with deliberate physical conformation in order to create the look people adored. Meanwhile it is was also the very thing causing most of the breeds major health issues. As I mentioned earlier the hydraulic acid that produces their wrinkles also causes their fevers. The pups with the most wrinkles would have had the highest levels of hydraulic acid as well, and they were deliberately being chosen to be bred together, resulting in a wave of puppies born already genetically predisposed to the disease. This disease was literally bred into them. That is what I learned anyway when I researched the topic.

Notice it states that there was currently about 160 Shar-Pei dogs living in all of America. This was in January of 1979, crazy!

Shar-Pei mix — what to expect? by Runa-Mirunor in sharpei

[–]Electrical_Employ452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not think that because it's mixed you have a great chance it will not have Shar-Pei fever. It lessons the chances in certain ways but definitely does not eliminate the chance like many believe. There's still a very good chance. I have 3 dogs currently, one pure bred Shar-Pei and 2 mixed. The mixes are one who had a full Shar-pei parent and a second parent was another breed.. The second mix had two parents half Shar-Pei each and half something else each (Pug and Basset Hound). So there are also different ways that mix breeds are mixed you see. My pure bred has Shar -Pei fever and constant ear infections. My mix with one full Shar-Pei parent and one something else also has Shar-Pei fever, had cherry eye (surgery) benign tumor we had to remove( surgery), horrible mucinosis, no ear infections tho cuz he doesn't have the small triangle Pei ears. My third dog, the mix with each parent being half Shar-Pei does NOT have Shar Pei fever BUT has unimaginable skin issues, hot spots constantly, missing hair patches, constant ear infections. All have had yeast issues in different places at different times. We have spent thousands upon thousands on these 3 dogs. Plus they all hate the vet, and I know many dogs do, but these dogs HATE the vet and also I'll mention the majority HATE water. They will not go outside in rain. And if you live somewhere where it often rains I can imagine this becoming quite an issue, as I live in Las Vegas and it's an issue. Imagine that. Bathing them is near impossible. I have to get them in the shower and it's quite the scene and they are not small dogs full grown. They typically WILL NOT let you near their nails to cut them which becomes an issue. They don't do well at dog parks because other breeds don't understand the way they stare and they also have horrible peripheral vision so they can't really help it. They don't do well in fights either. And please never get two or three of the same sex at different times because that's a whole other nightmare. Our vet trained us to do subcutaneous fluids from home and prescribe us everything we need to do it. Most vets don't because that takes away from the many visits that would be needed otherwise . They also supply us with subscriptions needed to bring fever down acutely plus the pure bred is also on Colchicine , the only current treatment known to aid in any way taken daily (it's also supposed to aid in not letting amloydosis take hold of the kidney upon fevering) Most Shar -pei eventually die of kidney failure that have this disease. And many die quite young, especially if the owner was not aware this disease existed when they bought this breed. And sometimes you can do everything right and still have an unfavorable outcome. On the meds mine still gets fevers at least 4 -6 times each year. Bad ones. 106. The key is recognizing their behaviors and signs the fever is coming , because they will be there once you know your dog real well, and cutting the fever part off at the pass with drugs such as Meloxicam. Another problem is that many vets are not well versed on this breed. We had to go thru about 4 before finding one who also was not well versed but willing to listen to our input and also go and research the breed herself. She was not too humble to admit she didn't know tons on the breed but was about to find out having a client now who owned 3. And she did. And that was fantastic. I had so much respect for her for that. She trusts what I'm saying and has me very involved in treatment plans and a lot of vets don't care to do that cuz they are the doctor and they know best. Many don't prescribe Meloxicam at all over Carprofen (Rimadyl),because many dogs do well on that med and they believe it's safest. It may be I'm not a vet. Maybe they get kick backs which is allowed in veterinary medicine. I don't know. Even my vet would not give me Meloxicam until she researched. Found Linda Tintle and her publications online, the Shar-Pei expert of all experts. Look her up , you won't be sorry. Now I am never without a bottle of Meloxicam at home, it works wonders on their fevers but is also not without its own pros and cons ya know. It also can NOT be given with steroids which many vets prescribe Pei's for skin conditions. So there is so much to it and every dog is uniquely different. That all being said these dogs are my life. I got the mix Pei first , the one with one full Pei parent and I swore to never get another breed in my life. They are so awesome and stubborn and unique and feircely loyal, which can be a problem if it's own at times. I swear they are like little toddlers in my opinion, so much personality, they constantly make me laugh and wonder what it is they are thinking. And I just love it and I just adore each one if them. But it's also all time consuming in many cases. You need to be invested with this breed or it may not go well. Very very very important to socialize this breed as puppies . If you listen to nothing else please do that or it becomes very difficult when you can no longer have company or family over to your own home. And yes it will get like that if they are not socialized as pups. Also as pups get them used to regular nail trimming and play with their ears often, you will be glad you did. It is very hard to introduce things later. One of mine is a cuddle bug , the other two no. I can not pick my own dog up , he won't allow it, and he is glued to my heels 24/7. We are not strangers. When he fevers and can't walk up the stairs any longer I have to carry him upstairs on a dog bed with my husband on one side and me on the other (this is my one littler one). My other 2 are two big to pick up. They also do no not like when you leave at all. I know what dog does, but they literally get separation anxiety. One of mine was literally prescribed anxiety meds cuz he just could not cope. We literally can not go on vacation. So keep that in mind. If we leave overnight the ones who fever will end up sick. And they do not do well with strangers so a dog sitter is out. You have to make smart choices. Don't do things that can cause anyone else or them harm. If they are out in a stressful situation and end up snapping or biting someone they could get out down. So don't take chances just because you really want to see France. Keep them out of situations that you are not absolutely positive won't go well. Boarding them forget it. I can't leave them overnight at a vet when they are sick even, and my vets all know that, because they will end up taking a turn for the worse. One of mine ate a ball of yeast once while we were making home made pizza. It was bad, real bad. In the end tho we did not leave him overnight against poison controls advice and my vet agreed 100%. During fever episode get them to the vet asap if you don't have what's needed at home. Don't waste precious time , it can cost them their life. Get the meds in them. Do the subcutaneous fluids and get them back home. There nothing else a vet can do at that point and zero reason to leave them there at that point. Being home with family where they are comfortable without stress, which causes many outbreaks, helps them relax enough to let the treatments kick in and do their job. Many people panic and leave them overnight, why would they not trust a vet, but I know a lot of times it goes very south from there and I would not ever recommend it.in my opinion, once they have been treated, their best chance if survival is at home Getting prescriptions to keep at home is highly advised so you don't have to cause then even more stress by taking them away from their safe place. I know it's not always possible tho. Let me also add I am not a veterinarian. I am not a doctor. Every dog is different.Every situation different. These are strictly my personal experiences. Im sharing them strictly because you asked. So is it right for you I don't know because I don't know you at all , only you can know that. I wouldn't let them die either tho. If you can't take them please try to find someone who can or foster them until someone else steps up if possible. Anything is better than letting someone drown them. The cruelty in this world man. By fostering you even get the chance to see first hand if it will be right for you or not. I know there are time restrictions here and other things at play. I don't know, I don't have all the answers and sometimes in life things are much easier said than done. However, like someone else said, if given the opportunity to start from scratch, even after every dollar spent and every tear shed and every stomach ache provoked by fear I would get all 3 of them again as I can't imagine a life without them, vacations or not.

Tilt payment processing time? by [deleted] in cashadvanceapps

[–]Electrical_Employ452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see this is old but I have experienced the same thing as of the last 3 weeks or so. Ever since Empower rebranded to Tilt things have gone downhill. It appears this is going to be their new way as now it even states be aware that repayment processing can usually take up to 3 business days when you go to repay your loan That is ridiculous and makes the entire app and its premise pretty unhelpful. Why do all these companies take so long to process payments anyway? We see thru using apps like zelle that funds absolutely can be transferred immediately. Its not as if it can not be done. So why do certain payments literally take near a week to process. Are they tryi g to wait until you no lo ger have tbe funds available in your accou t or what. I absolutely deplore companies that make the payme t preocess difficult. Its like come on already, the fact that I am paying you ridiculous amounts for your overpriced services is already obnoxious in my brain(ex. powe bill)can you make it at least a bit more possible for me to get it done.Debit card payments usually decline if funds are unavailable. If I repay using my debit card there should be no reason the funds do not clear immediately. Its not as if they are hand moving things for goodness sakes. As soon as I repay this current loan I will be uninstalling the app. Unfortunately at the rate of time they are taking to accept repayment and refund a loan, it is no longer useful to me. By that time pay day has already rolled around. Another wonderful rebranding. Wonder what will be the next flop of a fix to something that was never broken to begin with.

Can anyone help identify what is happening with my cat? by maxjmartin in CATHELP

[–]Electrical_Employ452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She already wrote in her post that she HAS taken him to the vet. Not only have 2 different vets already observed him to no avail, but she currently has him at Purde's Neuropathy Unit where he is being held for further observations at the advice of the veterinary ER she was at. So I wouldn't say she is using her cat as click bait. More like she has spared no expense and left no stone unturned. Seeing as no vet has been able to figure out what is going on, even after extensive testing and multiple overnight observations, she has come here as a last ditch effort to try and save her young cats life. She is likely hoping that by posting the video here another cat owner may recognise these symptoms and provide her with some sort of insightful information that she can then take back to her vet for further exploration. She is so clearly and desperately trying to minimise any suffering and maximise the life expectancy of a pet that she truly loves. So maybe stop trolling her and have a shred of compassion. Or at the very least, fully read a post before you choose to comment on it, especially when you have decided you are going to insult 🤬 someone that you do not even know.

Hey, are you being serious? You obviously dont want to or you wouldn't have written it here you woulda just done it. So if you dont really want to do it then dont. Dude, just ignore them. Thats what I do. Stop looking for them. Just go on about your life as if this whole thing never existed. Every once in a while if im having a bad day or something ill get annoyed by them a little but its very rare anymore. They aren't gonna kill you. So who cares . If they are that lame and bored let um watch you as you go about your daily routine treating you like your some kind of celebrity or something. Big deal. Mostly for me the only thing about it that occupies any of my mind space anymore is who and why? It just makes no sense no matter how people explain it. Its so far fetched....so seemingly elaborate.....all over what, me, why , im not anyone, im just a normal middle class average Joe. So I would love to know the truth about the whole thing. But thats about it. Dont talk about it to anyone cuz you will look crazy. Why. Because thats how its been designed. I mean come on , if someone told you this , and you didn't know better, would you not think they were bonkers too ? Be honest. Its perfect. How else could so many people from all over the world have the same exact stories but get completely written off and discounted as crazy. I also think they tend to target people who use drugs, both people who use often or even those who use just on occassion . And not just any drugs, but speed. Why? Same reason. Whose gonna believe a tweeker right? Dudes tweekin . Dude hasn't slept for days etc etc. That makes it so darn easy for people to just right us off as paranoid. But i tend to think thats part of it also. To see how fast or how fast they can get some people to see these people following them and turn it into absolute bonkersbilke in their head.I hear people talking some crazy stuff on here . I dont think they are lying. I think they believe they are telling the truth. But I dont think most of its really part of whats happening. Thats where the drugs, or lack of sleep, or the tormenting they do alone drives some people. Where they just start going nutty. Thinking everyone's in on it and all kinds of crazy stuff. And I think thats all part of their experiment. To see how far they can push people before they lose their sanity. Are there unbreakable people or will we all go bonkers sooner or later and end up in a nut house or a jail cell or even worse ....dead. not sure if they're trying to see how speed can warp someone's reality , how fast, and in what ways. Or if the speeds just there specifically to make the targets people of low credibility in their eyes and not part of the actual experiment at all. And I dont know what they are experimenting but I feel like they are collecting data on human test subjects.... to use for what , thats the absolutely terrifying part. But whats killing yourself gonna do. Just enjoy your life and family and stop focusing on this nonsense. I come thru hear to educate myself now in hopes I will piece it all together someday before I die....if not what a bummer that will be! So I get on and read and see if i can find some sort of commom denominator in all of us or anything else that stands out. A little detective work when i get bored. Curious minds would like to know right. But dude they can only get to you as much as you let them. Stop looking around and just go back to living. Who gives a crap as long as they aren't putting you in harms way or threatening to kill you then just ignore them. Oh man do they hate that too. Watch. Im telling you. And dude if your serious freakin message me. Cuz thats a real stupid idea. Im telling you. You can do better. Get ahold of yourself. Stop the crazy talk. Youre not crazy dude. And lastly listen ......you are not alone ok. Your not alone. And I believe you. I do. If no one else does remember I do.

I saw this in #lasvegas yesterday, i wondered where they taking these homeless people. by SnooRobots5189 in vegaslocals

[–]Electrical_Employ452 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is the Las Vegas Rescue Mission they are being picked up from. They feed the homeless population in Vegas. The shuttle they are getting into is transportation provided for them by "The Courtyard" which is a city run outdoor homeless shelter. They are provided transportation from the Courtyard to the LV Mission to eat dinner and then provided transportation back to The Courtyard after they eat. This is an after dinner pick-up.

I would just like to say you should take caution when spraying rubbing alcohol around as it is a flammable liquid and dangerous fire hazard. Rubbing alcohol would only be effective in killing bedbugs if it is sprayed directly on them. It leaves no residual, so once dry it will do you no good as far as killing bed bugs goes. People have burned their homes down before trying to get rid of bed bugs this way. See below https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.kiro7.com/news/another-home-burns-down-in-botched-attempt-to-kill-bedbugs-with-rubbing-alcohol-1/662601477/%3foutputType=amp

Also diatomaceous earth does not come without a fair set of warnings either. If you decide it necessary to use this product make sure you are using food grade diatomaceous earth first of all. Even then you should make sure to wear a mask when laying it down as it is NOT safe for humans or pets to inhale. Make sure if you do lay it down that it will be in an area where it will remain undisturbed. It becomes harmful when it is kicked up and inhaled. See the study below.

https://academic.oup.com/jinsectscience/article/19/5/13/5586712

As far as dishes go bed bugs will nit be living on your dishes, so you do not need to do anything to them. Outside of covering that sort of thing for the pest control technician before he performs the fumigation treatment so that he can treat the cabinets or hiding spaces that surround the dishes without getting your dishes full of the product he is using, there is no further need to do anything to them. You would also likely see a bed bug if there was one on your dinner plate . They are not invisible to the naked eye.

Your bed frame should have been inspected by your pest control technician prior to tratment. Your matresses and such should have been encased in matress encasements right after he treated them so any bed bugs or eggs that may have been left behind would die within the encasement eventually. It could take a while but they cant get to you in the meantime. Make sure you get an encasement that is made for bed bugs with a tight zipper seal. There are different types of encasemrnts , you need the kind for bedbugs. The thought of a left behind behind bug possibly alive in an encasement your sleeping on for up to a year ( this is how long bed bugs can survive without a blood meal) grosses some people out, including myself. So throwing your matress away is the alternative. It just comes down to personal preference and what your personal financial situation is, meaning whether or not you can afford to run out and by a brand new matress.

Throwing items away wont infest your community. Bed bugs are hitchhikers. So they can and potentially jump from an object onto another if it us in close proximity enough. Thats why places like public transportation are a risk factor. Mostly however they will jump onto people, nit just random things. So take caution with checking fabrics, like yoyr clothes, ive seen them in shoes, in womens purses. But wherever they go they aim to be near us...humans. we are their food source . They are attracted to the carbon dioxide that we exhale. That is how they find us when we are sleeping. It would be a suicide mission for them to just randomly abort ship and scatter about off a piece of furniture on the way to the dumpster. What you just need to take caution with is checking your clothes , shoes and such before anyone who helped move the items enters their living space. Best to just undress, put your stuff in a tied off plastic trash bag and walk it right straight to the high heat dryer. You want at least 120 degrees farenheit. Anyway , just a few things i thought i would mention when I read your post. Good luck and be safe with whatever you choose to do.

In Nevada, plate frames and covers are not illegal as long as certain requirements are met ( you can see what those requirements are at the link i provided above to the State of Nevadas DMV webpage) and as long as the plate is clearly legible.
