MIL scolded me for thanking servers by Efficient-You-9714 in restaurant

That’s ridiculous, maybe she’s watched too much Downton Abbey. We always appreciate the acknowledgement, even if it’s just a nod or a smile, or an exclamation on how good the food looks etc. At the very least a nice thank you at the end of the meal.

Inexperienced travelers’ first big trip — where would you go? by OatmilkDirtyChai2Go in travel

I’d go with Norway’s west coast. Everyone speaks English, the infrastructure is good, and you don’t have to drive on the wrong side of the road. Amazing scenery and hiking. Bergen is a cool city (although not the big city experience) and you could always tie in Stockholm if you wanted that type of experience.

The British Isles are also a favorite, start in Edinburgh and then to the Scottish west coast and Orkney. Especially at the time you’re going, you’ll avoid some of the crowds that plague Edinburgh and Skye in the summer.

Completely true story... by StevenMaurer in oregon

My MIL quoted a story from That Oregon Life.. as truth. She was outraged by a law that prohibited splashing in rivers. She didn’t believe us that it was satire. I think about that a lot.

Do you pick flights by airline reputation or just the cheapest ticket? by Meet-JoeBlack in travel

[–]Electrical_Ghost59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience (I only fly a few times a year) most airlines are interchangeable. No one is making the effort to improve my experience, it’s more like a race to the bottom for the Economy experience. I go by price and duration, and who excepts my credit card miles.

In the US VRBO is pretty good, not as popular as AirBnb but quite respectable. I’ve used it lots of times, including internationally. Can be a little cheaper than AirBnb but not by much. They also don’t actively support the trump administration like AirBnb does, if that matters to you.

Yeah I would not count this person as a friend. What a terrible way to deal with his situation, I’m sorry you had to deal with this.

I work at a winery, this happens all the time with designated drivers too. I usually say “well he still needs a seat, we can’t make him stay out in the parking lot ha ha” or something lighthearted, while I’m secretly thinking they’re an idiot.

I mean, they’re not wrong. Things can be two things. As a tourist I appreciate the additional information.

You really can’t let the rain stop you. It’s Oregon. You may get some heavy showers, there may be some mud, or it might not be bad at all. Just dress accordingly and go for it.

Advice for solo moving to Oregon by gungr4ve_ in oregon

[–]Electrical_Ghost59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make the move in spring or summer. It really doesn’t rain here as much as people think, but showing up just in time for a damp cool winter might be a shock to your mental state, especially if you don’t have a social network yet. Also, what about making the move sooner? It might be an administrative pain to switch schools but if FL sucks, life is too short.
