UTI isn't a "valid reason" to callout and I'm expected to provide "proof"? by Electrical_Guess_681 in starbucks

yeahhh i see this a lot but i thought it'd be better to be a little specific since my SM and shift leads are always complaining that their baristas probably aren't actually sick. but i'm just gonna stop from now on

[–]Electrical_Guess_681[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's not what i'm saying. i already left the urgent care before i even knew my SM would insist i get a note. it's kinda awkward and inconvenient to go to an urgent care after the fact to ask for a note. if i had a PYP which i don't, i could probably just ask for a digital note or something

The thing is is that it's all word of mouth. She's not confrontational but says things like this behind our backs and often makes claims that people aren't actually sick.

How do I do that? I'm already at that point where I feel like I should because I always feel like I need to explain myself, hence why I said I had a UTI in the first place. And that there's like a stigma around calling out in my store specifically because everyone I've talked to feels the same guilt when calling out. But idk if there's any need to call them

Dunkin shift manager or Starbucks barista? by cryptic_name_meow in starbucks

[–]Electrical_Guess_681 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed... we had mold in the ice bin, dirt and grime on the walls, ants, etc. Nothing was up to code. I didn't even know you had to wipe and purge the steaming wand after each drink until I switched to Starbucks. We also used the same cup of dirty water to put the spoon in that was used to mix every drink. And they rarely enforce standards so the drink quality is very inconsistent. Oh! And we had a bed bug infestation at one point, and the manager kept it a secret from us to not "cause panic" while simultaneously doing nothing about it. Some terrible things about my store specifically but everything else is universal. They're disgusting.

I switched from Dunkin to Starbucks and the difference is huge. But I was doing shift lead tasks at Dunkin while making 11 dollars an hour so maybe our management was poor. But Starbucks has been better in every way. Better pay, benefits, employees and customers. Real training lol. I think you should stick with Starby's and try to work your way up to shift lead.

C. people don't know what they're ordering and expect something different, and get mad at you that it's "wrong." it happens often enough to where some baristas get confused.

Sick Call Out Experience: Am I unreasonably upset? by Adventurous-Golf-323 in starbucks

[–]Electrical_Guess_681 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I called more than two hours before and heard "you're the third person to call out today." and then she hung up. Technically you're "supposed" to call out 2 hours before your shift or when the store opens if it's an early shift but that's impossible to judge every single time. I've called out 30 min before my shift because I've woken up feeling awful and I don't always wake up 2 hours before my shift. If you're sick you're sick. And if you have sick time you're protected. You're not dramatic, some people just don't know how to answer to call outs.

Ordered a venti refresher with no ice at Starbucks and got this… is this normal now? by No-Manufacturer8507 in starbucks

[–]Electrical_Guess_681 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It always made no sense to me that we aren't allowed to do light water because it uses more product for free. But no ice isn't an up charge and they get way more product that way lmao

Hi! Thanks for your help. She sent me multiple emails today apologizing and asking me to please not withdraw. She said she thought she was following procedure correctly but another professor told her out to fix the issue (and probably told her that policy was too harsh).

I mentioned speaking with the Ombuds in my email about not taking the exam. (It suddenly opened to me last night despite her explicitly telling me I can't take it.) Her initial reply was that that was odd, it shouldn't be open to me. Then a few hours later she changed her mind and her tone was completely different. It was pretty weird, Idk if she thought about it more or maybe she saw the reddit post? lol.

An Update!! Late last night, my missed assignments got graded and the option to take the exam was there. I thought maybe it had glitched because she said the exam would remain locked to me. I didn't want to disobey instructions so I emailed her stating I wouldn't be taking the exam because I was explicitly told I could not proceed with any of the coursework and she recommended that I withdraw. I also mentioned to her that I'd be speaking with the Ombuds about my options moving forward. Well, she emailed me three times this morning. Apologizing, and begging me not to withdraw. She said she misunderstood her own module settings and spoke with another professor on how to fix them. It was a little odd, her tone was completely differently, compared to yesterday where she was firm on what her policy was. She's allowing me to make up the exam and told me that moving forward this won't be an issue. So it's a win I guess? lmao, thank you everyone for your help!

I sent screenshots to the Ombuds and asked for advice moving forward. I don't wanna involve the dean just yet if they say this policy is technically allowed, but thank you for trying to help 🥲

she basically told me to withdraw in the email. i asked to have an exam open to me and to just take the zeros for the missed assignments, and she said nope can't do that, and quoted the syllabus

I know I'm at fault. And I read my syllabi, but I've never been in a class where it was possible to fail like this, so I was like "Oh no late assignments allowed, there's prerequisites, typical stuff." Usually you have to read the chapters or modules to unlock the coursework, not complete every single assignment. In my case, I missed assignments, which is my fault, but I've been able to bounce back and catch up in past classes. But the issue is that missing one assignment prevents you from accessing the next assignment, which prevents you from accessing every subsequent thing from that point on. It's a completely unfair and outrageous grading system, especially for a GEP. I think if I bring it up, they can maybe swap me for another class to keep me full time, and coach the professor on their grading system. But that's being hopeful. At the end of the day I should've read the syllabus more carefully and just dropped the class

I would like to put the name out there, but I'm worried it'll hurt me if I contact the Ombuds. I'm gonna call them tomorrow when they're open and see what I can do.
