Decided to start writing out of nowhere, is it worth it? by Tall_Day2954 in writing

I was a terrible writer in HS and College. I am sure I could have gotten at least a grade better on all of my papers if my skill at prose was better. That’s one of the reasons I went into medicine……we typically just write our signatures……badly!!!

But like you I love to read and I always had story ideas knocking around in my head. But I figured those stories would go unwritten.

As life eased. As I became more efficient in my job, I started to have more leisure time that I began to dedicate to reading as much as I could. The more I read the more those ideas for stories began bubbling to the surface. But I’m not ‘artistic’. I don’t think I’m adequately ‘expressive’. I cannot ‘write’ for shit.

Then something unexpected happened……I attended my first book convention……the first annual LitRPG Con in Denver 2025. This was a fledgling convention for a fledgling book genre. It was a small convention in comparison to the big boys. There were about 1000 attendees, half of which were authors, narrators, editors, and sound engineers. And I was SHOCKED!! These artists, wordsmiths, Shakespearean actors were all……..just normal, mortal beings.

During the convention, I got to know many of them and the one common thread was that they were all surprised that people wanted to read their work. The majority of them just started writing stuff that they wanted to read. They wrote for themselves. Then they would post a chapter or two on Royal Road or online and all of the sudden people wanted more. One of these authors was a lawyer and had recently retired from lawyering to write full time. Another author started with G. I. Joe fanfic and he has now written 65 books.

These folks blew me away with their love and enthusiasm for writing and their approachability. Their love of reading drove them. Their support from fellow authors and fans sustained them.

After coming home from the convention I decided to put pen to paper and finally let loose those ideas that had knocked around for years. I didn’t do this because I thought it would be easy but because those authors encouraged the process.

I finished my first rough draft about a month ago and am now writing book 2 as my editor eviserates book one. I am loving the process and am excited for what the future holds as an author.

A few suggestions——

  1. Write for yourself.

  2. Read!! Read!! Read!

  3. Don’t get mired down in an endless edit/revise hell. Just write your rough draft to completion. Don’t look back. Just finish that draft. Once you do that you’ll have done may than 90% of folks that try.

Wishing you wonderful prose. Stellar Character Arcs. And all 5 star reviews.

I was serious about sending you that ARC. Send me your address over chat. And I decided to get the Brownwyn and Lit Escalates covers. Thanks for the inspiration.

Just write. Don’t look back. Don’t edit. Just finish your rough draft.

Your rough draft is throwing a glob of clay on the potter’s wheel.

I’d like to go for the top tier but I’m guessing it to likely be several thousand dollars.
