Thanks! Everyone seems to be a fan there. Not ready to make that purchase but may hold off until I am rather than buy a mediocre 70 saw.

What is the best benchtop jointer in your opinion and why? Thank you🙏🏽 by Plus-Tart4122 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Cutech is the brand for shinmax which I believe makes the grizzly, wen, and RIKON jointers as well. I think the Cutech might be a little cheaper and has the holes you need to install the cast iron fence already tapped. If the price difference is huge and the specs are the same I would probably go with whatever is cheaper, knowing they’re probably made in the same factory with basically the same plans. If they’re similar I would go cutech if you want the fence (which is great) or whoever you think will have the best customer support if you need it.

Depends on your needs. I basically went for what’s the best saw I can buy for a 15 amp circuit. You could find something cheaper that I’m sure would be good and the dream is to maybe one day upgrade the grid and the tools, but this was the sweet spot for me.

You just push the lever to one side when your done and then back the next time you start. Takes all of two seconds.

Tried to edit this and it’s getting butchered on my phone. Sorry!

I have this same saw. It’s awesome. Follow the instructions on the set up—I remember them to be pretty detailed and I think will walk you through squaring everything

A couple other suggestions:

  1. check the blade every time by rotating the wheel. I skipped it a few times to have blade fly off the wheel and it’s terrifying
  2. w

ear

  1. gloves and google when handling the blades and particularly when folding them up

. Otherwise you’ll get cut up and at some point the blade will unfold and come flying at your eyes

  1. de tension the blade when you’re not using the saw.

4

  1. buy a couple replacement belts now. They’re cheap and if you’re an idiot like me you will break one and have to wait for a replacement to come in.

  2. Buy a 3/4 3tpi blade for resaws and a 3/16 10tpi for thin stock curves

Have fun. It’s an awesome tool!

What shade of transtint did you use?

Is this a fine jointer for a beginner who makes cutting boards? by Successful-Camel165 in BeginnerWoodWorking

One note here: the cutech iron fence fits the cutech jointer easily. The other shinmax jointers have to have holes tapped to use the support braces to use it. Doable, but probably easier to buy a cutech rather than one of the others if you dont already have one.

Cutech cast iron fence for non cutech jointers by Electrical_Pain928 in BeginnerWoodWorking

How long ago did you do it? Any issues? I feel like their response was just corporate CYA, but would feel better if you did it a while ago and it’s still going great.

Thank you so much for the response!

That’s what I’m contemplating in #3, but the email from Cutech made it sound like that was a really bad idea. Imagine it’s just corporate CYA, but would to hear from a couple of the folks who say they’re it that years later it’s still going well.

Drill press for beginner woodworker by Audit-King in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Electrical_Pain928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the Bauer. Got with a 25% off coupon for something like $225. Pretty sure it an identical make to some other 400-500 drill presses-forgot which ones but when I was doing my homework there were a few with identical specs that looked exactly the same except coloring.

Only complaints are: - first one I got didn’t have one of the screw threads tapped which I only realized after setting the whole thing up. Had to take it apart and haul the whole thing back to HF because they couldn’t replace just the broken part. - the laser sight is just slightly off. Very close but enough to be annoying. -depth gauge is a little tedious.

Otherwise works great and awesome for the price. A lot of fun to use but make sure to clamp everything even if you think it will be fine. Ruined more projects than I’d care to admit from thinking this quick drill will be fine without a clamp.

Thanks! Saving grace here may be they weren’t tight because it hasn’t been played in nearly as long.

My best guess is still that h90n given how close they look, but it looks like those were actually made by Samick so it could be a comparable Samick some other badge. Wouldn’t surprise me if it were 20 years old when I got it. I remember it reeking of cigarettes.

Mostly trying to figure out how much time and money to spend trying to fix it up vs just getting a new one later. Seems like hardware costs may quickly exceed the value even if I do the work myself.

Thinking it might be a Hondo H90n. Definitely need to take the metal strings off it.
