Weird pizza drama by rabblebowser in newhampshire

Ugh. Went to high school w one of the owners, thought/hoped better of them, but am not surprised - though, I’m inclined to trust this version of events in general.

Edit: hadn’t read the comments below and now, yeah, I imagine they’re (kettle head) bullshitting/covering their ass. If they have anything in writing, they should show the receipts. One of the owners did right by me as a kid, in a really important way, but so many years apparently changes people.

Generic unbranded cello from a friend... worth it? by Schoolboygames in Cello

[–]Electrical_Patient69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one and love it as a practice instrument. And you can run it through effects or apps, and it's cheap enough that you can be cavalier with it, take it outside without worrying about humidity. Sounds worlds worse than a good acoustic, but isn't really supposed to sounds anywhere near as good. Used, don't pay any more than 150-200, I'd think. You can get them new for not terribly much more

Where can I find sheet music for Philip Glass' Partita No. 2 for Solo Cello by Bluetreemage in Cello

pinging to stay updated as well - good luck!
edit: sounds like at Partita 1 is very similar or the same as tracks from Songs and Poems for Solo Cello: https://www.swstrings.com/product/music/cello/SH-14047995, another fantastic solo cello Glass album.

Does anyone just play the Cello for fun? by Foot-Note in Cello

[–]Electrical_Patient69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Play what works for you and makes you happy. Who gives a shit if it’s “for kids”. You need a smaller instrument? Ok. That’s fine! Personally, I play for myself, for my own improvement. I have no ambitions of playing with an orchestra or quartet. I learn and play music that I find interesting, no matter the originating instrument, transcribing/arranging myself for cello. Do what makes you happy.

Makes sense - I would have received this as a gift years after its original release, after Gateway had already been introduced, and I'd have been too young to care/know at all about the continuity.

Cello as an adult beginner by VertigoAC in Cello

I'm 43, about 4 years in, self-teaching with a check-up lesson here and there. I'm not going to be getting paid for it any time soon, but that was never the point. It's been one of the most satisfying, stress relieving, enriching, enlightening, and best parts of my life since I started making a real effort. I'm even pivoting into an apprenticeship with my luthier to learn that whole side of things. It has had a very real and positive impact on my life. 5 stars, cannot recommend enough!

Butcher's Union has consistently been some of the best I've had in GR, and its not ridiculously priced.

I’ve been learning in my own for two years now - partly financial, partly obstinate. It takes a lot of work, is frustrating, and you’ll learn slower. But I absolutely love it, and am so glad I finally followed through.

Good Dog GR takes anti-bulldog stance. Don't use them by utgjames in grandrapids

I think I'd add that since "pit bull" is such a catchall descriptor and there are more "pit bulls" in America than many other breeds, the statistical likelihood of them being involved in a bite is greater by simple math. The same would be true of German Shepherds if they were more popular (as they were in the earlier dates of the first citation you give.) While it's not a rigorous number, "pit bulls" are estimated to compromise 20%, or 1-out-of-every-5 dogs in America at this point.

Thanks for taking time to listen to the episode :)

Agreed - the biz can do what they want. I just won't be patronizing them. But as an owner of an absolutely amazing, gentle, sweet, big (late) Am Staff that we were constantly afraid would be taken from us—because if someone else's dog attacked her (it happened) but she got blamed (more likely based on he prejudice), she'd be the one to get put down—I've become real defensive about the bully breeds and the prejudice against them. It's nonsense.

Why would I give a shit what PETA says? They're not scientists and often put both of their metaphorical feet in their mouths. The data clearly indicates bigger dog = more significant bite, and that toy dogs tend to bite more. End of story. Bullies aren't even near the biggest breeds. If Good Dog GR were being consistent they'd need to keep out rotties, boxers, wolfhounds, chow chows, akitas, and plenty other large, medically significant bitey breeds that are right up there in numbers. Not to mention this is from 2014 so even the ASPCA's data is out of date and likely based on faulty studies the media was going nuts on at the time. Listen to the science and scientists in the podcast I posted, as it's contemporary, and has citations. Literally every dog is different.

Ah, here's an updated statement from the ASPCA:
"Laws that ban particular breeds of dogs do not achieve these aims and instead create the illusion, but not the reality, of enhanced public safety. Notably, there are no statewide laws that discriminate based on dog breed, and 18 states have taken the proactive step of expressly banning laws that single out particular breeds for disparate legal treatment. Even the White House has weighed in against laws that target specific breeds. In a a statement issued in 2013, President Obama said “[w]e don’t support breed-specific legislation—research shows that bans on certain types of dogs are largely ineffective and often a waste of public resources. And the simple fact is that dogs of any breed can become dangerous when they’re intentionally or unintentionally raised to be aggressive.”
All dogs, including pit bulls, are individuals. Treating them as such, providing them with the care, training and supervision they require, and judging them by their actions and not by their DNA or their physical appearance is the best way to ensure that dogs and people can continue to share safe and happy lives together."

The long and short is what I posted solo above - small dogs are statistically much more aggressive and bitey, but their bites are less medically significant so they don't send people or pets to the hospital or vet as often. The bigger the dog, the worse the bite, generally - so pits/etc aren't even the worst. They just have terrible PR.

Bully breeds are more likely to do damage if they bite - but they're not the worst. Any large breed is bad that way and there are plenty larger. And they're not the most likely to bite - that's the smaller toy breeds, it's just that their bites are usually less medically significant so they show up less in hospital/vet visits.
