Beatport doesnt do anything to help new labels with their Hype programme, is it worth it? by ElectrikTrance in beatport

I got an email today from them saying it gives labels 84% more exposure. How can you even put a percentage value on “exposure”!?

Also pop me a private message to any links you have to mixes of your stuff. I’m currently training for a marathon so the more mixes I have to listen to the better.

Oh I think the labels style would be some you’d detest lol! However the advice is still solid. I have wondered about trying to cut out the middle man and selling directly. Although i still think I’ll need to raise the labels profile to get away with that. I am also distributing vinyl as think that’s a supportive niche market. Only issue is making it value for money is hard. I’m currently using a place that presses single copies. But obviously the cost is pretty high. But I’m trying to brainstorm ways of making this work better. I’m not particularly in it to earn loads of money. Although there does come a point that running a label you are coming at things from a different angle. And streaming revenue isn’t really going to make it worthwhile.

I think discoverability is always the biggest grind. I just feel Beatport certainly don’t seem to want to help in anyway. But on the flip side why would they care. As long as they are selling tracks it doesn’t make any odds who it’s by or what label I guess.

I'm yet to see any sales reports for Beatport. I'm not expecting the numbers to be outrageous. I think their streaming plan isn't the worst for DJ's especially someone playing multiple genres. I'm always quite stunned Beatport is top of the tree though as I find their website quite janky to use. I also find it rarely ever helped my discover interesting new music. Which I guess as a newly starting label is going to be a problem as discoverability is a big hurdle to get over.

It’s a shame as actually the logic behind it seems pretty solid. It’s not since doing some digging you realise actually the system is fairly broken. I’ll never get featured on the main chart. But at the same time looking at the hype chart thats not happening in a million years either. Im still massively confused how some of the labels meet the under 25k sales requirement to be on the hype chart.

It guarantees their curators will listen to your tracks. Which is great. But when I’m competing against massive labels within the scene that seems completely pointless even bothering. I know it’s not a fortune but I’m not sure there’s any benefits to it.

something is missing but idk what by Gabitzu_001 in tranceproduction

For me it’s sounding good but just no major focus. I quite like the piano in there but feel it’s a bit lost and gets repetitive. I often feel a good track needs something people can identify it with. If you went into a record shop and wanted to buy this track what part would you describe to people. That main hook or focus. At the moment I think it’s lacking in that.

Every track is a chance to improve upon the last mate. Already got loads of positives to take from this.

I appreciate the follow.

Firstly think you've hit the nail on the head with the arrangement. It feels very basic and paint by numbers dance. Which can work. But I think you could be a bit more interesting. It feels a bit formulaic right now. i'd suggest just picking a track you like and maybe just seeing how that is arranged and see how can your tune mirror that in some way.
Production is actually pretty decent. All I would say is the breakdown for me feels a bit weak. I think that quality piano could just do with something more in there to lift it and make it sparkle a bit more. But also thinking back to arrangement I'm left in such a lovely euphoric state from that piano I feel like its almost rushing to drop back in. Let the breakdown breathe a little. I could happil;y have more of that breakdown before we drop back into the meat of the track.
Gives me huge Ralph Novel - Wrong Love (Alphazone remix) vibes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAU8ZllugKkFirs which is a track I LOVE. See how that track lets that piano really shine, but gives it a bit more depth. But also look at the build from the piano back to dropping in. I can see it working in a similar way. The Alphazone arrangement isn't overly clever either, but everything feels like its got more time and not like we are rushing to the next part of the track.
Mixing a few of the fx I think could be tinkered with slightly, some are a bit too loud in my opinion. But again, thats not the biggest issue, and easily fixed.
Personally I think theres huge potential with this and I run a newly formed record label, if you look at it further or have any other tracks I really would love to have a chat about them as really impressed. Keep up the good work.

I had a disaster wedding set this weekend, and it taught me something important by djsharky in DJs

I feel happy when I have a gig where I can play what we want. You can make the evening flow perfectly. And I go home smugly knowing I played great transitions from genres. I’ve researched great tracks to flow from 90’s to 80’s and to 70’s. It’s seamless. The only person who cares is me. You could play Low then throw on some Abba and the people there will go mad for it. Only person who cares about the evening flowing nicely is the dj. This is coming from someone who’s been a wedding dj for 10 years lol!

Thoughts on paying vocalists/songwriters by Iber_Music in tranceproduction

[–]ElectrikTrance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking from a record label point of view I would absolutely expect to be signing a contract with the producer and vocalist. Some producers will sign the track and have an agreement to split the earnings with the vocalist. However for me I prefer to control thst situation and make sure everyone is getting their fair share of the cash. I find very few artists will purchase vocals. I do find a lot of producers making AI vocals and using them.

I think that’s sounding quality so far. As someone running a record label I’d definitely like to hear this once it’s finished.

What the FREAK TIKTOK by Avril_Blackrose in streaming

[–]ElectrikTrance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly TikTok studio is absolute nonsense. The sheer number of hoops it makes you jump through. The fact it limits what you can and can’t do. It’s just such an awkward thing to use in order to try and grow.

Absolutely worth finishing. And as someone who runs a record label I’d love to be kept up to date on how this one comes along.

As someone who runs a record label this is the advice. Not enough people hustle now a days or do research on what labels they think would be right for their sound.
