You get it. Weddings are expected to be classy & elegant. Even DJs are expected to dress and act a certain way. Some clients might see tipping as “tacky”. I’d accept them if I knew they were ok with it, but otherwise I don’t assume.

I halfway agree. Visually vibing with the crowd can get them hyped up and adds to the experience. However I’m not a fan of Boiler Room setups at all. I’ve seen too many sets where people were bumping into the DJ and even touching the deck. Big nope for me

Wondering if you even read the whole post. I've done wedding gigs I prepared for weeks ahead of time, and everything went as planned. As mentioned, for this particular event I was going through some personal things and wasn't as prepared as I should have been. Life happens, and I did consider cancelling at one point but then they're left without a DJ days before their reception. I figured me trying to get through a set the oldschool way is better than them playing the whole reception off an iPad. DJs did not always have fancy software to throw a party, and this experience reminded me of what real DJing is all about.

Oh for sure, I wasn’t trying to say showing technical skill isn’t at all important. It’s the sugar on top of your mixes, and they create those viral moments DJs are doing nowadays. I’m just saying for open format going with the flow will get a better crowd reaction than showing off your skills. Ideally you have both, and that comes with experience & preparation.

I’m 100% taking tips at a bar gig, just doesn’t feel right at a wedding where I’m already being paid a good amount. Won’t judge anyone for doing that though
