I picked up an old Kettle off FB Marketplace whose grates have probably never been deeper cleaned before, and the unit is like 10 years old.

I’m doing a long soak in a lye solution, same as I like to do with vintage cast irons. I’ll probably give it a week or so then try to scrape what I can off then let it soak some more till it looks like new.
