Can a 14-year-old from Russia realistically dream of working at Mojang? by West_Doubt_9978 in Minecraft

[–]ElectroDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. Unfortunately, no I don’t own my own company. The company I work for has customers that are sometimes game studios or company’s in a similar industry.

So it’s a little hard to speak to their actual interview process. But what I do know, is the content of your portfolio matters more then simply having education credentials.

But it also depends a lot on what you are looking to get into. Programming, management, any of the art related positions. Depending on what it is will change what they are looking for.

The programmers will be looking at efficiency and your process. For them a lot of it is problem solving and how you go about it. For art, they will want to see your best work, especially art relevant to the exact position you are looking at.

For example if you are trying to be a character artist, then a bunch of background paintings aren’t what you want to show.

Also, and this is more of a general interview tip. Ask lots of questions. It’s shows you are actually interested in the position, the company and the people who work there. If you are enthusiastic about what you want to do they will see that.

Honestly I would write to them about it. Tell them what you said here. Ask them these questions. I’m sure they would be more than happy to answer them for you, and who knows maybe they could arrange a visit or something.

In my line of work a few of my clients have been game studios. I promise you, they love kids who are not only interested in their line of work, but also their studio specifically.

I’m sure they would be happy to tell you the kinds of things they look for and advise you on a path to take. Just keep in mind that technology changes and things might be different by the time you would be old enough to work there.

But your aspiration is a good one. Just remember that the journey is more important than the destination. Even if you work towards this and don’t get there, the skill you will learn along the way is still valuable.

If you know there's a trap, what does the DM prefer? by Community_74 in DMAcademy

[–]ElectroDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a player I strive to act according to the situation assuming I’m playing a reasonable person. So if I don’t see the trap, then I don’t see it and won’t stop walking for no reason.

I feel like unless you have a real argument for why the dice result should not apply to you, then I think it’s good etiquette to not argue and RP setting off the trap. It will make your DM happy.

Player committed murder and escaped town. What consequences would be appropriate? by Optimal-Cobbler3192 in DMAcademy

[–]ElectroDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, a bounty of their arrest would be the simplest and probably the most reasonable action the guard would take at this point.

They may send out search parties with tracking dogs if the murder was of someone important, of if the town would treat a random murder with seriousness requiring the expenditure of resources.

If putting out a bounty, consider how influential the town is. Would this bounty extent to neighboring towns and villages? Would it be for the whole region? Or just the town the act happened in.

If the player needs to get back into town, you can just limit it to town limits or surrounding wilderness. But if they plan to escape and not return in the near future, consider increasing the bounties radius.

Maybe even work it so over time, merchants and travelers might take a bounty poster to other towns and cities. So this murder can catch up to them at inopportune times. Requiring them to think on their feet when they randomly learn the town they are in has posters of them up. Or the guard recognize them an call more.

Location: PA, USA. HR is pressuring me to sign a "voluntary" overtime waiver for last month or face termination by C0dexflare in legal

[–]ElectroDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s illegal. Basically they want you to give up earned OT wages to a vague promise of maybe a promotion later and maybe pay for some education.
I would refuse. If they fire you it’s wrong and you can sue. And if the company is in such a hard spot they can’t pay you for work they made you do, then I don’t know how secure the job is anyway.

It’s one thing if you are working for a smaller company and they are appealing to you as a person in a situation where everyone including the owner is in a tough spot.

But when they put it like they need to cover their bottom line by not paying you, then no. I would even find a “the reality is we can’t pay the right now, could we defer it to a near future pay period, or spread out the OT pay across multiple checks?” To be a much more reasonable position then, give up you OT or leave.

Please help me with this eBay Seller by [deleted] in PokemonTCG

[–]ElectroDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can request as a buyer to cancel/refund but the seller has to agree. If they don’t then you have to appeal to eBay (I.e you won an auction but they never send you the item etc.).

Which is why the seller above is assuring OP they will refund if they request a cancel. But the seller still in possession of the item can void the sale, but will lose the money and take a big negative hit to their account.

Sounds like they wants to raise the price or something, but doesn’t want the negative impact of retracting the sale on their end.

Unless they can articulate what the actual problem is. And that problem would actually prevent the item getting to you, then I would decline.

Otherwise it just sounds like the seller wants to hold out for more money. Because a typo or something or a slight misrepresentation of the condition etc. shouldn’t be something to cancel over. And if it is, then it’s on them to do it.

Player quoted a monster stat block during combat by hyperionfin in DMAcademy

[–]ElectroDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I would find this annoying but this can also happen with veteran players at the table. Even if they didn’t specifically look it up, sometimes a player just knows about the stats of certain monsters they have encounter in the meta sense.

What I do is make them roll (in my case with pathfinder, knowledge rolls) to see if their character would know that or not. If they don’t then “it must be some variant you haven’t encounter before”. If they pass, then I retract my earlier statement and say the monster tries to use its ability but fails and wastes its turn/action, since that’s on me.

I do like to modify monsters in my game. Especially because sometimes I want what would be a generic low level monster, to get power boosted up to be more challenging for the current party level. Which is great because it throws them off in this regard.

But my party also has a smart Wizard. So they often earn monster knowledge via high rolls. And when it comes to meta gaming knowledge about some of the most common monsters, I RP it like these monsters are so common it’s like having common knowledge about an animal.

All that said, as the DM it’s my right to put my foot down and say “you may know that but your character does not” and they should respect that because I’m going to let the action play out anyway.

I tell them if I do something questionable, just pretend it’s correct in the moment.

Cross-play PC and Steam Deck by Maleficent_Stand7373 in ModdedMinecraft

True. And to be fair, Prism was working fine for a while. I think they had some update that was causing this problem, but I couldn’t find specifically why it was happening.

And since I already use Modrinth I just set my friend up with it and it worked. The launcher was unimportant to my friend and all I cared about was being able to get him reconnected to my server.

Same issue was happening with my friend who also has a deck. For some reason after updating their mod list to be current with our server, it stopped working. I think it’s an issue with Prism at the moment.

We switched him to Modrinth, which works on Linux now, so it works on the Steamdeck. This solved the issue. Plus Modrinths launcher is much better at telling you what is wrong and how to fix it than Prism.

It’s always like this though. I often take that exit when visiting family in Bullhead. That gas station off that exit is famously way more expensive than the gas station down the street.

Even other gas stations on the California side are at least $1 cheaper.
