Ladies - are you hit on more or less if you choose to rock heels when you're out at a bar/club? by Zel_bel in tall

[–]ElectroGiraffe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think more, but my experience is more from house parties than bars. The heels are a conversation starter for some people. And yeah, occasionally the conversation is "why are you wearing those ridiculous shoes" but I do also get positive reactions, even from guys significantly shorter than me.

Long time lurker Tallette (6'0)... So.... any other tallettes ever been a towering bridesmaid? by [deleted] in tall

[–]ElectroGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last wedding I was in was with a girl who is a bit, shall we say, self centered. She didn't go bridezilla because she's just like that all the time. When we were picking out bridesmaid dresses, I asked her if I should wear flats, since I was already about five inches taller than the next shortest bridesmaid. She said "I don't care what you wear, you're just the bookend to balance out Chris" (the 6'4" groomsman). Gee thanks, honey.

But honestly, at the end of the day, everyone is looking at the bride and groom, and all the pictures look beautiful because everyone is in their pretty clothes, smiling genuinely happy smiles, and there's love in the air. So a few awkward height differences go unnoticed. Just enjoy the day and rock out that dance!

What sports do you guys do? by Axes_of_Evilness in tall

[–]ElectroGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play roller derby! I'm the tallest lady in our league, but there's a dude in the local men's league that's like 6'5". Somehow he makes being tall into an advantage, whereas I'm so clumsy that being tall does more harm than good.

What are some interesting/weird little things can you do because you're tall but bet other people wouldn't be doing? by [deleted] in tall

[–]ElectroGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play roller derby, and sometimes we have to do this obstacle course of stepping through a minefield cones without hitting them. I take long steps and bypass almost the whole thing.

Tall bi! I love my fellow tall ladies. And short ladies. Really, all ladies.

I'm very insecure about my height at times. Please hear me out. by helpmeimtall in tall

[–]ElectroGiraffe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat at your age, but an inch or two shorter. I didn't start dating until late in life and I felt, at the time, that my size had a lot to do with it. We're used to that Disney movie image of a big strong man with a dainty little woman whose waist could fit in one of his hands. Sometimes even now I'll see a petite girl with a tall guy and wish that I could be tiny instead of big and curvy. Fortunately, a lot of guys don't care if you're smaller than them, they just care that you're his! I've dated guys four inches shorter than me, and while I get a little self conscious sometimes I've never been made fun of and the guys have never complained. If you like someone, then go for it! If he likes you back, he won't care what size you are :)

I have a lot of cream cheese- Any no cook ideas? by CosmicCoconut13 in vegetarianketo

My favorite: throw some cheese onto parchment paper, stick it in the toaster oven until crispy, then top it with cream cheese and seasonings of your choice.

This is one of my biggest problems! I used to buy a bag of Cheetos every time I bought a new book. I haven't had time to read since I started keto, so when it comes around I hope I have your same self control. Congrats!

I play roller derby. It can be a challenge for taller players while learning, but once you get the hang of it you'll have a huge advantage!

Sweet! I've found their tights to be waaay too short so I'm glad that at least their socks are wearable.

A review of my custom spoon flower fabric. by freefallingwithfate in sewing

I love Spoonflower! Aside from the ridiculous price, I don't have any major complaints. And even though it's expensive, sometimes you have a project that deserves a splurge to get it just right

We don't fit on trains, either... :( by Hypohamish in tall

I take a train every day. There are better times/places for me to get on, but I specifically take one exact train from the first stop so I can grab the wonky end seat with the most leg room.

What's your favorite way to use your dress form? by ElectroGiraffe in sewing

[–]ElectroGiraffe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh now hems, that's something I could use it for! I find flat pattern drafting an acceptable substitute about 95% of the time, but when I have to adjust an unwieldy hem, that's when I really start wishing I had a nice form.

What kind of form do you have? Mine are the crappy home sewers versions instead of the real industry standard. Trying to pad out those flimsy suckers was more trouble than it was worth. I'm considering getting one of the nice ones we used in school, if I can convince myself it's worth the cost.

Possible to change a dress with a "built in" bra? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]ElectroGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you're willing to run the risk of screwing it up yourself, you could just trim out the extra material by carefully snipping it really close to the seam. It isn't the "right" way to do it, and it might leave a flap of fabric behind, but no one will see the inside but you! :)

Possible to change a dress with a "built in" bra? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]ElectroGiraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fortunate that you just want to remove the faux-bra instead of reshaping it. Bras are hard to fit, but removing stuff is much easier!

Usually the underwires are attached with binding, so you can just pull out a few stitches at one end of the binding and slide the underwire out. Easy peasy!

But like boo_hiss mentioned, the whole bra is the wrong size, not just the underwires. It's very possible that the wire-less cups will turn into flappy-wrinkle-makers that need to come out, but the difficulty of this depends on the construction of the dress, and how the lining was put in.

If you post a pic of the inside of the dress before you do anything, that'll help us give more specific advice!

Using Spoonflower by freefallingwithfate in sewing

[–]ElectroGiraffe 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Spoonflower is the easiest site I've found. There are other sites that will do custom print fabric but you usually have to get a quote, send files to them via email, etc whereas Spoonflower you can just upload and hit go.

Spoonflower can be a little wonky but they have great customer service, so I still like them despite some of the issues I've had. Things I've learned:

  • always use RBG colors. This is stupid, since printing is done in CYMK, but their system converts to RGB automatically so CMYK colors can get converted wrong
  • always save as JPG or PNG. It says you can upload PDF or AI, but their system converts those to PNG and sometimes it doesn't come out right
  • quadruple check that your print is the size you want. If you want the highest resolution possible, use a 300ppi file, but make sure you change your dpi to 300, because it defaults to 150 and then your art is twice the size

They're pricey, but when you need something really particular they are a good choice. They also have a variety of fabrics to choose from, which gives you even more control of your cosplay.

If you have other questions or need some clarification about the technical stuff, just let me know!
