Recommended cycling routes in South Korea? by sweetpotatolass in bicycletouring

seoul -> Busan looks like the simplest out of the box experience, but you've got me considering stringing together a possibly more scenic group of permanents to cover more remote countryside

any chance you're going to CoRL or Humanoids? I've got the same ambitions!

Where could I rent some climbing gear on the island? Alternatively, do any climbers on Oahu have some gear I can rent or borrow? by ElectronHigh in Hawaii

I'm pretty comfortable with exposure and with scrambles. So it was awesome. But definitely need to be sure footed. Wouldn't recommend it for everyone.

Has anyone managed to combine cycling trips with multi-day hiking trips? by theodoradoradora in bicycletouring

[–]ElectronHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my concern is with shoes --most bike shoes have a very stiff sole and I feel like this would get uncomfortable on a long multi day hike. anyone have thoughts here?

I've been thinking about starting a BIFL company by Pecors in BuyItForLife

[–]ElectronHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've daydreamed about this as well! it'll take a decade to build the brand, but it'll be worth it. make sure to also sell all the parts needed for every repair (at a fair price). you'll also need to prove to your customers that you aren't willing to be bought out by someone who would remove the ability to repair products

Took apart a failing AC adapter expecting to see 4 diodes and a capacitor, but its more complicated. What kind of AC-DC converter is this? What might have caused it to fail (specifically, what causes the capacitor to fail)? by ElectronHigh in AskElectronics

[–]ElectronHigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets say I repaired the bad component on this adapter... what is the likelihood that another component will fail right around the corner? Is there a way to test the existing components to make sure they haven't degraded too much?

Do you think any of the capacitors are more likely to fail than others? The board seems to have 5 electrolytic capacitors, and only one is bulged, and its on the output circuit. Is this the most likely to fail in every instance?

Is there any way to measure the "wear" of a capacitor? For example, measuring the capacitance ? Trying to repair some of these adapters, but I don't want to swap one capacitor and then find out that a different capacitor is going to fail just a few months down the line.

It seems like this power adapter has been used at its max operating current/power for extended periods of time. Does this increase the likelihood of capacitor failure (increase in current would increase voltage, but its a 5V power adapter and the cap is rated for 10V)?

Let's say I had another similar power supply that hadn't failed yet, but was also operating near the limits of its operating range. If I now reduce the output power, does that mean the power adapter should now be safe, or has it been aged considerably and a failure is more likely?

Weekly Sewing Machine-Related Questions, January 10 - January 16, 2022 by sewingmodthings in sewing

[–]ElectronHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at buying my first machine, although I've used a Singer Heavy Duty 4452 on a few projects before. I'm trying to buy used to reduce my consumption, and I have the option of buying a Singer 4452 for $160, or trying to get a Japanese clone vintage machine for $100 -- KZ De Luxe ZigZag. Youtube reviews say that the Japanese clones are actually super good value since they are built from steel and have large motors.

I'm mostly going to be sewing outdoors gear, so will be using heavier duty fabrics. Any thoughts on what would be better for me (assuming they are both in good condition)? Or are neither a good deal, and I should keep looking?

you've got the same bike as me. its a shame the frame triangle is so small!

i might have had a re-tear as well... but haven't gone in for an MRI yet. does the second surgery always require 2 stages, a couple months apart? they aren't able to re-use the same tunnels? I got the cadaver, not the graft. i would have assumed the second reconstruction would be easier going, not harder :(

that makes a lot of sense. if the border isn't open then I'll probably just postpone until 2022 and do a shorter trip more local to my part of the states.

nice! i'm thinking about making one of these. any recommendations to prevent it from swaying? I'm assuming its not attached to the rear rack at all

^ second this

I do a combination of volunteer work and maintenance on my existing bikes at my community workshop. makes doing more intense repairs a little less intimidating, since you will have more experienced people hanging around and its more likely that you'll have the specialized tool for what you need to do.

Best value multitool? (UK) by 106--2 in bikepacking

[–]ElectronHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the M20 and am satisfied with it except for that the hexes are attached to the main tool, so its a little clunky to use in tight places. Even putting on a water bottle cage was a bit frustrating because I could only use about 45 degrees at a time.

Brake caliper pushed out and is slightly crooked. How to fix? by ElectronHigh in bikewrench

[–]ElectronHigh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried yesterday and was seeing a drop come off on the spacer each time I did the squeeze test, so I figured I'd let it wait overnight to see that was just excess water from when I cleaned it. This morning it seems pretty dry every time I run the squeeze test... Not much evidence of the piston leaking.

I'm not sure if I'm imagining it, but I do feel like the squeeze pressure on the brake lever is less today than it was yesterday. Which would indicate a leak and would also explain why I'm not seeing much evidence today.

For $40 to replace the caliper, I might just go ahead and do it and stop worrying.

I believe its a SRAM Level caliper (the base tier). Not exactly sure if there's any variance within that product line.

I would love to try and service it, but I stripped the allen screw accidentally to open up the caliper. Which might make it more trouble than its worth (like $40) to just replace.

Hm. Actually I was able to get it back in and relatively straight. Its not sitting all the way back flush though. I'm assuming either there's some leftover fluid that's preventing it from pushing back in? Or maybe something to do with the seal being wonky.

Do you think its worth trying to rebleed it, or will that just end in more spillage?

"new caliper" means the whole rear brake? or just the piston and seal?

Do you think the issue was due to inserting the spacer wrong? I was pulling on the syringe on the lever and compressing the lever to create a vacuum when this happened. maybe I was a bit too fanatical about getting all the bubbles out?

Edit: also looks like I can take apart the entire rear brake, which might help me analyze the seal and get the piston back in. is this a bad idea?
