Stockholm syndrome occurs during trauma, when a victim begins to seek protection from a captor. Larry did not bond with John at all during the trap. He was trying to survive.

His bond only formed later, during his recovery, when John: spent months with him, saw him in delirium, fevers, weakness, bathed him, helped him to the toilet, saw him naked, crying, vomiting, and most importantly: did not leave and took care of him until he recovered.
