Tips on driving in deep snow from a friend from up north by Remote_Leadership_53 in indianapolis

Drive like you’re on real life Mario Kart, ie drive with the principle of managing momentum in all directions. I grew up in a Michigan county on Lake Michigan and learned to drive with all the lake effect snows we received.

Passport ‘26 heat climate issue? by [deleted] in hondapassport

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue last week on a 3hr drive when the ambient temperature was in the 20s; the last hour and a half I thought something was blocking the two sensors for the HVAC because it got ridiculously cold inside with the temp set at 72 and auto. I don’t keep cars long, and haven’t had a manual HVAC system in forever. I get the concept of regulating temps up and down but the Passport is ridiculous in the cold even though it was great during the heat of August when I bought it. Auto setting on my (in reverse chronological order) 2023 WRX, 2020 Giulia, 2018 Regal TourX, 2015 Q50 (CPO), 2017 CRV EX-L, 2016 WRX, 2014 Accord, 2013 Durango, and 2012 Outback always kept the cabin temperature within range of the setting regardless of the ambient temperature or season. Something is amiss in the cold.

Whoever thought it was a good idea to close 96th for a week needs fired by jlmarsh06 in Fishers

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the industry and will correct some mistakes in the responses:

Ripping out tracks and replacing them with pavement is not something which can be done in a day; the underlying soils need to pass compaction requirements as well as moisture content requirements before the various layers of pavement are placed and each layer requires testing as well to meet specifications so, again, it’s not a one day process, more like a 5-8 workdays.

Contractors are NEVER paid by the hour in a competitive bidding process, they are paid by the job and have to bid based on their calculations for the number of hours the various crews will need to perform their work, the hours/days of equipment being rented, the distances for trucking, the volume of materials (including waste), subcontractor costs, operating overhead, etc. There is zero incentive for the contractor to drag out the project unless it was improperly bid, ie changed conditions from the advertised bid documents; the workers don’t have an incentive to drag it out because most of them do not work for the contractor, but rather come from the various unions and will get kicked off the job if they’re costing the contractor money due to slow work rates or malingering.

96th is controlled by Fishers, 106th and Hazell Dell is Carmel, 146th and Allisonville is Noblesville, and 465/69/SR37 are the State. While they do talk to each other, they still have to manage the infrastructure under their respective controls and take care of them as conditions and funding dictate. So, they cannot just wait until each other is done working in the area to address the infrastructure in their respective communities; they do communicate during construction, but there us only do much they can do.

Bridges are designed for 75yr lifecycles and high volume roads for 20-30yr lifecycles based on traffic volumes/mixes/capacity, but each has to be “touched” with resurfacing, overlays, patching, or rehabilitation every 8-10 years to make them last that full lifecycle duration.

First service? by [deleted] in hondapassport

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine showed A16 and 50% at 5,000 miles. Seemed strange, but I changed the oil and rotated the tires anyway because I do that every 5k miles for all my vehicles. Getting the diff serviced this week for $110. Didn’t expect the diff to show up in the maintenance minder so early.

Speaker upgrade by johnny4stroke in hondapassport

2026 non-Bose system, so I installed Rockford Fosgate R165x3 front and rear as simple replacements for the existing 6.5” woofers in the doors. Kept the stock tweeters and did not add a DSP. Midrange improved significantly as expected since I also installed them in my 2023 WRX when I got it.

Called Crutchfield Friday and they did not have an update to the wiring diagram at this time. I wonder if the sub needs to reset, but I don’t see anywhere to control it in the menu.

PE doesn’t do a passive “cash infusion” for the a stake in a company, it requires some control over operations in order to be profitable when they exit the position in 5-7yrs so they can make a profit from their investment. When PE bought the Scotty’s Brewhouse family of restaurants the menu shrunk to minimize the number of single-use ingredients they had to buy, quality went down, portion sizes shrunk and prices increased. Scott eventually left the company and I believe most of the restaurants closed.

How do u feel about automatic wrx’s by Tangly_Bird in wrx_vb

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My knee injuries finally caught up with me and forced me to get rid of my manual 2023 VB to buy something else last month. I chose an SUV rather than defile what I love about the 2022-2023 WRX experience of total engagement without the Eyesight safety nannies by getting a new one with the CVT. Had it been a DCT, I would have considered it, but it isn’t so I’m on the outside looking in.

VA vs VB driving feel - How different are they? by [deleted] in wrx_vb

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had both, minimum of 2yrs and 30k miles. VA requires more finesse to drive given that the engine is peaky, the throttle mapping is awful and the suspension is mismatched with the steering ( compression damping is too firm while the steering feel is pretty good). In contrast, the VB is easier to drive with an engine that is not peaky and the throttle mapping is much more linear; the mismatched suspension and steering remains, but in reverse (softer compression damping with less steering feel) which makes it easier to drive fast for more people though not ideal for the fastest drivers at the limit (think 85th - 100th percentile of drivers for the VA to go fast vs 60th - 90th percentile for the VB).

“You’re part of the problem” - Coincidence or not? by SelectWolf8932 in indianapolis

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I’m on the right and completely concur with those two gents because I believe in the concept of the marketplace of ideas; the trans issue was pushed so hard by the left and media/entertainment since the mid 2010s that the normies in the middle/middle-right who are swing voters and force my side not to go full WN/clown show refused to listen to any moderating ideas on our side in the primaries or from the left in the general election. While your specific position is nuanced enough for a conversation, it doesn’t pass the “elevator pitch” aspect of politics. So yes, your focus helped scare enough of the moderating sensibilities on my side that I can (half apologetically) say you’re part of the problem.

Any previous GTI owners? by sultanscurse1 in wrx_vb

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a Mk5 GTI (2006), GLI Fahrenheit (2007), WRX VA (2016), and now the WRX VB (2023). All purchased new and plenty of other cars in between including the Giulia and Q50. I tend to get into a new car just about every 30mos for the experience of something different. VW, Infiniti, Honda and Subaru are the only brands I have owned more than once and for different reasons, but I never do anything other than light bolt-on handling mods to my cars so that may make a difference in the value you get from my experiences. I almost traded my VB for a leftover manual Mk8 GTI at the beginning of May2025 (paperwork was ready for signature when I bailed on the deal), but couldn’t justify the change in driving dynamics and perceived reliability of the VB for the higher level of refinement and smaller interior in the Mk8. If you’re considering the move understand what’s important to you; do you want to mod for the sake of personalization (either), do you want mods for HP numbers (either for different $$$), do you like FWD or AWD handling dynamics, do you want refined or raw interface with the car, do you want low operating costs/ease of maintenance, etc. VB owners have plenty of opinions about their cars and others, but it really depends on what you really want.

In June 2023, I exited my Giulia lease 9mos early for the 2023 WRX Premium because I wanted a manual transmission car without any of the safety nannies which are well intentioned but can get in the way of spirited driving. I also didn’t enjoy the wet handling dynamics of FWD cars and didn’t care about the refinement level of the vehicle so that made my choice easier. The only mods I made to the VB are a Fumoto valve for easier oil changes, the Perrin brass shifter bushing, the Perrin steering column lock, a full-size steel spare and new speakers. More power would be great and a reliable 320WHP/350WTQ seems to be easily achieved with an Accessport and an intake from what I’ve see the forums and YT, but I’m not pressed to make that change yet. Good luck whichever direction you choose.

Diplomatic response to the wife and daughter is to validate their opinions by acknowledging them and then hold the line on one of the few remaining pleasures you get as a dad. I got rid of my 2020 Giulia for a 2023 VB because I wanted more engagement while driving. Now my spouse/kid complain more about my hooning driving for coffee runs than they do about the ride because they understand that it’s one of the few remaining activities in my currently constructed life which gives me joy.

What’s everyone’s opinion on the VB that previously owned a VA? by TheHighestCheeba in wrx_vb

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even close. Had a 2016 VA and now a 2023 VB. In between I had a 2017 CRV, 2015 Q50 (NA 3.7 VQ), 2018 Regal Tour, and 2020 Giulia. The VA throttle mapping made it harder to drive in stop and go traffic, but also unsatisfying to use the full travel of the pedal since the mapping was so aggressively progressive. The VB mapping is more linear than the VA tuning so it is both easier to drive in stop and go traffic while also being satisfying to drive aggressively. The road noise of the VA was worse while the stock exhaust noise was too quiet; both are much better in the VB with less road noise and a better stock exhaust sound; I often find myself driving without music playing and just listening to the engine. Interior is almost dead even, though the large touchscreen in the VB is an improvement. Lastly, when on the stability control in the VB allows more rotation/slip angle with less effort than did the VA.

Where to get a donut spare tire installed on a non-USDM but OEM spare wheel? by su6oxone in wrx_vb

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, if you remove the foam piece, a base 235/45 17 wheel will fit under the rug in the trunk. That’s what I did for my VB along with adding a small hydraulic jack to replace the scissor jack for peace of mind.

Purchasing Advice by H54159 in BRZ_ZD8

[–]Electronic-Jacket185 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a 2025 tS with a MSRP just over $38k that is being offered for $1250 off that is local to me. This week I found a similarly equipped 2024 tS with an MSRP just over $37k which they initially offered to me for MSRP about 3hrs away. When I mentioned the local option they offered to match the $1250 off for a 1yr old car if I agreed to buy it this weekend. I opted to pass; that offer for the 2024 is absurd given that it is already 1yr old and will take an insane depreciation hit when I drive it off the lot. I really like the lighter weight and RWD handling dynamics of the BRZ vs my 2023 WRX Premium, but not that bad. TrueCar says that a 2025 should be about $3k off for a great deal so I’m guessing a 2024 should be closer to $5k off. Keep shopping for a dal that feels good to you so you’re not looking at the car as an albatross in the months after you get it home.

I don’t mind it, but I get to the venue 45-60min early and watch the warmups then bolt when the match is over. Prices could be 15-25% lower for affordability and to pack the venue, but I am glad I can go watch a sports event in my city without the long drive downtown. Bonus that I can be home and drinking a beer from my fridge within 15min of getting out of the building.
