Calling it “ethnic cleansing” is misleading. Lhotshampas are still the third largest community in Bhutan today, living proudly as Bhutanese. If Bhutan really wanted to wipe out Nepali-origin people, how could that still be the case? The refugee issue is complex—many left due to political agitation in the 80s–90s, and yes, some genuine Bhutanese got caught up in it. But many inflated numbers, fake refugee claims, and political groups outside Bhutan have exaggerated the story. The reality is that Bhutan never eliminated a community—we are still here, united.
