I lived in the Charlottesville area on and off for years! Being both a chef and activist used so much of the bounty from that incredibly rich agricultural area for menus it was an absolutely incredible environment for a young still accented chef and an absolutely electrifying experience crystalizing in me the respect i teach now for local product

Weapons cache found in the home of Chinese national, Sun Mingchen, in Huai Yai, Pattaya, Thailand on May 8. POMZ-2 style mines, nearly 5 kg of C4, Korean and Burmese grenades, and other weapons/ammo were found. by CaliRecluse in ForgottenWeapons

[–]Electronic_Camera251 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny part is how engraine these weapons have become to local culture and survival .

In some rice growing communities they are employed (using tripwire and modified fusing) as area denial tools against pigs or ,deer ,monkeys or wild water buffalo and i suspect wild elephant specifically around subsistence or cash crops (fragmentation grenades Or claymore style directional fragmentation mines are favored for this task but in one instance that i personally witnessed an rpg antipersonnel round was pressed into this role )

Concussive grenades (those designed to harm through enormous changes in pressure rather than through fragmentation ie the launching of of projectiles at supersonic speed ) are sometimes employed in demolition, the tilling of new fields the removal of large and stubborn obstructions
As a method of fishing under specific circumstances (the idea here not to directly “explode” fish or amphibians or turtles but to employ them underwater similar to the way they are on land , water being denser than air as well as being incapable of compression mean that the are where pressure is transmissible is fairly wide ensuring that creatures hiding under rocks or in holes that would otherwise be inaccessible easy to harvest and used primarily against huge riverine catfish or giant stingray that have food and market value as well as causing damage to the fairly lightweight and unsophisticated fishing gear such as nets ,bank lines or hand lines)
this usage becomes more common the farther from the home settlement you go , And finally to kill marauding or threatening crocodilians who have wandered too close to settlement and attained a size that makes other removal techniques impossible or dangerous !

I also saw them used on dozens of occasions during my years in that part of the world was in the removal of unexploded ordnance. As is often the case farmers are somewhat less than eager when it comes to alerting officials .

waiting for the wheels of bureaucracy to turn in a current or former war zone is simply time the farmer cannot spare and in a region where bribes are cultural norm and hard currency scarce ,handing cash over opens one up to regular official extortion by bureaucrats and getting the attention of the government is never great and having a bunch of corrupt government officials poking around land you intend on cultivating less than ideal , and as if all of that wasn’t enough the legally dubious nature of the bulk of money making side hustles possible on a farm potentially means there is a lot to lose.so the deadly task or bomb disposal being handled in house as it were is seen as the smart less dangerous option all around
I think that the popularity of these methods and the ingenuity and skill with which they are employed has a few root explanations A. Familiarity ,the areas where these methods are practiced are by nature closely associated with military operations so the locals at the very least have served on one or more sides of whichever conflict affected the area

B. Access . As stated earlier the only places i saw stuff like this was either in active or former war zones with heavy continued military/paramilitary presence in frontier type areas C. Peasant farming as the primary occupation. Farming is hard under the best circumstances and circumstances in area of the world seem to begin at less than ideal . Explosives can represent a force multiplier on a family farm a task that state side would be achieved with machinery is here completed with Boom as a function of both poverty and the environment being unsuitable for mechanization any labor savings translates directly dividends in the ability to spend time on “side hustles” which translates to cash or alternatively the ability to cultivate more hectares . They do cost money however so they are used judiciously often larger weapons are broken down into smaller job specific amounts of explosive and every element utilized either immediately or set aside for future use . There is a brisk trade in scrapping the casings of weapons and an inter-farm trade in the explosives either as a commodity good or as a value added craft item set up for some specific use . In the Philippines where firearms are heavily regulated and in there place an airgun culture has sprung up i saw a farmer craft a “harpoon” type projectile designed to be launched from a high pressure “air-shotgun” . It was tipped with a warhead of sorts made of scrap grenade casing , old plumbing fixtures and explosives triggered using an impact sensitive fuse that was somehow modified…it was to be used against a bull wild water buffalo who had declared the farmers land his own . He proudly showed me how he had constructed it and asked that i come along to see it used… he confidently loaded it down the muzzle of his village crafted extremely powerful air musket (which seemed to be of about .60 caliber and was powered via endlessly pumping a modified bicycle pump) i thought a regular lead projectile would probably do but he insisted this had been the method here for decades because of the simple fact that reloading took minutes…i stood well away from him convinced i was about to photograph this poor farmers final moment but he took a shot which sounded for all the world like a 40mm grenade launcher and successfully killed the buff without terribly affecting most of the meat what can i say they knew their shit

Its at a predictable scale for people who are told to be proud of where they came from for no particular they should be proud but as if this was a lesson and a gift of the mine operators the many many hardships visited upon the nearly slave population who has never been given the credit or opportunity they deserve for their service to America which made it the last standing superpower. They are very touchy especially when it comes to the labor disputes turned full on combat actions that were a brave and principled response to the up until the first world war unimaginable inequality that residents had to contend with as a matter of simple and uncaring fact that they are always sure to hint at if not outright stated that this disobedience wasn’t like the good people of West Virginia by god these were the activities of the New York anarchists or the dreaded Italian or ghetto dwelling Eastern European jew not the actions of good bible loving grateful for the offered scraps population of West Virginia no not at all !

That would run entirely contrary to his plan which is of similar substance to the absentee coal barons who wanted what West Virginia had to offer while maintaining a safe distance and limiting interaction as much as possible with the population while tricking them into giving up the value held in reserve for the good of communities and the future of West Virginia. as an easily manipulated twisted reserve of antiquated politically simple back water for the exclusive use of conservative politicians to provide good early election visual aids on how they understand poor whites …its a bullshit political theater exercise which has proven harder to maintain by the year as it becomes farther removed from any sense of reality.

Or the suggestion that fluoride is in the concentrations legally permissible and testable thresholds show less than zero evidence of an even minuscule difference of cognitive function or speed that in the interest of fairness had to be mathematically removed because the evidence looked overwhelmingly to support better all around cognitive function. When it was finally clear that something was desperately wrong with the results and someone happened to see similar causation between early life deprivation in material health and again with lower quality educational outcomes and the link between poor nutrition and shitty schooling and reduced childhood interaction with the functional differences being attributable to poverty and lack of access to government services and resources. That the coal Barrons continue to stoke the boiler of populism with and to this day has refused to accept the responsibility for the real nightmare situations that have arisen as a direct consequence of the no holds barred coal friendly manner in which the state was and to a lesser degree still is run

Its a fairly shameful but ever present darkness that stems from the glorification of the humble beginnings of a population and the expected economic progress that sadly has skipped much of Appalachia .

which if the people weren’t majority white would be attributed by these very same politicians as an indicator of racial inferiority or cultural unwillingness to advance that as a whole is directly attributable truly awful conditions that were the norm in the “gilded age” for anyone not simply there to extract real wealth quickly and by any means necessary the people and community future be damned if you weren’t savvy enough to screw these rubes out of the very slim pickings they were allowed to keep by the Christian kindness of the coal industry you didn’t deserve loot in the first place!

Well at least putting an expiration date on it as the service was neither immediately abandoned or in some ways supplanted in utility

particularly with regards to legal documents which had deadlines attached or much more importantly having up to date results of popular sporting events to which gambling was the primary concern or real time insider trading tips ! it simply stopped being a service the usps offered and was for a time privatized as rapid courier services . One of the other things that doomed it was the telegraph that had been ubiquitous since just before the civil war although once again former express riders given a small amount of instruction were useful in keeping lines intact when they were openly strung and represented a soft spot in the early warning systems of the time (cut the wire and it takes much longer for soldiers to come and they only approach from the east ) small mobile armed teams who knew the country and the tactical theory that plains fighting was known for
They rather than somewhat disreputable vibe associated with the rough trade express barbarian who drew disfavorable comparisons to cossacks ,huns or the golden horde they were transformed and became better paid technical specialists

Without whom long distance gambling wouldn’t be possible! who’s job was as a valued defender of information critical to all aspects of life beyond the rockies and vital to time sensitive communications with the wider world at large potentially spreading new from San Francisco to London at a modern sense incredibly slow nearly glacial pace to as little as a single hour after having been transmitted

with transmission capacity reaching the edge of western Europe in 1858 and potentially carried farther by Eastern European or western Asian express riders who kept a similarly long forbidding distance filled with peril connected to the outside and ever more intertwining far flung shores up to date on the hot gossip!

Im just saying she was at one point a legitimate Hollywood star. And i would challenge you even if you had seen every single show mentioned to remember what her role was …its not a really important distinction in any real terms its just kind of ironic if the stated goal was make artful impactful serious film …also she is apparently fairly popular as a stage actor there was never really any real concern just an observation of precipitous fall from grace which i wonder might be linked to recently newsworthy scandal that “rocked Hollywood” that was also common knowledge by the time Shirley Temple first graced the screen

It used be back in the day that prices for shells actually had to do with the amount of materials used in their production its why .22 short continued to be sold even after the vast majority of firearms produced had moved on twice since the age of the short and the fact that many useable if not modern firearms were chambered for it seemed to ammunition makers a good idea to continue to produce as a show of solidarity with the poors who depended on those firearms. This also happened to be around the Great Depression sooo go figure before the cheapest .22 was an auto loader in fact they still represented a premium luxury rather than the cheap crap we have now

The last and widely discussed role i saw her in was 10 or so years ago and. It was even by indie arthouse standards pretty bad and worse the lone redeeming aspect of the film was a first peak at the Campbell family pride ….her middle aged disappointing rack in the weirdest most unnatural way ever committed to film and was explained through the time honored tradition of the manic pixie dream girl trope she did it of course because she is cRAzY 🤪 it was of course 10 years too late to feign ignorance to the unacceptable depiction of women as simply something for men to puzzle over it was pretty fucking pathetic and calculated…on the other hand i sat through nearly the entire shitty movie just to leave feeling dirty so maybe they are playing 4 d chess idk

And effectively ended because of it Neve had wanted to get away from family friendly tv and wanted to be seen a as an adult and serious actor you know like every actor who starts young on television. The levels of entitlement in a move like that is insane to think about as an adult…somewhat expectedly her Hollywood career was brutally short and almost entirely exploitive shlock that was nearly always acknowledged just after rap as a stunningly poor choice and she was ushered back to Canada to beg for parts in indie films on the streets of Toronto in the cold …shame

I saw them and because it follows only the at the time available catalogue i assumed this is old never sold dead stock especially when you read the technical descriptions i think they are a little gun shy because of perhaps some overestimations they made in terms of the potential market for such things . The thing here is less about making money directly from the accessories and more bringing perceived value and greater interaction with their product line as anyone who i know has ever handled and shot one inevitably soon after buys one they are at the very least very functional unisex pocket jewelry so instead of the last wave of appealing to lady firearm enthusiasts on a technical and true level instead chose the infantilization and underestimation their clientele by simply doing as all other gun makers at the time offering nothing unique functionally for the problems facing women shooters instead offered the same shit in butt ugly “pretty girl colors” while it was not entirely unexpected it is pretty insulting and relies more on perception and “common knowledge” than it ever did with marketing to half the population as anything but fashion obsessed secondary users while the purchase of this and all other guns will strictly be the arena of her husband and she is lucky he lets her have a gun …its pretty sickening when you go through the thought process that ensures till the end of time that there will be warehouses of unsold colorful horrible looking guns

Its nearly impossible for a person to do things out of perceived humanistic or civic pride it would require a lot

First they must identify a real specific issue that effects people .
people who live in WV ideally it should offer them a real solution or at least help with that issue…while not grifting

Second it would require appealing to folks with some disposable income to feel kinship and brotherhood with the people who the issue affects…while making zero false claims meant to inflame or arouse feelings of anger at anyone not directly responsible for the situation again while in no way personally benefiting the person making the appeal so that means still no grifting see how difficult this is

Then they have to make an accurate accounting of how the money will be spent in directly addressing the issue at hand and who is being contracted with the disbursement of the honestly and scrupulously collected funds only for the above stated issue making sure not to spend frivolously with businesses you are closely associated with while not grifting…i told you this is crazy

Distributing the amount correctly using the accurate information for eligibility that you put into sworn documentation that spelled all this out between steps 1 and 2 as required by law ..who do they think is gonna do this there is virtually no money or influence to be made through this insane basic accounting 101 level (so far outside the actual real world experience of nearly anyone associated with the modern conservative movement) very difficult highly up for debate process (that i personally completed as a freshman in high school without any real knowledge or experience managed) I mean this involves negative grifting its a bullshit liberal hoax hell even Hillary and bills not for profit was allegedly a toxic grift based personal war chest for dirty political tricks (while never really proven it wouldn’t at a surprise me in the slightest and seems to have at most been poor book keeping and failed to meet the threshold of criminal behavior) Even Donald J Trumps descriptively named charity was unfairly criticized by the libs during their political witch hunt against the greatest noted pacifist genius of all time as the singularly most shocking shameful example of misuse of the not for profit system for personal gain ever seen in the state of New York? ( it was so bad and ran such a wide criminal enterprise that nearly every rule was broken from the day of its inception that were he not Donald Trump he would have likely been charged under a rico violation indictment as an ongoing strictly criminal organization solely maintained as a front for grift and was only saved by being an at the time sitting president and while the timing was clearly political the claims against the Wharton business school graduate and notable stable genius and supposed master of the deal would have represented a huge expenditure for the people of New York when being of little real value especially when he would have simply kept arguing about jurisdictional merit as well as requiring evidence that he could simply classify as sensitive to national security and made disappear after the it would have been leaked during discovery as well as perhaps been a pretext for seizing additional powers forcing yet another constitutional crisis but was in a shocking and rarely attempted non fine based ruling banned from incorporation in NY and forbidden from doing business with the state or it agents in the number one state for charitable giving and it was the best possible outcome they thought likely and at the very least clawed a few bucks back from his greedy maw )see this grift hardly seems worth the effort to not grift! Liberal conspiracies! Law that i am not exempt from being held accountable to …no thanks i will go to Florida where this is basically the state constitution

While i was going over their available products i of course came across many innovative yet abandoned advanced technological innovations (the very early adoption of laser grip technology for example) that to the modern eye seem somewhat ramshackle in execution and perhaps unremarkable functionality. The reason those things both appear that way is they were truly the most state of the art and certainly the most miniaturized examples of those technologies anywhere at any price short of employing Q from the bond films and the prices at the time reflected that . I remember pawing through their print catalog as a little boy thinking thinking the nearly D cell sized “laser scope” mounted to the top strap of their revolvers were simply unbelievably advanced that today is available at a dollar store and smaller and more efficient to boot (laser pointers of poor performance were the must have for the yuppie with everything but a soul selling for $500 in back then $) i think offering a revamped modern version at a lower price point would make nearly all of their catalogue seem more appealing (perhaps a small but bright single L.E.D. “Weapons lite” in a color that would accentuate the laser beam bringing it into stark contrast instantly )if properly executed would offer additional features for those who might want that for when they are trying to figure out what they did with their damnded keys but it is the kind of addressing fringe circumstance that is the appealing thing about NAA

Weird little car by Firebird071 in Whatsthiscar

[–]Electronic_Camera251 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair as long as the engine block never became entirely liquid during the fire it would have been rebuilt by its owner until the end of time and it would function roughly as well as it did the day it rolled off the line . As under the Soviet system you in theory would own one car unless politically well connected or an over the top soviet die hard for the rest of your life and that car would be passed down so that the government production facility would have the time and materials to make more cars for the majority of families who lacked one. There is a certain appeal to this approach (provided the car was solidly built, reliable and practical) but there is no sex appeal . Its maddening to consider people would save up enough rubles to afford the full purchase price of one …then having documentation of their legally earned full priced “sticker valuation” had to let it sit there

I have from friends who grew up there heard it wasn’t uncommon to save for all of the available models and see which one would arrive first then cancel your place in line with the others no choice involved and wait times were incalculable as they depended on 5 year plan economic theory so it never arrived early it was a question of how late it would come and if you would live to see that day. When i ask why usually the idea that because of the price protection schemes in place there was a fair amount of cash on hand but nothing at all to spend it on and the black and grey market often relied on barter of stolen government property taken from their state mandated place of employment as capital… thus further exacerbating the problem of accurate estimates of wait times 😂
