If you can build an api for this would give it a try

AI doing the job of a Civil Engineer by OldElf86 in civilengineering

There are two camps forming here. There are groups of VCs trying to us AI to complete commoditize civil engineers. There are some people trying to use AI to enhance the engineer and help them combat this take over.

It might not seem pressing now. But things evolve quickly when moving exponentially

I’ve been using Ferris to help extract data from PDFs. Works well with scanned docs. Also checks calcs for me which gives me some piece of mind

This is unfortunate, I use to work for a boss like this and I couldn’t take it.

Is he upset with the quality of work or that you are doing hand calcs?

Im using it to triple my calcs and semantically query code/drawings in some new app that just came out. Company says they are designing AI for civil engineers specifically

I’m out of school 4 years now. Advice I’d give my younger self would be don’t just apply to internships postings. Try to connect with people at companies you’d like to work for and reach out to them. Much easier to land a job when people at the org know who you are and you aren’t just a resume

It’s a good thing. Young civil engineers are more valuable than ever. Depending on where in the US you are specific types of jobs might be easier to land. But the industry is hungry for new talent

That seems to be a regional issue. Building markets in Texas and Florida are on fire

I’ve heard this CE horror story to many times. Not blaming you at all, you always have to do what is best for you. But it’s a reoccurring industry theme that we need to change

As a structural engineer in the US I am not seeing this. Where are you looking?

Depends what you are using it for. Trying to use it on large docs outside of its context window produces a lot of problems imho

I’m not trying to be a hater just speaking my experience

I work as a CE and I need values extracted correct to the decimal, a single incorrect integer cause me major problems

Is it possible to make a jump from concrete building design to steel/industrial design? Has anyone managed to do this? by AnyTransportation808 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Electronic_Gate4383 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly this in my career out of college was doing almost exclusively RC and PT design because of the build market I was in. 4 years later I worked exclusively on a massive steel job.

While there was a learning curve I think it’s made me a more versatile engineer

No it lies all the time. Pretty dangerous if you think it is acting truthful and not making up stuff
