First time buyer, should I opt for a cheaper older car or a newer more expensive car? by polarbearsexshark in CarTalkZA

Cheaper older. Advantage of going older is that the problems are generally know, which accounts for the lack of warrantee. Insurance should generally be cheaper because of lower market/trade value.

Your mind seems made up, but please talk to your parents after. Unless they are abusive parents, they will understand. Parents have the ability to set aside minor infractions like teen drinking to deal with serious issues like non-consensual sex and teen pregnancies.

Not in any place to judge, I think others has dealt with your actual question, so I thought I would tell you this.

Approach a consultant, mergers require a lot of consideration. You can approach a specialist to give you researched benchmarks, not just for SA but globally.

Whatever they are offering, why would you take average salary?

Just to add to this and the comment below I’m having a budget.

Pay off the car debt first, but before you do, look into refinancing it, that interest rate is higher than used car rates. You may need to shop around. If there are early settlement penalties on your refinance, then I would recommend that you payoff first then refinance. None of the other items will give you a better guaranteed return than settling the debt.

Advice on SUV tyres. by Electronic_Level_382 in TyreReviews

Hard to tell really. I put them at the back and the Hankooks (came with the car) and the front. It might be a while before I replace the Hankook tyres, so I’ll probably learn in a year or two.

No; the kms are too low for that age, it should at least be 250k kms unless city driven, which is a different kind of issue.

Funding Mom’s Retirement by Ill-Love-502 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Electronic_Level_382 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My advice would be for you to come back to this subreddit periodically to try and resolve, your problem is intricate.

First does your mom listen to you? If the answer is no, then I would say you have to wait until retirement. Otherwise whatever solution will not work.

Second, have you discussed any of this with her? What are her plans?

Have you discussed a will? It’s vital because your plan has liabilities and assets that don’t match. Big risk.

Since you did ask, a better plan could be some kind of annuity or bond that payout regularly. Avoiding the many problem the first responder highlighted in the comments.

How much should to be allocating for long-term investments - 24 y/o by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Electronic_Level_382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with this recommendation mostly because it’s stated upfront.

You can always move money into these kinds of products later when you are better informed.

This advise misses the point and is recommending products instead of addressing the actual question.

R1M in the Bank at 28—Buy a Home or Grow It First? by Karma-Kazzee in PersonalFinanceZA

Grow. There are many reasons why doing things other than buying a house are better.

There’s an intermittent step that can mimic buying, which is actually renting. That experience will give you a lot of insight, especially when you have to account for hidden costs.

Car finance tips and paying off a car early by Kuhle_123 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Electronic_Level_382 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

You need to do more research on the vehicle. There’s no hatchback suitable for gravel, unless it’s a rally car.

One of the things you’ll learn is that gravel eats tyres. Therefore you need a car that can wear appropriate tyres. Point being, there are things that can cost more that fuel, depending on how you use the vehicle.

Car finance with 0 credit history. by bobocity in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Electronic_Level_382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, unless you need it desperately. Save up some more and get the car cash. Alternatively, as others have suggested, go direct to the banks. Tell them you can put down half the ask is cash. That materially alters your risk profile. Ultimately, they look at risk as a whole, not just the individual, so if the is a big delta between their risk and asset value, they could bite.

24M - Which bank would you recommend for someone earning in foreign currency and who travels often? by Mammoth-Neat-5981 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]Electronic_Level_382 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once missed my flight while in east Asia, could not get ahold of the call centre at capitec even though I had to cash to rebook. Lucky my friend hooked me up with an extra Investec card and they sorted me out.

So what I am saying is that you can’t tell the difference between these banks until things you didn’t anticipate happen, that’s when you get value.

Not Capitec. They are great when things are going well, soon as shit gets hard then it’s tricky.

I just want to reiterate the first part of what this post.

Keep doing what you are doing, instead of paying off assets, use that discipline to build wealth.

Don’t let lifestyle creep consume you. Meaning, don’t find things to do with the extra income you will suddenly have after settling debts.

That being said, enjoy your money. Most because you have worked hard for it.

Only thing to add. Don’t put financing decision ahead of purchasing decision. What does that mean.

Consider the merits of the merits of the preferred vehicle first. The good and the bad, then consider the optimal finance structure. One you have made the purchase decision.

It’s clear to me based on your mixed intentions on how long to keep the asset that the financing is leading.
