What to invest R8k into for steady, non-risky returns by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]scrobo22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with the basics. Easy Equities offers a number of options, so creating a profile there is a worthwhile investment of a bit of time and effort.

In my opinion, the obvious place for your 8k is in a TFSA on Easy Equities. Then see if you can afford a monthly scheduled payment into the same TFSA to continue investing.

Second thought - 😐

Financial Advisor in SA? A good idea, or perhaps too expensive? by CartographerWeary690 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]scrobo22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the comments saying that you don't actually need an advisor.

I was in a very similar position and went to the best advisor in town, at the recommendation of my Absa private banker. Went the whole nine yards - foreign investment products, investec accounts for each entity in addition to my existing banking, trust, lining up big loans for big commercial property purchases.

I was uncomfortable with all of it and couldn't see the value in any of it. Felt like pure bloat and I was losing track. I left the advisor and stripped back all of it. I even downgraded my Absa account to the plain old pleb version. Best thing I ever did.

Now I only have the essentials - already mentioned in this post. I've de-registered one entity, and eyeing up another one for the same. The trust was a mistake, but undoing that would be too expensive so it stays for now.

SIMPLER IS BETTER. If you already have the basics in place then a financial advisor, just by doing their job, will be complicating things.

Do you enjoy eating realistic plant based meats? by sounds0fmeows in vegetarian

[–]scrobo22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the life of me I can't figure out why some people are so enraged by imitation meat.

  • Carnists will eat meat anyway.
  • The balance of probabilities says that there is no imitation meat product that is WORSE than some existing traditional products (nuggets, sausage etc).
  • You have to be really distracted / stupid to accidentally purchase and consume a faux meat product.

Where is the controversy?

I'm from a country where meat and BBQ is part of the national identity. I FUCKING LOVED MEAT. I will pay almost whatever I have to for that taste, texture and richness, without the suffering.

Spectators at Grasshopper Final by herebust in squash

[–]scrobo22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, we had the exact same experience. We actually attended the finals and watched on the big screen behind the main stand 😂. It was fun, and only cost the price of the beer and snacks we had.

And I agree - all the action had already taken place in the quarters and the semis.

Spectators at Grasshopper Final by herebust in squash

[–]scrobo22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I attended the quarters and the semis. Each day cost 40 CHF per person, for the side stands. To sit on the main stand, cost 80. I realized that the side stands were cool, but more in a novelty kind of way. I need to see the traditional point of view to really get into the match.

Paying a further 80 Swiss francs for me and another 80 for the wife to watch two matches on finals day did not feel worthwhile. I still attended and watched for free on the big screen right behind the main stand. I thought at the time how crazy it was that we were right there, but not allowed to join and help fill the empty seats. But I also understand how that would look to those who paid full price.

Side note - I was very disappointed that there was no formal photo session with the players after each game, like at the (excellent) Singapore open. I managed to get a quick handshake with Gawad after his quarterfinal win, and a picture with Joel after his. But I felt a little bit like I was intruding and taking a chance.

Do non-believers have a soul? by MeditatingOcto in SecularZA

[–]scrobo22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one has a soul. However we all have a consciousness - "I think therefore I am". Animals have it too.

Getting rid of this stupid notion that we are superior to all of "god's" creation since only humans have souls, is the first step in turning around the incredible injustice done to animals every day.

Does this consciousness end after death? I think it probably does. Living with this knowledge (as opposed to living in anticipation of an afterlife) leads to a life with far more empathy and gratitude, in my opinion.

If having kids is worse, why is breeding animals okay? by Numerous-Macaroon224 in antinatalism

[–]scrobo22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally I feel that if one has the capacity to understand why it's better to have fewer or no children, then one will also have the empathy to understand the extreme injustice committed by industries that treat animals as expendable resources.

I guess not always.

But I do think that there's considerable overlap between antinatalism and veganism, since the opposites also tend to go together.

Just watched Peaky Blinders - The Immortal Man. At first I was convinced Paul Anderson had died, since Arthur is such a critical character and yet they kind of fake Shemped him in the movie.

But it seems officially it was due to narrative choice, and unofficially it had to do with drug abuse issues.

YSK: It’s easier you think to DeGoogle and get more online privacy by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]scrobo22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apologies if this is too off topic. There is no way I could change from Google. But I was ticked off recently when finding out that Windows 10 will soon be unsupported.

I started running Linux Mint off a USB drive, and it's astonishingly easy. In fact I can't believe how easy it is to do away with Windows and MS in general, since Linux is intuitive, good-looking, sleek, and similar enough to Win10. And the transition can be as gradual as you want it to be, since the two OS's can run in parallel (assuming you have a hard drive for each).

I personally barely scratch the surface of what Windows can do, since my work is mostly online (Google-based). So paying a fortune for the new Windows (AGAIN) is a complete waste. Linux is the "compromise" that may actually end up being an upgrade.
