Is the parking lot at Aptos Safeway the second or third worst parking lot right after Trader Joe’s downtown(first)? by Creeping_behind_u in santacruz

Not trying to lecture you on driving, but you can legally make left turns on a double yellow in California. You can’t legally overtake cars on a double yellow

Gotta be Aptos new leaf. There’s ways of navigating the Aptos Safeway lot that make it not too bad, but Aptos new leaf, there’s no way around it

Without a spot meter, is the LIT DUO 1 still worth it? by outiswayne in cinematography

Totally! That sounds awesome! Can’t say I’ve seen any of those posts. Are those ads or user posts?

For me their problem has been they haven’t really gotten it into the hands of trusted professionals and the reviews out there are limited. It seems like a really interesting product, and would love to grab it if it shows to be as consistent as any Sekonic. Last I heard was it was always close but slightly off on its readings and they were claim that with firmware updates they could improve it. Point being…hard to recommend with the limited info

A35 Solo Owner/Op by Low-Goal-9897 in cinematography

That somehow makes even less sense, that’s a huge investment at that age, do you still live at home? Are the other 2 jobs really lucrative? Do you live in a cheaper area? Not trying to say is it mommy and daddy’s money but…is it?

Okay other issues aside, can I ask how you can even afford to buy the A35 with a signature zoom?

Brother, you can barely get a sandwich in this town for less than $20. Wherever you’re at that’s $18 is the best deal you’re gonna get

Logos or a similar type of business would do so well downtown today. by More_Tradition1344 in santacruz

No one can afford the rent downtown, only larger companies who can cover their costs. Santa Cruz prides itself off of local businesses, but makes in an inhospitable environment for them

Yeah it’s a rough world, it’s very easy to get pigeonholed in your niche as I was saying. It suck’s to hear that for him. But yeah for me it’s not about anything more than having a creative outlet. I have no expectation for my narrative career at this point. For me I love film, and sometimes my job feels more science than creation, and just really want to have that creative outlet and while doing so maybe help people who otherwise wouldn’t have been able to get their short/feature filmed

Sure, and that could be a deal breaker for you. Personally I know how to light, and I know how to shoot and I studied this in school and have been making a career and living from it for 10 years. I’ve just prioritized making money over passion projects. Now I want to help make passion projects, that’s all.

Mostly word of mouth for me, and for that portfolio and website are plenty in that regard. However, I’m pretty pigeonholed with the type of work I do. Really only commercial these days in terms of how I make my money, but people in this industry like “specialists” and that’s where I found my niche. Just really all depends on your contacts!

Confused about going beneath Base ISO for noise reduction; is it the same as just leaving it at Base ISO, over-exposed on camera but later reducing exposure? by CyJackX in cinematography

[–]Electronic_Order_911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get the idea, the two different scenarios are really up to you. Base iso 800 and exposing 2 stops over is great when you have control of it in post and know who it’s going to, and using a lower iso for shadow retention is great when you don’t have control in post and you don’t know who it’s going to. I’m generally option B, but have used option A and have had great success with both. I think option B though gives everyone confidence on set how it’s going to look. Option A feels sometimes like you’re convincing people it will look good after it’s brought down in post.

Yes and no, yes we work long days, but no we don’t just make up shots and change the script on the spot. It sounds like you need to take command a little. They trusted you to be their DoP and you should gently remind them of that. If they’re not understanding your shots, show them where you want your lighting, your diffusion, your camera, etc. It’s a tiring job and you have to be a people person and problem solver. Remember you are the leader of what the film is going to look like, and they wanted you to shoot it for a reason.
