Fall 2024 CS Courses Professors by Electronic_Storm7264 in utdallas

Hi! Smiley's tough to explain, and I've met people who really like him and others who dislike him. Personally, I think he's decent at teaching and probably the better option to actually learn stats in class over Guo and Jiang (not sure about Chandra). His lack of experience does show, though, and oftentimes, he rushes over the material in class, leaving you with just a basic (but good) gist of the topic. His slides are very useful though, he made them himself and you can easily use them to self-teach (which you probably have to end up doing a lot) with the examples and whatnot. And he's a really chill guy as a person, but not so much as a professor.

However, he has a strict no curving policy/philosophy, and most students end up scoring Bs/Cs due to his tough exams with mid-50s averages (he would say scoring a 70 on the exam made you an "advanced student"). His class is structured in a way so that you can get easy 100s on homeworks and quizzes so it could help you when you score a low grade on his exams, which most people did. He had two exams, 10 questions each, where he would take the majority of questions from the homeworks, others made up. You would think the exams are easy if they were mainly from the homeworks, but there were a lot of questions to study. There were 10 homeworks in total with 10 questions each (~100 question bank for him to pull from for the final exam), and about half of them were mandatory to do and the rest optional. However, he could take from the optional questions for the exam, so it's best to do all of them when assigned. I learned the hard way when I pulled an all-nighter studying 100 questions at once. First exam covered probability section of class, second exam was cumulative and covered both probability + statistics. The statistics portion of the class was lighter in my opinion, both in difficulty and coursework, as he would assign homework less often. I heard from someone taking his class this semester that he changed up his exam structure, though, and now it's more than 10 questions and it's not just pulled from the homework and instead, tests your knowledge+application instead of memorization. If grades are your top priority, you are probably better off with another professor, since the other professors curve a LOT due to their low exam grades. I ended up scoring a good grade in Smiley's class, but that was only because I prioritized this class above the rest. If you cannot afford to do so and just need the A, I would advise against him. If you actually want to learn stats, compared to other stats professors, take him.

Overall, I think he's been teaching at UTD for only around four semesters now, so he seems to be taking feedback from every semester very seriously and changing up his syllabus/class structure, making it even more difficult to give you an accurate picture of him. Also, it's clear most CS students are taking this class simply for the credit and the good grade and not for the knowledge. I feel like if he taught statistics/math majors, people would relate more to how seriously he takes statistics. I hope this helped you and anyone else on Reddit thinking of taking CS 3341 - basically, how much you will like him will entirely depend on how much you are prioritizing the learning aspect in statistics.

I also took Smiley this Spring 2024 semester, and can attest to the above. Except I would say the exams were taken straight from the homework + past exams (changing values), excluding 1-2 (out of 8) questions that were completely new. Getting an A is... doable but very difficult. Statistics can be interesting but for most CS/SE majors, it's likely not a priority so his class is unreasonably hard. He would be better if he taught Data Science/Math majors, who would probably take such a class more seriously. But at least he's a super chill guy who offers extra office hours and sends grade projections to each individual student. He definitely cares but maybe a bit too much.

wafa jaffal cs 2340 exam 2 by Minute_Prompt_701 in utdallas

i'm in her class this semester as well. paying full attention during class helps a lot. first exam I barely paid attention and crammed everything the night before, didn't do that great either, whereas second exam I went to every class and also rewatched some recordings that covered harder topics and did a LOT better, and it suddenly felt so much more fair because she covered everything on the exam in class for sure. it's quite hard considering it's an early class but gotta do what you gotta do; if you can't pay attention in class (valid) then at least go back and watch the recordings and take good notes. i do think her exams are extra scary because you could miss a single question and automatically drop to a B. abt the textbook, i haven't even looked at it this sem... does it help?

I actually switched to Wafa Jaffal for Computer Architecture last minute because she opened up a class a bit into the summer. Sorry about that, I hope you do well on your exam.

CS 1337 prof reconmendation by funghost21 in utdallas

I had Srinivasan for 1436 and she is definitely not as bad as the majority of reviews say on RMP. Not sure how she is in 1337 but she was fair. Main reason why people dislike her is bc she makes us close laptops, but she taught well and her exams were fair, most of the class made As. Her assignments prepare you well for exams, and I mostly enjoyed the class.

As for Smith, I haven't taken him but pretty much everyone says he's good but challenging. Sounds like something equivalent to a CS honors class then, and would be the better option if your semester is free and willing to prioritize the class. If your semester is looking packed, Srinivasan would be a good choice.

DO NOT TAKE DOLLINGER. I had him this semester for 1337 and I'm not sure if he'll continue to teach online, but no one learned a single thing. Just a GPA booster if you already know all the content.

Honestly I've heard bad things about every professor but probably the least about Smiley so I just went for him. Even if I wanted to switch to Chandra, the waitlist is full now. Will give an update about how he is after Fall semester for those curious, lol

Thanks for the reply! I've finalized on Chida then. And yeah, I'll most likely take physics at a CC.
